Overview

Adventurers love sleeping under the towering trees and night sky of the secluded Brooklyn Lake Campground in the mountains of southeastern Wyoming. Located eight miles northwest of Centennial, Wyoming, the facility is situated along a small, picturesque lake at an elevation of 10,500 feet. This campground will have a mix of reservation sites and first-come, first-served sites for the 2024 season. If you are not reserving your site, you may be able to pay for your campsite(s) by cash or check once you are at the campground.

Recreation

Popular activities include hiking, fishing and non-motorized boating. The 36-acre lake is a nice canoeing spot with calm water. Non-motorized boats are allowed on Brooklyn Lake with carry-down access for small recreational watercrafts. There is no boat ramp and trailered vessels cannot be used at this location.Fishing is good for brook trout. From the campground, hikers can access the Sheep Lake and Lost Lake Trails. Sheep Lake Trail also allows horseback riding.

Natural Features

The scenery at Brooklyn Lake can't be beat. Pine forests and grasslands surround the lake, and the snow-capped Browns Peak protrudes into the crisp, blue summer sky. The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland encompass nearly 3 million acres from central and northeastern Wyoming to north-central Colorado. Black bear, bobcat, coyote, elk, mule deer and moose are just some of the many animals that inhabit these rich and diverse lands.

Directions

The campground is about 40 miles west of Laramie, Wyoming and 8 miles northwest of Centennial on State Highway 130. From Laramie, travel 37 miles west on 130 and turn onto Forest Road 317/Brooklyn Lake Road. Proceed northwest for 2 miles to the campground.

Brooklyn Lake

This campground was great! It was our backup plan… Sugarloaf was full.

We camped site #5. Which has a partial view of the lake through some trees, but a great view of the mountains.

Campsites have picnic tables and fire rings.

Road in was slightly rough, but easy to find/navigate, and any decent car can make it.

No water while we were there, but vault toilets were decent and open, there are 2 total. Trash is also available, so dont worry about packing it out.

ATT had spotty service, but you can hike up and maybe get a bar or two.

Speaking of hiking… There are some great trails which lead up to a glacial lake with some incredible views.

The other reviews about mosquitos are correct… They are relentless in the evening and mornings, but we were one of the closest campsites to the water, so the sites further back might have been a little better.

Arrive early(ish). We got here about 11am and site #5 was the only one available. Watched about a dozen more vehicles drive around camp throughout the day, without the same luck. This was on a Wednesday.

Overall, we had a great time here. Scenery was great, sites were clean, people were friendly.

Beautiful Views

Beautiful campground, fills up fast! Rock road up to the campground! Narrow turns, big rigs not recommended. We pulled an 18-foot trailer and saw only a few spots that would work for us! Highly recommended for a mountain high experience!

Tucked away campground with almost everything you need.

I found this place a few nights ago while in the Medicine Bow National Forest and what a find it was. So beautiful! The location is pretty amazing - right next to a lake, tucked up against the mountains, very quiet and pristine. The campground has all the amenities you'd expect: fire pits, tables, toilets, trash bins, and a water pump (although I couldn't figure out how to get it working). The sites vary in terms of privacy and style - some are closer to one another, others back a bit. Some are out in the open with no trees, others have trees (and I managed to get my hammock hung no problem.) Lots of variety. I say it has almost everything you need because I didn't get any cell service (on Verizon), which for those of us that are mobile workers that like to be able to work while camping can be a deal-breaker.

Nearby are some cool things as well: a trailhead to do some hiking, and a small chapel that is just sitting out in the middle of the wilderness. Very cool little spot to just sit and relax, even if you're not of the faith (god knows I'm not).

It was pretty much empty when I was there, just one other camper in their RV who was the host if I'm not mistaken. This could be because it's toward the end of the season, or perhaps because of the active wildfire that was burning not too far away. Either way, it was perfectly quiet at night, which I love.

Signs mentioned it being an active bear area, so practice all the regular food safety bear stuff - pack it away in your car or up a tree.

Only downside was a burn ban in effect, which given the elevation of the campsite can make for cold nights. You'll need to really bundle up if you can't have a fire to keep you warm. Also, it is now closed for the season, so if you're thinking about coming here in 2020 or early 2021, it won't be open. The rangers came by the next morning to let me know they were locking it down, partly due to the fire, and partly because it was getting close to seasonal closing time anyway.

Really glad I managed to catch this place literally the night before it was shut for the year. I would definitely come back.

Beautiful and peaceful

Great place to camp! It’s a little tricky to get a campsite because people come and go throughout the day. We didn’t get a site about 1pm on a Thursday but came back first thing Friday morning and got a spot for the weekend. Beautiful views and stargazing. Tons of trails and places to see nearby. Vault toilets and hand pump water but still worth it. We saw three big moose pass through the campground. Fun kayaking and fishing at the lake. Nice that it isn’t a super crowded and busy area. Even when the parking lot and campground are full it doesn’t seem crowded.

Lots of Nearby Trails

We were up at Brooklyn Lake over the holiday weekend. The campground was closed but apparently in Wyoming a campground becomes dispersed if it’s not officially open. We had to walk our things in to our site as the gate was down but it was worth it. We got a site just above the lake and it was quiet and very beautiful. Bring bug spray as the mosquitos are very bad. There were three trail heads at the campground all with multiple hike options which was really nice to have access to some beautiful hikes without getting into the car. The toilets were even open despite the campground being closed.

Amazing part of Medicine Bow

Small site with incredible scenery and stargazing. As if the views weren’t enough, all of the campsites (to my knowledge) are very close to the water. We enjoyed kayaking around the lake and hiking nearby on the CDT. There are vault toilets but not much else...perfect!

Awesome campground, great lake!

This campsite was pretty awesome, and the views and scenery were beautiful. One of my favorite parts about this campground is that every site does have a view of the lake. My buddies and I came here pretty late in the day, and still got a pretty great spot...with a view of the lake! The cost to stay was only $10 a night, which is well worth it! We stayed here 2 nights, so we just split the $30 cost. We brought our kayaks and stand up paddle boards, and really enjoyed doing this in the lake. We literally just walked a few steps and put our boards and kayaks in the water! The campground was very well kept and clean which we appreciated too. The last couple of miles before getting to the campground are gravel road, and the road is pretty narrow. I would say all vehicles could probably fit down this road, but we did have to get over a few times to let cars coming down get by. They do provide restrooms, and we thought they were pretty well kept and clean. They don't have any electrical hook-ups, which would be a downer for those bringing an RV and wanting the electrical hook-up. Definitely keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. We saw a few moose and some deer, but we were told/warned that there are black bears and bobcats that have been seen numerous times. We did put all our food in containers and up from the ground for this reason. The campground is in a great location, and it is surrounded by beautiful mountains and trees. We really enjoyed hanging our hammocks and sitting by the fire at night. We also really enjoyed some great hikes that were nearby. The hikes we did were Sheep Lake Trail and Lost Lake Trail. Both were great hikes that had some pretty awesome views which made the hard hike worth it. We also saw people fishing in the lake, although we didn't do this. Cant wait to come back and hang here again!
