About

The American Alpine Club (AAC) campground at the New River Gorge resides in Fayetteville, WV, on a 40-acre parcel adjacent to the National Park and within walking distance of popular crags at the New River Gorge. There are 40 private sites and ten communal sites. No RVs, no trailers, and no vehicles over 20' are permitted. There are two large communal fire pits, a bathhouse with coin-operated showers ($1 for minutes), and a pavilion. We're working on a wifi solution, but it comes and goes.

Detailed directions: -From Fayetteville, go north on Highway 19, -Turn left on Ames Heights Road, the second left after the bridge. -Drive on Ames Heights road for .6 miles, -At a crossroads with an "Adventures on the Gorge" sign, take a hard left, downhill, on a narrow blacktop road. -Drive down this road for .2 miles, the gravel pullout for the camp is on the left.

Young Adult Climber Meeting Place

The campground was decent and the bathrooms were big and clean. Loved the big sinks for dishes. Bathrooms were clearly once men/women but had been made so anyone could use either one. The covered pavilion was used for large gatherings and yoga type classes both nights we were there.

I chose poorly…

Low review based only on my poor site selection. I was right by the communal shelter. Quiet hours were courteously observed by fellow campers and the lights turned off automatically shortly after 10, but outside of those times there was no quiet or privacy. The sites on the lower loop, say low 20’s and up, looked lovely, tucked among boulders and rhodies. Each site had a picnic table and tent pad(s). Fires are limited to a large communal fire pit that was well stocked with wood. Clean restrooms. Coin-operated showers. Definitely can tell it’s a climber’s campground. Had a very Miguel’s-like vibe to it.

Definitely check out the Burrito Bar tucked into the woods on the other side of 19. Great beer, good food, and chill atmosphere.

Great for a few nights

This place is really nice. Super clean bathrooms and flat platforms for tent camping. It’s a little pricey in my opinion but it’s easy to get to and close to lots of climbing.

Unique Camping experience

We were lucky to get campsite 23, which had a tent platform high up on a boulder. The campsite was fairly quiet and cozy!

Only downsides were communal cammpfire (but we made friends anyways!) and coin operated showers for hot water.

Nice for climbers

This site was well kept and clean. The communal area was quiet and spacious. The bathrooms had bugs but very clean! Cute little place to stay. Need to sign up online early due to Covid.

Nice campground - great for climbers especially!

This is a very well thought out campground and is a great option for climbers visiting the area. each site has a wooden tent platform (10'x10') to set up on, which is a huge plus since the ground is so uneven throughout. Each site has a picnic table and a parking space as well.

There aren't group sites available, but whoever in our group was organizing managed to get multiple sites next to each other, which was nice.

We ended up doing all of our cooking and eating in the big covered communal porch on the shower house with lights and big kitchen sinks for cleaning up as it was a very rainy weekend. It's handy to be able to cut through from the lower to the upper sites on little foot trails to get to the common areas.

Showers are quarter operated but I was too much of a cheapskate to partake. But the facilities were clean!

great for climbers and others alike

Big climber campground with showers and campus board in season. still allow access out of season but showers are locked. one general use firepit, not individuals.

It's ok

The place is nice overall, and well conserved. Customer service was great. Lots of sites are waterfront, that's a plus. But there's is no privacy, it is an open space with a bunch of sites distributed in two rows. My site was waterfront, it had water, electricity, grill/firepit, and a table. Showers and toilets on premises were clean. Train tracks across the river, quite an experience. I was in a tent by myself and felt secure all the time regardless the fact that it is just by the road and has no access control. Nice views. Lots of places to visit which are very close if driving.

perfect for climbing in the NRG

this campground is well maintained and located in the heart of the New. It's a quick walk to the Junkyard Wall or a short drive to many other classic crags. non-AAC members are also welcome to stay for a more expensive rate. even though the showers are closed and the host isn't on sight in the winter, you can still stay here on the honor system. be sure to book in advance!
