Nice Campground

Nice campground on the small side. Some of A loop backs up to the 540 highway, but it isn't super busy or noisy. Facilities are old and clean. Access to the beach would normally be really easy and we went earlier enough in the season, the trail under the highway was flooded so we had to walk along the highway instead.

Nice

Easy to get a spot just driving in in mid-late September. Rangers were super helpful. We thought we had to book through the reservation system (as we had been told in another Oregon State Campsite) but they were able to assign us a campsite just driving in. Clean bathrooms/showers. Laundromat is just down the hill on the right next to a gift shop in Charleston before the left turnoff to the Boat Basin.

Sunset Bay

The showers were great!!! Sites were a good size and comfortable. This was a very large and very full campground. Found some fantastic views from here.

Nice walk to a beach

Overall a nice enough campground. Check-in was easy, only A campsites and a few B were open. Showers in A were out of order. 4 Showers near the Yurts were open, very cold and dark bathroom and shower was luke warm at best. Zero cell service. Our site was nice, a small grassy area at the back with a picnic table and fire ring. Our neighbors across the way were playing music until at least 3am, at least it was mellow country music so not terrible. Walkable beach access for a nice sunset, weather permitting. Overall an ok stay.

Nice Base Camp

Nice little state park. Sites are really close to each other. We are tent campers and usually don’t do state parks. It was a nice early season camping spot. We used this as our base camping for hiking. We covered many miles on the OTC trail and surrounding beaches. The sunset was beautiful the nights we started. Definitely would come back to this campground.

Beautiful Sunset

We camped in two adjacent campsites in loop A. The park is an easy, delightful little walk to Sunset Beach. This is a must-see at sunset, hence the name.

Beautiful spot on the coast

This spot wasn’t on my “must visit” list when planning but it was a gorgeous stop! Lots of places around for little views of the ocean, saw some sea lions, stunning sunset in the bay with only about 8 other people on the beach.

The campground does not have a view of the bay but it was a short walk to the bay for a gorgeous sunset. Some of the spots in the back had good space & greenery surrounds. Lots of friendly people, firewood for sale from hosts, & helpful rangers!

Didn’t get cell service in the site but got service just a short walk from the campground. Also had a little park nearby.

Had clean bathrooms, flush toilets, with hot showers.

Quiet Fun Campground

We stayed in one of the full hookup RV sites. Arrived on Thursday and the campground was pretty empty. Filled up Friday night. Our spot was clean and drained fairly well (it rained on our first day. Theres a bit of noise from the golf course road that runs along the edge of some of the site. Hosts were nice but they did have their dog off leash which was a little annoying for everyone else following the rules. It's a very short walk over to the beach/bay. The beach area has some large grass fields and a couple of volleyball courts. Bathrooms were nice and clean and the single use shower stalls were nice (no charge for showers). We would definitely come back.

Close to Beach

This campground (CG) has easy access to the small Sunset Bay beach via a walking path that goes under the road. We checked this CG out for a possible future stay. There were a few sites that would fit our 39’ fifth wheel. There was a nice walking trail through the CG. They even had a fish cleaning station. Restroom/shower houses were spaced conveniently throughout for the tent and yurt campers. Restrooms were clean as was the CG. We were there during a weekend and although it was full, the CG was relatively quiet.

Great location, mediocre Campground

The location is pretty unbeatable. You can walk right from your camp out to a beautiful beach in a secluded bay. There are also hiking trails right from the campground. However the sides are right on top of each other. It’s pretty noisy with the youth as well as the foghorns at night which may keep you from sleeping. All in all a good place to stay but very busy. Reservations definitely required..

Classy State Park

There is a golf course right next door. Well-curated campground. Tent camping available here, but we stayed in a yurt. Yurts do not have much greenery for privacy, but you have walls, so I suppose that makes up for it.

Inside the yurt is a heater, a small table, a bunk bed, and a futon. Fire pit around the side. Hot showers and potable water everywhere. Camp hosts and staff were pleasant.

Short walk to a gorgeous beach and miles of hiking trails! Caution: dogs not allowed in some nearby parks.

Busy but Quiet

We showed up on a Friday late morning and were able to snag the last available spot. This place gets busy on weekends, while maintaining a mellow and quiet vibe. We enjoyed our stay here, even though we had to move on the next day because there were no available sites for Saturday. If you don't have a reservation you can only take walk up sites one night at a time due to online reservations.

The showers were hot and free.

There is garbage as well as mixed recycling, but they don't take glass. They do have a separate bin for propane canisters though.

Cell service was ok for Verizon, somewhat usable for T-Mobile, and very weak / unusable for ATT.

The sites are all unique, with some having more privacy than others. We lucked out and got a site that was practically fully enclosed on three sides.

Easy walking trail from the campground to the water.

Beautiful tree filled park

Made reservations two weeks out, mid week. Electrical and water at our site. Pad is level. While park is tree lined very easy to navigate with chase rig. Easy walk to the beach from the campground.

Condensed, but Beautiful

The foliage surrounding your camp is only waist high, and the sites are small, so you are in close proximity to your neighbors. That said, the facilities are immaculate, the trails are AMAZING, and the campgrounds are under a pleasant canopy. Bring warmth, if you are touring campsites in the area this will be cooler than any of them. Showers are free and hot. Noise carries, so be mindful of your neighbors at night but also expect a little noise. Worth it I think. Beach is a short walk away.

Surrounded by nature. No cell service.

This is a really great state park. The sites are nice and big and all the trees and foliage makes you feel very secluded. The bathrooms and showers are a nice feature too. There is a paved walking path to the beach. And hardly anyone here in early March. One thing of note, the cell service was pretty much non existent here. That’s probably good for some and not for others.

Sunset Bay Campground, OR

Located in Coos Bay, Oregon this state campground is one of our favorites. The sites are privacy and surrounded by trees. The beach is only a 5 minute walk from the campground. There are nearby hiking trails and you can hear the seals being noisy out in the ocean. The sites have water and electric, but no dump station. The WiFi service is poor. The bathrooms were dirty and cold. They were also closed for a few months until the second day of our stay. The campground hosts are helpful.

Beautiful campground!

This is one of the most beautiful campgrounds I've been to. Very green with lots of cheerful birds chirping in the morning. Its a short walk to the beach with even more fantastic views. The bathrooms are also very clean with warm water.

Nice campground

Our walk-in site backed up to the golf course (?) which we couldn’t see but could hear. Not terrible, overall a very quiet campground. Restrooms were clean, but did not seemed heated. Doors propped open due to COVID likely didn’t help. Walking distance to the main beach where we hiked up the hill to watch the sunset.

Sunset Bay not only has a lot of different things to do, but the space to do it in. There are well-designated spaces within the park to gut fish and look stuff up in an interpretive center, and beaches, picnic areas, sand volleyball courts and hikes just outside. We biked in and didn't miss a beat. Bring your drone. The only issue is that you feel a bit packed in at the sites. There are a few out-of-the-way spots, but in most, you might be negotiating with your neighbor as to where the borders lie. This place was built before giant SUVs came around. And everything's right by the campground roads. So - it's hard to gauge how respectful your neighbors are on a night-by-night basis and how much the in-park stuff gets overrun by crowds. That said, the large vistas and deep green ('make your trees look like happy trees') will ensure that you'll have a good time.

Developed Crowded Campground

The experience was more like camping in your backyard, with crowded, close sites fenced off from most of nature (creek).

Pros: Clean bathrooms and firewood available. Short drive/walk to Sunset Bay, were you can catch a beautiful sunset on the beach.

Cons: Crowded and noisy. Although our site was creek side, a chain linked fence separated us from exploring nature. Probably more suitable for a family with small children.

Tips: Go to Sunset Bay.

Well kept, clean and comfortable

The campground itself is within walking distance to the beach. I especially loved the safe walking trail that includes a tunnel that goes under the road and keeps beachgoers away from traffic completely. Bathrooms were clean (no showers avail due to Covid) and hosts were pleasant. We were able to buy firewood on-site. Sites are close together, but there is a lot of vegetation and trees throughout, so you still feel like you have some privacy. First time staying here and we can’t wait to return!

Great Place

A great place, very close to the ocean and very beautiful. Tent sites are $19 and pretty close together and small. We only stayed for one night and we got there when it was dark. Very busy for the end of November. Super rainy but that’s not the camps fault. Showers were hot and the bathrooms were nicely kept 😎

Park is spectacular, campground is good.

We didn’t stay at the campground, but we drove through to check it out. We visited offseason (October) so the interpretive center was closed, and there were lots of open spots available. It’s shady and off the road, but the spots are fairly close together. The yurts looked great, but had very little privacy. It might feel very crowded and busy in the summer months. Everything was clean and tidy. It would be a good landing place if you’re wanting to explore Sunset Bay and the surrounding State Parks.

Absolutely amazing!

This campground has everything and more! My only regret is making this the first campground in my family’s camping experience, the bar was set way high! There is a botanical garden, tide pools, swimming beaches, and very importantly, clean showers and bathrooms! It is so picturesque, it almost looks fake. There is a lighthouse that makes noise at night so I recommend earplugs to sleep. I wish I was closer to visit again.

A childhood favorite

I have been frequently this campground for 20 years and although a lot has changed in that time this campground seems to stay wonderful. Campsites are nicely maintained and practically on the beach with nearby hiking trails and pet friendly beaches. Campsites are pet friendly and nice sized with fire pits and picnic benches. Bathrooms and showers located nearby and the entire campground is very peaceful.
