Camping near Algonac State Park? Be prepared for some great outdoor fun and some crowds in this popular destination near the Canadian border.

With two modern campgrounds right off of the St. Clair River, Algonac campers can enjoy water access, hiking and biking trails, and even an archery range on site. These field-style sites can feel a little exposed, but with so much to get into in Algonac State Park, many campers find the experience more than worth it.

Visitors are welcome to Algonac year-round, which allows them to experience everything from sport fishing in Lake St. Clair to snowmobiling across Michigan’s thumb. Pick your favorite site from the nearly 300 options in Algonac State Park and take advantage of the northern wilderness.

Reservation Info

Campers may not camp for more than 15 consecutive nights. Campsites must be occupied each night. Two vehicles are allowed per campsite. Visitors must leave by 10 pm. Fireworks are not permitted.

The Great Lakes are powerful bodies of water. DO NOT swim near or jump off-break walls or navigational channel walls. Always pay attention to changing conditions and the beach flag warning system found in designated buoyed swim areas.

Algona state park

One of the best things about this campground is that you can choose to stay in the wagon wheel, or in the other area. I have stayed in both! I was very happy with this campground! I've stayed all over michigan, and this is one of the best. Your right close to the water, so you can watch the ships. I was very comfortable here, and I had my dog.

Gorgeous Views in Need of Care

Let’s start by being positive. This place has some amazing views along the St. Clair River. The freighter traffic did not disappoint. We saw at least 4 during our 2-night stay and the sunrise we witnessed from our site could have been a postcard.

The site was sizable with some care taken to abate some puddles, but unfortunately those who previously used our site tore it up significantly at the entrance. We drove around it, but had a hard time imagining the what kind of situation would have resulted in such a deep gaping hole that held about a foot of water!?!

Since this is well beyond normal camping season here in Michigan we understand staffing levels are going to be low but they still charge the same price regardless of that. The newer, cleaner, and nicer facilities were closed up for the season and they directed us to the old, out-dated, and less cared for facilities on the north end of the campground. Since staffing levels are low for off season I could understand that, but please take care to clean them. Cob webs, old dead insects, and dilapidated doors and decor showed severe signs of use and neglect.

Next, we were super excited to bring our brand new trailer to camp here but could not believe the disrepair of the campground roads. Sooo many ruts that I was deeply concerned for the undercarriage of both my truck and camper. Again, they are charging the same state fees as some of the nicer campgrounds we’ve stayed at, but the roads were inexcusable for a campground. People pay thousands for their camping equipment and gear and these roads put those investments at great risk.

We will go back but only for convenience (location to our home) and the gorgeous views…NOT for the accommodations.

Clean but very cramped

I generally camp in the northern parts of the state and thought I’d try a few places closer for shorter weekends. The campground was clean and the wagon wheel where we stayed was tree covered. The downside was the sites are to close together and no regulations on the amount of cars parked around the sites. I truly believe we where within 10-15 feet of the camper next to me. The Mosquitoes were extremely bad this year so I don’t fault the campground for that but we couldn’t even have a bonfire due to how bad they where. The freighters where neat to see so close but that isn’t going to draw me back there.

Wagonwheel

This campground has a couple distinctively different campground loops. The river sites in the front are pretty open with cool views of the freighters going by on the river.

We stayed in the back on the wagon wheel, which is in the woods. Some sites have more vegetation than others but it’s pretty woodsy.

Mosquitos were pretty bad. We’ve had a lot of rain and heat early this summer.

Camp hosts were helping direct traffic at the dump station Sunday morning which helped make that run smoothly.

There’s a decent amount of trails on the property and also a bike trail that leads into algonac I believe.

They also have a shooting & archery range on the property which was pretty cool.

Amazing view but no beach

Loved this campground! Bathrooms and showers were cleaner than any state park I’ve ever seen. Hosts and staff were friendly and helpful. My friends and I however got bitten up by mosquitoes even with bug spray. I recommend tent camping should be done away from the water to avoid them.

Awesome

Great state park. Has a hand gun shooting range with a range officer over looking and keeping control over it. Has some cool trails. It's right by the water. Highly recommend.

A Great Dtste Park on the St. Clair River

A fantastic state park to enjoy the view of the river, bonfires and meet people. They also have a range for archery, and firearms. The park was kept clean. A group of friends camped on Mother's Day weekend and we all had a great time even with the rain, breaking inall our new trailers.

Algonac state park rocks!

Minutes from Algonac....An hour from the big city, but seems a world away! The river is right across the street and you can wake up to freighters going by at dawn and go to sleep as their lights glide by.

Parking lot

This campground was nice and well kept but BUSY. Every time I have been here it has been packed. There isn't much space between the sites so it kind of feels like you are on top of each other. I wouldn't come back here if I didn't have to. If you like more rustic camping, this place is not for you.

Clean, comfortable and on the St. Clair River

The the campground is relatively flat, many spaces to choose from, very catering to RV and travel trailer. They do have a primitive area for tent campers. The bathrooms are absolutely beautiful. The staff very helpful, activities planned during many weekend throughout the year. Rates are wonderful and who wouldn't like to wake up staring at the st. Clair River

Beautifully kept if not totally 'removed'

Great campground with access to the beautiful St. Clair River as it runs between Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair.

When booking I suggest looking at the site map and choosing a site well off the road, its a busy throughway and the noise can be distracting, especially in summer months.

State Park on the St Clair River in Algonac, MI

Algonac State Park has 2 modern campgrounds. The River campground has a front row seat to passing freighters all day and night. There is an archery range, trap range, 1200-acre dedicated natural area, hiking, and fishing. They also have winter camping but no bathrooms or water is available.

Do you want to see the freighters??

If you can get a River View site its is awesome. Freighters come by at all times of the day. Most sites are sunny. Sites closer to the shower house are closer together and some trees. There is also the "Wagon Well". You'll feel like you are in the woods. Sites are close together.

Bike trail runs through the park. Gun range and archery range on site. A couple short hiking trails.

Showers and restrooms keep very clean

Halloween weekends are a blast. Expect a ton of kids.

Not much for trees or shade

This park is a little different than most State parks as it is right off a main road and it doesn’t give that outdoorsy feel. The campground has a nice entrance as when you pull in, you can see the volleyball courts and park/day use area. The campground has green grass and was very appealing to the eyes. The roads are paved, however in very bad shape. The bathhouse was modern and in the center of the campground with easy access from all sites. You can see the Saint Clair river across the road. I assume that is why they built this campground so close to the road in order to see the water. They do have trails for walking and an archery section. The workers were very nice. I am not so sure I would stay at this campground again as it didn’t really have a campground feel to me. I like to see trees and have some shade, but this didn’t really give us that option.

Coming Home

My husband and I stayed at this campground on our way home from Canada. Essentially this was our last resort campground because all the other ones that we had been close to our full. As we continue down our list of calling campgrounds this was the one that was still available. At first sight we were unimpressed but upon arrival of our campsite which was located in the Wagonwheel segment turned out not to be so bad.

Escape from Detroit

Lots of different landscapes to explore. Great wildlife and views of the river. We were only here in winter when it was empty, I imagine it’d be pretty busy in summer. No showers but vault toilets and some powered sites. There are two camp site areas here, and one section is just for tents (but that one’s not on the river, so you have some tradeoffs). We were disappointed by all the shooting noises from the range.

Algonac State Park

As I ride my bicycle north on SR 29, the shoulder is wide and there are plenty of signs that tell drivers this is a bikeway. I decided to go off route and stay along this road. It curves around the point, hugging Lake St. Clair.

The town of Algonac was not as I pictured it. A lady had told me that there were plenty of cafes to get some lunch at. The restaurants I saw were closed - they open later for dinner. I did find a Subway and the server was gracious enough to put on a bunch of spinach for me. The state park appeared quickly just after town.

I chose to get a camping spot nearer to the river so that I could sit out and watch the boats. After I set up my tent, showered and sat down to read, the rain started falling. This was a pleasant state park, especially with the beautiful ride in.
