Overview

Granite Flat Campground is located between the Truckee River and Highway 89, just one mile from Truckee and a short distance from Tahoe City. Visitors enjoy the area for its fishing and hiking opportunities, as well as its proximity to Lake Tahoe. This facility is operated and maintained by the Tahoe National Forest.

Recreation

Fly-fishing for rainbow trout on the Truckee River is a popular activity enjoyed by visitors to the area. Campers also enjoy swimming and tubing on the river. The surrounding area offers numerous hiking and biking trails, including the Western States Trail, Five Lakes Trail, and Pacific Crest Trail.__

The campground is situated on the banks of the Truckee River. A scenic forest of Jeffrey and lodgepole pine trees covers the area.

Granite Flat is centrally located between the town of Truckee and__Prosser, Boca and Stampede reservoirs to the north, as well as__Lake Tahoe and Olympic Valley to the south. A variety of outdoor recreational activities are available at each location.Truckee, 1 mile north, offers all the amenities of a year round recreational mountain town including interstate highway connectivity, top notch restaurants, resorts and hotels, grocery stores, gas stations, shopping, and historic sites. Lake Tahoe is located 15 minutes south and offers excellent boating, kayaking, fishing, hiking and scenic driving opportunities, as well as dining, shopping and lodging options. Other recreational opportunities include Donner Camp Interpretive Trail, Overland Emigrant Commemorative Trail, Stampede Reservoir Recreation Area, Prosser Pits OHV area, and numerous hiking, mountain biking, and OHV trails.

Really Loud and Smelly

I’ve stayed here a few times since 2017 and every time it’s the same. The highway is really loud at night, the majority of sites have very little shade, and the vault toilets here are absolutely disgusting and filled with flies.

Great location

Beautiful Location Close To Lake Tahoe

My daughter and I are camping in an Aliner travel trailer and are on a 3 week trip from NV to OR. This was one of our primary stops along the way.

The campground is in a beautiful setting, easy to get to, and right off the Highway. The other reviews that say it is noisy are correct, but we reserved a pull thru spot next to the river, the sound of the water helped to drown out the road noise. By dinner time the traffic was light and by bed time it was not an issue. You have direct access by pathways to the Truckee River and lots of places to set up and relax by the river for the day.

The bathrooms are clean and well maintained. The camp just was friendly and nonintrusive. There are near boxes and dumpsters. Fresh water is available at a couple of locations around the campground.

We drove to Tahoe City in 20 minutes, beautiful view of the Truckee River the whole way. We also went to Truckee, downtown was a 10 minute drive from the campground.

We will be coming back again many more times in the future.

Looked it over and canceled

Stayed at Prosser Campground for 4 nights and couldn’t get 4 more reserved. Granite Flats had availability so we reserved our site online. Drove over to check it out and canceled. No way our 30’ travel trailer would fit in the site and super close to another site. Charged $18 cancellation fee for a site we couldn’t fit into in spite web site information. Glad we were able to check it out ahead of time. Be prepared for a lot of road noise and close sites. Access road not very good and other entrance gate locked. If you can get a site near the river you might be happy.

Great location on the river

It was packed over Labor Day weekend, but the spots are spread out enough. Get a spot closer to the water since there is more shade and the river can drown out some of the noise of the highway. I don't recall any showers, and the bathrooms are pretty basic pit toilets. You're just down the street from groceries and Truckee though.

Be sure to bring tubes or something to float down the river! The water was cool and the best way to beat the heat.

Truckee River Campsites

Really neat sites run next to the Truckee River. The sites are clean and well kept. Bathrooms do not have sinks, showers or any running water, only port-a-potties. We went in October 2020 and the early mornings can be quite cold. The temp dropped down into the 30’s between 4-9am, so be prepared, however it warms up quite quick, by 11am it was around 70 degrees. The traffic off the freeway is pretty loud, but the river drowns it out.

The site volunteer manager “Steve” was not very friendly, so be sure to check for updated information on the message board when you arrive, because he will call the rangers on you.

Fine for a quick stay

This campground will give you a place to sleep when passing through, but I wouldn't recommend it for a longer stay. As many other reviews have said, it is close to the road and loud. In addition, the sites are close together.

The city in the woods

Its a nice camp ground, easy to get to and everything is kept up nicely. There are bear boxes, picnic tables and fire rings at each site so everything you need for an easy weekend on the river. The only downside to this campground is that its right along the highway so you hear road noise all the time. Its also right on the Truckee River and there are good access spots so you don't have to go through peoples spots.

Good location

An oasis!!

Coming from a state that has water around it, then moving to nevada really made me sad but not even 2 hrs away you will find this refreshing water of truckee river! I had my birthday here couple years ago. Float on the flowing water is amazing and yet memorable with my friends. On campsite area is a bit rocky. Sleeping pad, sleeping mats or if youre glamping, air bed is a must!! It becomes super chilly at night. Temp changes drastically and that was august. Id bring a pair of wool socks, thermals and sleeping bag will get you comfortable at nightfall, stars are super visible but trees are on its way. Vegetation is lush in here and you will get some unwinding feeling after seeing the desert part of nevada. Lots of shops close to the lake. Restaurants are amazing, parkings are hard but you dont have to fight for a spot. If suggest to reserve a spot even though its not really a popular area due to lake tahoe and tons of cabins around the area. An all wheel drive at least should be driving there bec the road could be closed due to some weather issues or bring chains with you just in case "chain up" sign is on. It gets warm during this time of the month and just perfect to dive in the water. Lots of crawfishes close to shore. Im sure yall will enjoy this place but always remember to respect our mother nature!

"Roughing it" ...near town, close to but not quite glamping...

Granite Flat is a great way to get out and camp without worrying too much about forgetting something. Now, I know no one WANTS to head back into town for the ice, eggs, or brew they forgot. But if you do, you're only 2 miles from the grocery store.

This campground is right along the Truckee river! It is RV/Camper, tent & dog friendly. Though there are very few "tent only" sites.

They have non-flushing restrooms with TP! (fancy outhouses)

You can park up to 2 cars per site

There is fresh, clean water located at pumps thruought the campground

PLENTY of space to pitch a tent

Bear boxes provided (we were lucky enough to see a mama and two cubs across the river from us!)

Fire pits and picknick tables

Super friendly camp hosts

We stayed here at 3 tent only sites, the night after our wedding with a group of friends! We all loved it and will definitely be back. You can float from one end of the campground down to the other end or keep going if you can find a ride (Uber) back to the campground! I hear the fly fishing on the Truckee river is fantastic as well. Due to the fact that we JUST got married the day before, we actually had our DJ come the the campsite and spin there. The people in the nearby sites were totally cool with it and we were respectful of quiet hours. So, as you'll see in the video, we had music. But typically the festival DJ doesn't come with the campsite. ;)

One negative to this campground is that the highway is right next to it. The Tahoe region is EXTREMELY popular so I'd suggest booking early if you can (though it seems you can find sites last min too) and know that if you're next to the highway, you'll hear cars/trucks passing through. By no means did any of my party feel that the vehicle noise was intrusive on our experience though. But it's food for thought.

Lastly, again you're near town and can head into Truckee for some tasty brew and food at many local breweries, breakfast, & BBQ spots! Plus the town of Truckee is super cute and should be explored of you haven't been.

Good enough

It's a well maintained campground that is very close to the freeway, you can access the river, but it is a bit further away than it is at Goose Meadows.

On the Truckee River, close to town, right on Hwy 89

This is a nice little campground to stay in while passing through. For longer stays I prefer sites that are off the beaten path and not right on the highway. Pros: easy river access for fishing, nicely wooded.

You might need earplugs

This is not a destination campground, nor a great site for tent camping. That said – it can be really hard to get a spot in Tahoe. This site saved our trip, and was conveniently located. It was fine for a weekend, or just passing through. We did not explore along the river too much, and that might have made it better. Okay place, but not what you think of when you say you are going to Tahoe to camp. Not much shade, rocky, small sites. The hosts were quite nice though. Picnic table, campfire ring and grill. Vault toilets.

The biggest downside is that it is right on a busy highway. There was always road noise which was quite loud at times. Also you’ll hear your neighbors – every word. You might not notice this so much in if RV camping? A lot of bear activity in the area so follow the rules keep your food locked up.

There is a grocery, pharmacy, fast food nearby which was handy too.

Loud traffic noise, small sites.

This was a "meh" kind of campground. Very loud traffic noise. We wanted to stay at Donner Memorial State Park but were unable to get reservations. We had a nice site right on the river and were able to put our chairs right next to the river and enjoy it ... until BUGS! Very buggy. We visited over Labor Day Weekend. Our site was small. We tested our propane heated hot water shower pump and shower enclosure for the first time here. TIP: Let water warm in the sun in a 5 gallon bucket as the ICY and our heater could not even get it to tepid, only cool, but we had an event to go to and needed to shower, so cool showers in the cool morning air it was. This was an okay campground for a stopover or if you are a fisherman. For a quiet getaway with large beautiful campsite ... nope. It all depends on what you are looking for.

Granite Flat

Nice campsite located right on Highway 89, 1 mile from Truckee and a short drive to Tahoe City. Right on the Truckee River and has 68 family sites and 7 walk in sites. Fishing is excellent from the banks of the river and this site is open from mid May - September. Closed during the winter months. The best sites are 6, 8, 10, and 10. $22 per night and reservable online. The Highway is loud during the day, that's the only downfall from this beautiful spot.

Camping by the river

Nice spot for a quick overnight. The campground is right on the Truckee River and on highway 89. The traffic is a bit loud, but it dies down at night.
