Directions

Taidnapam Park is about 110 miles south of Tacoma in Lewis County, near the town of Morton. From Tacoma, take I-5 south to Highway 12 East (Exit 68). Drive east on Highway 12 for approximately 37 miles (5 miles past Morton). Turn right on Kosmos Road, then left onto Champion Haul Road. Drive approximately four miles to the park entrance. An alternate route from Tacoma is to take Highway 7 south to Morton. At Morton, turn left onto Highway 12 and drive 5 miles. Turn right on Kosmos Road, then left onto Champion Haul Road. Drive approximately four miles to the park entrance.

Camping in the North Woods

This is a beautiful campground! Lots of tall trees, & ferns. Feels like you are in Boreal forests . Several shower/bathrooms buildings throughout the park. It adjacent to the Mount St Helen’s Volcanic Preserve, but on the back end. We hiked into the NP to Cathedral Falls. It is convenient for exploring Mt. Saint Helen’s, and Mt Rainer.

Great escape

We came here for the 4th of July to get away from the fireworks in the city (our dog is terrified of them!). We had an amazing experience! Campsites were smallish, and you definitely had very little privacy, but it was clean and people were nice. Since this is a Tacoma Power campsite, you also get free access to Mossyrock and Mayfield campsites (since there is no lake access at Taidnapam, this is incredibly useful). Ease of check in/check out was great, and overall we were very satisfied with the two days we spent here!

Great people and a stunning place

The young woman who checked us in was super helpful, offering maps of the area and suggestions. We scored a walk-in tent site ($22.) on Monday in the middle of August without a reservation. We actually camped on the parking lot in our rooftop tent, which was just fine and avoided the additional hookup fees of the alternative RV sites. The walk in sites are situated in a phenomenal little grove and felt partially private. RV sites are generously sized and full of trees. There are a considerable number of both pull in and pull through options. Bathrooms were clean, but there were quite a few spiders. Note that there is no swimming or boating in the lake, due to water levels dropping over 30 ft. Lots of kids enjoyed riding bikes around the campground loops. There are fish cleaning stations and firewood for sale ($5.) Pay showers. Recycling station.

Walk the surrounding trails. The lake, wetlands, and forest are lovely.

This was a convenient stop on the journey between Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens.

Spacious

Very popular area, I did get a site with full hookups. 95 degrees for two days of a 5 day stay. Riffe lake is just one of the attractions. The rivers were what I was interested in for fishing. The first time I saw red huckleberries. I was skeptical that these berries grew at 700’ elevation but once I found out that is what they were I gathered a few more. Not enough for pancakes but delightful.

Really nice campground

I read about this campground on a Facebook post and everyone that had stayed here loved it. We decided to give it a try. We were easily able to make short notice reservations. Even added an additional day after we had been here a couple days without a problem. As another review said, I think it's because the lake level is too low to swim or launch a boat here.

We stayed in an RV. While some sites are better than others, there really aren't any bad sites here. We had full hookups. I think about half the park does. All the sites are nicely spaced apart and we didn't feel cramped at all. There are many large sites.

The campground is very clean and well maintained and all the roads are easy to navigate.

There are a lot of cool places to see that aren't to far from here, so it makes a good place to stay to go exploring.

We will definitely stay here again.

We love Taidnapam

Taidnapam is a great place to bring your kids. There are some great spots to camp on both sides. The bathrooms are kept clean and super warm in the winter. The camp hosts are always very kind and drive by to offer firewood. My kids think it is the best place. They can ride their bikes, play at the park, and see lots of wildlife. Our only complaint would be the water levels being low. The swimming area is non existent.

Gem for Tenters with kids!

This campground is a strange hidden gem - stick with me through the downsides. Taidnapam is on Riffe Lake, which is created by a dam and as of about 2013 the water levels have been permanently lowered by 30-ish feet. This is bad news for people who only went there for boating and fishing and swimming in the swim area but for some of us it's actually good news.

The campground is slower than it used to be during the summer months due to the lowered water levels - but that means you can often still get a reservation at the last minute, especially for the walk-in tent sites (which is what we use). We have camped for three years now at the walk-in tent sites and it's a bit tougher to access the water but you definitely can still find plenty of places to get in or take a kayak down to the water. There's also lots of fun areas around the edge of the lake to explore that used to be under water - making for interested hiking.

We love this campground to go to with kids - the walk-in tent sites are great and the water is so shallow now for quite a ways out so the kids can play in the water and the sand/mud along the edge of the lake. There are so many nooks and crannies around the edge of the lake to explore with the kids - and we used an inflatable kayak while there to go across the lake. They also have a scavenger hunt of items hidden around the campground that you can do with your kids (or if they are a bit older they can do on their own) and a playground.

Great Park for Families

This is a great spot to explore some pacific NW beauty. The site features an assortment of camping spots, from tent to full RV hook up. Though the site is clean, and has ample hiking and recreation choices, there were quite a few small children here with their families. We had a ball singing and exploring though the park was quite busy and loud. Not a problem at all as long as you know this Park is mostly families. lots of great places nearby and the jaunt out to Finn Cidery is a must. A great drive to nearby Kingston in search of Bald Eagles was a success as we saw two in the trees near the bay. Wonderful people all around but we were camping during World Cup and lots of Europeans on holiday made some games a bit more colorful than usual. if you want silent serenity, this is not your spot during busy season. want some fun and a great place to set as base camp? this is a good spot.

Decent state park

Decent coin op showers. Nice walk in tent sites. Nice RV sites. Decent playground. Fishing bridge just a short walk. There's no store or anything. Can buy firewood nearby. Flush toilets. Cleaned regularly.
