State Park

Muskegon State Park is home to 3 miles of breathtaking shoreline (2 miles along Lake Michigan and 1 mile on Muskegon Lake), Snug Harbor, forested dunes, two campgrounds, picnic areas, multiple trails, and more. One of the park's popular features is the blockhouse that was originally built by the CCC in the 1930s to provide opportunities for visitors to see in all directions. It sits on the highest point in Muskegon County.

Great Park By Water

Great dunes covered in dune grass, beautiful water next to the pier where we can got to go fishing. Great Michigan sunsets, clean bathrooms and nice fire pits. Big lake and inlet lake available. Bait machine was so fun for me, it being my first. Showers really nice and clean. Sites close together hence the 4 not 5 stars but ppl are nice so no big deal. Camp activities for kids, all around great camp grounds.

Great site !

Lots of trees, so it’s cooler to camp. Just steps from Lake Michigan. Literally walk down some steps, and you’re at the beach. Clean bathhouse too, with plenty of hot water. And best of all, walking distance to an excellent ice cream stand.

Very nice campground with easy stair access to Lake MI

Beautiful campground with Lake Michigan beach accessible by stairs. Deck overlooking lake also. Beautiful beach. Very shaded campground. Shower facilities clean. Stayed in Mini cabin that sleeps 4 with 2 sets of bunk beds. Mini frig, microwave, lights, heat. Take your own fan for hot nights. Alcohol is not allowed

Campground within walking distance to Lake MI beach

Stayed in Mini Cabin #16 over New Years. Hoped to try Luge at the adventure park but no snow and temps too warm prior to our trip. Cabin sleeps 4 in 2 bunk beds. Mini frig, microwave and table with chairs. Electricity and heat. Great choice for winter camping. Sites look really close together for summer camping. I did not like the road being so close for road noise. Kids swing set needs updated. Pit ADA toilet very clean. Phenomenal lake overlook and steps to beautiful beach.

Muskegon

Muskegon State Park is one we have visited a couple times and thoroughly enjoyed. It provides one of the most beautiful beaches Michigan has to offer, and we enjoyed hiking several trails throughout the park. We haven’t camped there yet, but mostly that’s due to the fact that it’s seemingly a popular campground as every time I try to reserve a site it’s always full. Must be for good reason, and upon my reconnaissance of the campground which features sites within a couple hundred feet walking distance to the beach, I would agree. I am really eager to finally land a camping spot there next year. I know there is top notch fishing and kayaking in the area, as well. Muskegon is absolutely a outdoorsman’s paradise.

Winter camping

Campground was nice in the winter our spot was plowed out and had a reserved cone at it, the bathrooms are closed and water is off but the outhouse is open.

Right on the water! It’s so beautiful, there are stairs over the hill or you can walk down to the main beach entrance.

Across the road is the Winter complex, sledding, skating, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and luge course. Our kids had a blast here, they have tons of bonfire pits as well.

Cool Spot to Access Beach

Located adjacent to Lake Michigan, this park has two loops. We stayed at the South loop because nothing else was available...

South loop is prettier with its rolling hills in the dunes: however, it has fewer flat areas for tents and some sites can be overwhelmed by water during heavy thunderstorms... we saw that one night... While we had no issues in site 94A, site 95 was flooded - all their bedding was wet!

North Loop is pretty flat- better for tents. Plus, BONUS: the local ice cream stand is adjacent to the property, meaning you can walk 10 feet from the campground to get ice cream!!!

Dog owners: (which means me!)... the campground allows dogs on leash on its beach. The other state park public areas don’t!

I loved how the beach access area has handicapped accessible overview areas (see my pictures). When I go back, I will definitely bring a chair down there in the morning to hang out, read a book, and embrace the magic of Lake Michigan!

Sand Dunes & Gorgeous Lake Michigan Campground

We found a gorgeous campsite at this campground with Lake Michigan just over the sand dunes.

The campground was well maintained. Some of the campsites were sandy and unlevel.

Here are closeby fun things to do and see:

1.) The Muskegon South Pierhead Lighthouse is located on the channel in the harbor of Muskegon, Michigan.

2.) USS Silversides Submarine Museum with World War 2 submarines, gigantic torpedoes and more.

Campground steps away from Lake Michigan

Clean, shady campground with easy access to Lake Michigan beach. We stayed at site 50A right across from the steps down to the beach. There was no privacy, but it was a large corner lot with both water and trash steps away. Bath house had nice, clean individual showers and seperate multi stall restrooms. We have t mobile and had cell service at our site, but there is no wifi.

Loved this place

Awesome place to camp. With nearby mini gulf and go karts. We were only a short walk away from the beach. Host was awesome and served breakfast some mornings. Clean bathrooms. Will definitely be back.

Camping in Muskegon State Park

One of my favorite campsites in the state of Michigan. Have camped here 5 times now. Campsites have tree coverage and easy access to the lake. The beach accessed through this campground is one of the best in the state. Across from the campsite are many miles of beautiful hiking trails, including ones that go by the old luge track. The bathrooms in the campsite are some of the cleanest and showers are very nice. Campsites aren’t very private, which can be a downside if neighbors are loud.

Nice park on the lake

Camped here in July. The campground was very busy with a lot of families. The campsites were spacious, some rather sloped on the backside of the large sand dunes. There was a lot of tree canopy for shade as well, but little privacy between sites. Can’t stop from people watching if you tried. The restroom was large and the showers stay busy with folks washing off the soft sand from the beach area on Lake Michigan. There are wooden stairs to get over the dunes and down to the lake. At sunset it feels like half the campground gathers on those stairs to watch the sunset over the lake. We enjoyed that activity on the beach as well. Although the park was extremely busy, after the sun goes down it was fairly quiet.

Beautiful setting

camped here with family and we had an awesome time! it was a smidge loud since it’s next to the road, but nothing we couldn’t handle. The beach is right there at the campground, which is absolutely great. The other campground at Muskegon state park is the Channel campground, but if you’re camping at this one I still would say the channel is worth seeing! The woods surrounding are great for hiking, and we were excited to find geocaches around the park 😁

Every Year...

I have been coming to this campground since I was very young. It started as a small group of close family and friends. Everyone loved it so much they started inviting others and now we have a HUGE group that meets up every year. It is a highlight of my summer.

Love the beach during the day and at night. Being able to shower in clean facilities is nice and Ruth Ann’s ice cream is a short walk or bike ride to one end of the park. We are bringing our son back this summer to carry on the tradition.

We went in March so the weather was cold but doable. 20 degrees at night but with electricity hookups we put a space heater in our tent. Campsites are nice no running water at that time of year & only primitive outhouses. Great beaches the sand was so soft & the dunes are perfect.

Great beach, nicely shaded

We stay in this campground once per year with friends. Lots of the sites are slopped, but the extensive canopy provides lots of shade and the beach is exclusively for camper use. Great place to spend time with old friends. Make sure to try the ice cream shop just outside the North end of the park.

Ranger Review: Snapbuds at Muskegon State Park Lake Michigan Campground

Campground Review

Lake Michigan Campground in Muskegon State Park was a great place to pull in for the night. We had ice cream for supper at the adjacent ice cream shop (where they advertised a free cone with your firewood purchase). We pulled in and settled into our cabin with enough time to enjoy sunset over Lake Michigan from the stairs and overlooks along the beach. The campground is well kept and has a nice shady canopy. The sites are fairly large, but there are no shrubs or structures to provide privacy from neighbors. We reserved a camping cabin and found it clean and functional with power, 4 beds (bunks), mini fridge and microwave. The showers were good sized with plenty of hot water, but being beach style, there was a lot of bug access. Expect to shower with some insects. I was a frustrated birder - I could hear the birds but couldn’t pick them out visually since they were all up so high with no low cover. All in all I would say this is a great campground for beach access, better in the cabins or an RV than in a tent since there isn’t much privacy.

Ranger Review:

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to review occasionally. On this trip I had a chance to try out Snapbuds, an earbud detangling system. We received the snapbuds before we left Colorado and used the enclosed guide to get them set up on my earbuds - it was a snap! The instructions say they can’t be repositioned once in place, so we were cautious about setting them up right the first time. I don’t use my earbuds often on road trips since I’m the only driver and I like to listen for birds on a walk - but after a few long days in the car with my kids choosing the playlists, this mamma was super excited to whip my earbuds out! I had them shoved in the back of my purse where we’d been rummaging around for various things over the course of the trip, so they had every opportunity to be a tangled mess - but they came out in a neat little wad and unraveled easily to take me away from the teens fighting over beds. I was pleased with how neat they stayed. My one word of caution is that the magnets really like to stick together, and if you create slack while wearing your earbuds (by bending to pick up a perfect rock or acorn, for instance) they have a tendency to find one another and shorten your cord, potentially dislodging your earbud when you straighten back up.

Very generous camp sites, welcoming staff, wooded sites with tall maple tree canopies...down a decked stair case onto the white Sandy beaches of lake Michigan..the adjacent beach is expensive and has the feel of your own private beach.

Stay in the part of the campground near the channel!

I grew up in Muskegon. We spent our summers at the beach. The beach at the Muskegon State Park is beautiful white sugar sand. The part of the park closest to the channel tends to be quieter because there aren't the big RVs camped there. And it is closer to the beach, which is definite plus.
