About

National Forest

Pine Glen Recreation Area, nestled near Heflin, Alabama, is a solid spot for those looking to escape into nature without breaking the bank. This place is open year-round and offers a peaceful retreat with its secluded sites and the soothing sounds of Shoal Creek running nearby.

The campground is pretty basic but has what you need for a comfortable stay. Most sites come with picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern stands. Vault toilets are available, and while there's no running water, the creek provides a nice backdrop and a place for the kids to splash around. Just remember to bring your own drinking water and be prepared for no cell service—consider it a chance to truly unplug.

Getting here involves a bit of a trek on a dirt road, but it's well-maintained. The drive might be a bit bumpy, especially after rain, so a vehicle with decent clearance is a good idea. Once you're here, you'll find the sites are well-spaced, giving you a good amount of privacy.

Hiking enthusiasts will appreciate that the Pinhoti Trail runs right through the campground, offering plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding wilderness. If you're up for a bit of a drive, there's more to see and do in the area, but many find the tranquility of the campground itself to be the main draw.

At just $3 a night, Pine Glen is a steal. It's a great spot for tent camping, small campers, and even a bit of glamping if that's your style. Just don't expect luxury—this place is all about the simple joys of camping.
