Youghiogheny River Lake

Overview

The Outflow Camping Area is located on Youghiogheny River Lake in the heart of the Laurel Highlands. The lake spans the Mason-Dixon Line between Pennsylvania and Maryland. Clean waters, forested mountains and steep-sided valleys provide an unsurpassed setting for recreational opportunities.

Recreation

Camping, fishing, boating, water skiing, hiking, biking, picnicking and sightseeing are the area's most popular activities. Boaters consider Youghiogheny River Lake, with its 16-mile length and channels up to one-half mile wide, the best powerboating and water skiing lake in southwestern Pennsylvania. Youghiogheny Lake's outflow area is renowned for its excellent trout fishing and is stocked from April to September each year. A fishing pier is located in the campground.

Facilities

Natural Features

The country surrounding the lake is made up of narrow valleys and high rounded hills with steep slopes. Much of the land is covered with northern hardwoods including Beech, Sugar Maple, White Ash, Yellow Poplar and Basswood. A variety of wildlife makes its home around Youghiogheny River Lake, including deer, bear, turkey, grouse, rabbit and squirrel.

Nearby Attractions

Some of Pennsylvania and Maryland's finest state parks surround Youghiogheny Lake. Ohiopyle State Park is known for some of the best whitewater in the East and is often the location of national kayaking competitions. Cyclists enjoy the many miles of bike trails in the area. For the history buff, the area boasts many historical sites and parks. For sheer natural beauty, Youghiogheny Lake can't be beat.

Route 281 South from points north: continue south through Confluence and over the Casselman & Youghiogheny Rivers. Make an immediate left into the campground. Route 281 North from Route 40: continue north 7 miles past the Youghiogheny River Lake entrance. Make next right into the campground. Route 523 North from Route 40: continue north 7 miles to Confluence. Turn left onto Route 281 South, over the Casselman & Youghiogheny Rivers. Make next left into the campground.

Great campground!

Very nice campground. Facilities are very clean and well maintained. Certain facilities are open in winter to accommodate people engaging in winter activities. Fresh water available. Local stores offer quick shopping. Local restaurants have awesome food! There's are tons of things to do in this area.

Bikepacking GAP

Nice open area. Looked like only one tent pad site but plenty of grass with picnic tables. Bathroom was clean and a short walk.

Good place plenty to do

Took the family here plenty to do for kids playground went fishing in the outflow kids played in the water coldest water I ever stood in I would recommend this site if you have a boat the lake is not far at all

Overflow Parking is easy to access and did not require an additional fee. Our parents had their A-liner trailer on the site and their SUV. It did get tight so we moved my Honda CR-V to the over flow parking spots. It was an easy short walk to the parking lot.

The campground has easy access to the bike trail. You can see bikers camping in a certain spot for the special rate of $14.00 per biker. If you are a family of bikers it may make sense to book a traditional site.

The group campsites were awesome in size and ease for parking. One group site is fairly close to a bathroom. The 2nd group site (2A) is rather far out and would benefit from a porta john. The size limit caps at 150 campers. They have a price grid based on the number of campers. It is listed as a walk to site which is about 300 yards. The cars would be at the parking lot. 1-20 people$50, 21-40 people$60, 41-60$70, 61-80 people$80, 81-150 people$90. This site is only for non-profit groups and will need to show proof of their non-profit organization.

The beach is a short drive away over the dam. It was a great spot to spend the day with the kids floating and swimming. It was an active spot with families having a barbeque, birthday parties, and folks set up on the beach or in the upper grass area.

Next to the campground is a dairy bar that had great ice cream and food. You can either walk, bike, or even drive to it if you wish.

Army Corp of Engineers Site at Youghiogheny Lake Dam

September 2020 Stay

This was a 1-night stay. We stayed here because the nearby state parks we were interested in were full for the weekend. It was OK given the circumstances, but I would prefer a state park. The location was on the edge of town. The campground is right up against some people's backyards on one side, separated by a fence. So that felt a bit awkward and not really the secluded in-nature feel we're looking for when camping. We were at site 33 which was on that side right by someone's backyard. Sites were also fairly close with no trees or anything between for privay.

On the bright side, each site has a tent pad on gravel/dirt that is level with no rocks, tree roots, etc. that you might have elsewhere. The site was also right along the GAP so it may be a good place to overnight if you're doing a long bike trip.

Great for families and small groups

Great little campground for smaller groups/families/couples! Very good environment right next to the GAP. Right on the river and was nice and quiet! Bathrooms weren't bad, but could have been a little cleaner.

Rules, lights, and no trees

When we arrived and checked in we were immediately handed a 2 page long sheet of rules to review. No touching the trees or alcohol were among the list. We drove through a paved parking lot to find our site with a 10x10 rock slab for our tent, surrounded by freshly mowed grass, large RVs, concrete curbs, and a chain link fence. The security guard came by mulptile times to either tell us we were breaking a rule or just to spy. Right next door is a trailer park so as soon as the sun went down, the flood lights came on. No peace, no quiet, no privacy, no nature.

pleasant and convenient campground

The campground is located along the Great Allegheny Passage, and the Yough river and lake. It is a great place if you like to bike, paddle, or fish. Convienent to restaurants im Confluence Pa. The campground itself Is ok -Its clean amd the bath house is clean also - there just are not any private camp sites and not much shade

Serviceable campground

Pros: Reasonably priced, fairly quiet campground with full shower and bath houses. The tent site I was in was also nicely designed, with a tent 'pad', as well as full campfire ring, picnic table, and lantern hanging hook. There are tent, RV, and group sites at this campground.

Cons: The bath/shower houses could've used a much better cleaning (but were not the worst I've encountered). Also, I'm not from the area, and the drive to get to this out-of-the-way campground was awful. It's really far from a main highway (which isn't so bad), but the roads to get to the campground are hilly, winding country roads with 55 mph speed limits that I found way too fast if you're not a local. And the locals are really aggressive drivers.
