About

State Park

Situated on a wooded peninsula, Tugaloo’s cottages and most campsites offer spectacular views of 55,590 acre Lake Hartwell in every direction. Some cottages even have private boat docks for overnight guests. Tent campers can choose between the developed campground or primitive sites located a short walk from the parking area. During summer, the lake is a popular destination for swimming, water skiing, sailing and boating. Both the Sassafras and Muscadine hiking trails wind through oak, walnut, mulberry and cherry trees. Tugaloo State Park boasts a six-lane mega ramp used for large fishing tournaments and easy lake access. Fishing is excellent year-round, and large-mouth bass are plentiful. The name “Tugaloo” comes from an Indian name for the river which once flowed freely prior to the construction of Hartwell Dam.

Summer Kick-Off

We love Tugaloo! One of our favorite campgrounds, with so much to do. Our sites this go around were the absolute best, so wide and roomy, probably two of the best sites in the campground. Lake is right across the way from us for some beautiful views, nice beach swimming and parking the boat. The campground has awesome activities through the summer for the kids and for families. Definitely a much visit!

Nice, Clean Campground

Really enjoyed our stay here. We camped over Thanksgiving 2022. Campground had very clean facilities, however our nearest bathhouse didn't have hot water, but they were waiting for a new water heater. Camp host was very friendly. Sites were good size with a nice view of the lake. Campground was quiet at night. Roads were a little narrow for larger rigs but look to be well maintained.

Do not follow RV Life GPS down CR84!!

Title says it all! Their GPS directions took us down an impassable washed out county road! Avoid it and go straight! 3 more right turns and you’ll get here much easier!

Once we actually arrived to our site, it was beautiful and easy to pull through. Only a little off level, which we fixed easily. Great cement benches and huge fire fits on site. Very spacious with a decent view of the lake. Clean facilities, showers have super strong pressure and do heat up quite well if you give it a few minutes.

Overall an amazing campground worth visiting!

Walk-In Sites 9, 10 & 11

Stayed at site 10 while our friends were at site 11. Sites are connected by a path but are not visible to one another. Sites 9 & 10 would be a better combination if you are camping together and especially if you plan to share resources. All three sites are a short walk in from the parking lot but site 11 is closest to the paved path with minimal slope on the path. Site 10 is the furthest from the paved path. 9 & 10 must leave the paved path and go down a pretty good slope. Site 10 is the only one with a direct view of the lake. There is a path from the site down to a nice beach area where the kids swam and launched our kayaks. This path is also fairly steep and winds around a bit. Each of these sites has power and water right at the tent pad. The tent pads are decent sized and filled with small gravel with lots of larger rock just below the surface. It was a bit of challenge getting all the tent stakes into the ground. All of my stake tips have been blunted. The bathrooms are a short walk from the sites and were clean during our stay. The park offered many activities, but my review is getting too long.

Good campground

This campground has a lot of sites on the water front.

We only stayed one night on our way to N.C. and it was about right length as I was ready to go. The lake is really great, but our view was through the forest, so It wasn't as good. They have some really cool looking cabins that would be a fun way to spend some time.

The visitors center had nothing of interest for me or my son which is the first time this has ever happened. No cool decals to adorn the back of our trailer. Oh well.

Bathrooms seemed clean. The sites are well spread out with the exception of waterfront and some are almost directly on the road. Our's was. I think if we had more time and rented a kayak or a canoe (Which are available, it would have been more fun).

Best Yurt Camping

Yurt camping was 5 stars here. The yurts were very private and spaced out. We went during the week and we were the only ones there. There was a private sandy beach area to fish or play from. If you’re looking to go yurt camping I highly recommend staying here. Yurt 6 looked the best.

Great Lake

This is a great campground. Lots of spacious campsites. Lots of choices. We were lakeside on a pull through that was a bit short for us. The site was amazing we could kayak up to our site. Pet friendly, family friendly. Power, Electric, gray water dumps near each site. Washer and dryer in each bathhouse. A beautiful campground.

Fun

It’s always such a good place to escape when we want a short getaway! The lake is always a good time and the campground is large! The beach is such a great go to during the hot summer months for the kids, and has a great park next to it. The park near the campground has been updated and is a hit with our son. So many hiking trails throughout the park as well. You can’t go wrong with this park!

By far our Favorite Park

This was our first official RV trip in our personal RV. We’ve stayed at National campsites in rentals and cabins. Yet this location was one of our favorites. The amenities they offer and the space they provide between campsites. We’re able to fish, swim, and so much more right at our camp site. The park beach is just another enjoyable pleasure!

Beautiful, But Cramped

Our lakefront site #72 was gorgeous, but a VERY tight fit for our 36' pull behind and crew cab truck. Narrow roads made navigating VERY difficult for all. Probably won't come back because of I85 and narrow roads & tight spaces within the campground. Water crystal clear and lovely.

Tugaloo State Park keeps on giving

Spent another 3 nights at Tugaloo State Park. It is our happy place. Our campsite was extraordinary. Beautiful sunrise each morning and the weather was perfect camping on the lake weather. There is so much to do at this park or just relax watching the boats go by.

Lake fun at Tugaloo State Park

We have camped at Tugaloo State Park in Georgia on many occasions. It is literally around the corner from our home but we love to take a break and camp at this gem. Most spaces are on Lake Hartwell. They are clean and not too close together. The camp director puts on many fun activities for the kids on the weekends from scavenger hunts to learning about the many animals that call this park home. You have your choice of sunrise or sunset views.

Nearby, but not at the top of my go-to places.

Although a nice campground several things turned me off about this campground. Mainly the lack of enforcement of dogs running loose, owners not cleaning up after their dogs and enforcement of number of people on a site. The roads into the campground loops are narrow in spots and not well marked at all. Backing our 30' motorhome into our site required asking the neighbor to move his truck off our site and maneuvering around other vehicles parked in the road. The site was fairly level and offered a picnic table and fire ring with quite a bit of grassy area. Unfortunately, the neighbor on that side decided it belonged to them and set up games in it, then near dark other people joined them and set up a third tent in that area. Sites are 30/20 electric and water, but there is a dump station. This has the potential to be a very nice campground, and I'll go back sometime. Perhaps we just had one bad experience so we'll try it again sometime.

Great water views

We stayed in campsite 71 for three nights in late January. The weather was chilly but calm. We loved the water views and the quiet setting. During the weekdays we were almost alone in our portion of the park, so we enjoyed taking the dog down to the little beach area (as there was no fishing). The weekend resulted in quite a bit of traffic as all the waterfront lots were filled. Decent separation between stalls, but lost the woody feel instantly.

We selected a site fairly close to the bathhouse, but those facilities were closed the entire time we were there. I didn’t observe any signage about why these where closed. This created a longer walk to the showers than desired in the 30-degree nights.

We arrived after hours and tried to check in the next morning. The office staff was very strict about observing their lunch hour. They were walking out as we were walking up and didn’t offer to assist us. There was no answering machine either as we tried to call a couple times once the lunch hour was over. Once we did make contact they were super friendly and helpful.

Great Campground

My wife and I decided to make a last minute trip to Tugaloo State Park this past weekend. The sites were large and spacious. We were in site #8 right on the lake. Water, electric and cable tv connections. No sites with sewer, but dump station has two receptacles so there was no wait to dump tanks on way out.

Great Lake campground

Really enjoyed the lakefront campsites. We stayed at site 7 which is a pull through. We had camper and extra car with boat and kayak and fit with a little extra room. Able to kayak right from campsite. Campground has over 100 sites. None of the lake front were bad, some were low level, some had fenced railing with a little drop. All had great views some interior lots had lake views. Some interior lots were close together. Bath houses were very clean and spacious. Have a couple of hiking trails. I did the Sassafras’s Loop trail which follows the lake shore most of time and great views the rest. Our dogs loved all the space, no swimming due to temperatures in the 40s. Lots of stars at night. Very clean and well kept park. Camp hosts were helpful. Very nice staff at the Visitor Center, registration area. They also have cabins with docks and yurts as well. Great views from them as well. Will be back in warmer weather.

Glamping in a yurt

Great park to visit for a night. Has a beach. It is lacking trails to explore compared to other parks. Yurts are super nice. Warm in the summer though. Yurt 6 has its own private beach area ;)

Not the best State Park

This is one of my least favorite State Parks. You are packed in, sites close together. I usually love State Parks for the privacy. Not the case at this park. If you book early and get a water front sites, they were nice. Not big rig friendly. I have a 43ft 5th Wheel and it was very tight navigating through the park. Electric 30amp and Water only. Dump station has easy access. Trash was not picked up around trash cans. We actually left a day early.

Awesome!

We just got home from here. Love this place! We had site 51, on the water. It was a lake front pull through and it was great! Even has cable. And the Verizon and AT&T signal was good. This campground is huge, with lots of bath houses that are clean. Can’t wait to go again.

One of our Favorite Parks in North Georgia

Tugaloo state Park: This Georgia State Park offers a multitude of activities from hiking, paddling, boating, fishing, swimming, putt putt, tennis/pickleball court and biking the park roads to name a few things. This park appears to be a local favorite and weekends were more active than weekdays during our 10 night stay at the camp ground. We really felt at home here due to the friendliness of the park staff and camphost volunteers. We loved the gravel sites, good Verizon cell reception 📶 and best of all the ease of access to our kayaks🛶. (Do check with the park office because some things like putt putt may be seasonal) 🔔 Another thing- should you want to rent a patio boat ⛴ - the park office has some numbers for you.

We stayed here in late October for 10 days and didn’t want to leave. The campground is laid out well with gravel sites, concrete picnic tables, fire pit, water, 30 amp and grey water drains throughout the campsite areas. 🚍Larger rigs—> Bring a dogleg/bone for double 30 amp.👍. Also- be aware some of the pull thru sites are almost buddy sites - your truck hauling your trailer will fit but your trailer won’t because another camper is sharing the pull thru lane with you. Rv’s with Tows won’t have this same issue. 🏡Cabins- I shared on the video that cabins 1-10 have less stairs if that is important to you. Yurts- some of these are on a hill- this means a walk up to restrooms ...but don’t worry, there is a nicely paved sidewalk. 🏕 no electricity at the walk in sites- you do have water, fire pit and picnic table. There is a group campground too.

We did 2 videos of this park- so there is lots of info about all the amenities at this park. ***This is a park we have put on our favorite list to camp host here in the future.

Lake Hartwell Retreat

This is a large campground. It has multiple boat launches with easy access to Lake Hartwell. Well maintained bath houses. Friendly staff and camp hosts. We stayed in the first loop with sites 1-26. It was a small campground within the larger campground and park. It was quiet and over half the sites have a view of the lake or are on the lake. We stayed on 26 and were very happy with our location. The park has a beach with concession stand. We do not think we would have liked the larger side of the campground as sites were much closer together. We travelled to Toccoa Falls, Tallulah Gorge, Lake Rabun, Helen, Anna Ruby Falls, Dahlonega and Hartwell. We would love to go back and visit the towns of Lavonia, Cleveland and Clarksville, and go back to Southern Hart Brewery in Hartwell.

Water all around

Water water everywhere. On the Georgia side Tugaloo State Park is Located on Lake Hartwell on the Georgia/South Carolina state line.

Getting to the campsites is pretty tight but once you are parked, it is just beautiful overlooking the lake. Lots of fun for families who enjoy the water. Also you can see fishing boats zoom to their fishing location at night. Peaceful and calming rest from the corporate life!

Beautiful sites, right on the lake

This is a beautiful park. All of Georgia’s state parks are nice, this is one of the nicest. Most sites are right on the lake. It’s very popular in summer and reservations are necessary. When we were there there was a heated dispute between two families over who had reserved a site! Great swimming and fishing! Full hookups, dump station!

Quiet and clean

The kids and I stayed here for a weekend (mid March) to try out our new camper. We got a waterfront site and it was gorgeous! Not as big as some places we have been, but large enough. Some of the non-waterfront sites appeared to be MUCH smaller.

The restrooms in our area were spotless and cleaned multiple times per day. My son said the ones near the beach area had a few spider webs, but considering it wasn’t even remotely warm yet, they probably weren’t being maintained as often as the campground ones just yet.

Staff was friendly and helpful, fishing was so-so (from the back of our campsite, anyway, and probably moreso due to our lack of skill than actual fish quantity). They have recently repaved the roads and it was very easy to get around. There are two playgrounds: a larger one by the beach and a smaller one in the campground area (which also has a huge field).

Our spot was level left to right but had a slight slope front to back.
