Overview

Modoc Campground is a popular park on J. Strom Thurmond Lake, just 5 miles from the Thurmond Visitor Center and Dam. The 70,000 acre lake and its 1,000+ miles of shoreline provide excellent boating, water skiing, swimming, fishing, hiking and picnicking.

Recreation

Thurmond Lake provides some of the best fishing, hunting and water sports in the southeastern United States. Anglers fish for largemouth bass, bream, crappie, catfish and striped bass. The large lake offers endless boating, water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing and swimming opportunities.

Facilities

Natural Features

Hot, humid summers and mild, pleasant winters characterize this heavily wooded area on the shore of Thurmond Lake. A mixed pine and hardwood forest covers the site, providing summer shade and fall color. Wildlife is abundant around the lake. Visitors regularly see southern bald eagles, migratory waterfowl, wild turkeys and whitetail deer.

Nearby Attractions

Numerous parks and recreation areas lie around Thurmond Lake, providing additional boating, swimming, hunting and hiking opportunities. Nearby cities house museums, art galleries, zoos, restaurants, and shopping areas. The Augusta National Golf Club hosts the Masters Golf Tournament annually the first week of April.

From I-20, take Exit 200 (River Watch Parkway). Turn right, drive 2 miles to Furys Ferry Road (HWY 28 West). Turn right, drive 13 miles to Clarks Hill, SC. Continue northwest on HWY 221 for approximately 4 miles to campground entrance.

A very nice a State Park

We spent a Monday to Thursday at Modoc in late May. We literally had our section of the campground all to ourselves. Quiet beautiful good fishing, minimal bugs, waded in the sandy edge of the lake. We will be back.

Excellent Camping Sites & Scenery

This is a federal campground on which sites are spread out. The roads are paved throughout, but the campsites are gravel. The roads are great for bike riding and walking. Sites have electricity and water. Bath houses are older but clean. Wildlife live in the woods around the sites. I've seen deer, a bobcat, and various water fowl. Fishing, boating, and swimming can be enjoyed here. The lake is awesome. A big draw for me is the scenery on the lake and the lack of mosquitoes. This is a peaceful place.

Beautiful but horrible

Absolutely the worst camping experience we have ever had! We have camped all over this beautiful country in all types of campgrounds from ones with full services to dispersed/primitive areas and everything in between and have never experienced such horrible conditions and staff. The couple that “runs” the place are very sweet but do not monitor the park at all, they don’t clean the bathrooms and showers and the women’s showers had no hot water. We had at least two dozen people at the site next to us who stayed up till 2 am both nights we were there and despite us informing the front office after the first night they still never came by to enforce any quiet time or parking issues etc. We should not have to call police on people and risk being targeted for something that is their JOB. But instead the drunk neighbors decided to report us for leaving our teenage son at the site to fish while we took our younger son to ride his bike. The park ranger Suzanne (not the camp hosts) came down when we retuned to the site to question us about the age of our son and lied to us saying she had been down patrolling and noticed he was alone. She was aggressive from the moment she entered our site then demanded that I control my dogs who were on leashes and only barked when she continued to be aggressive, they were not aggressive towards her or anyone else at any time. She then insisted that we never reported the ongoing disturbances with the neighbors to anyone (we reported it to both the husband and wife on two separate occasions and had even asked to move sites) and that we were the problem and needed to leave immediately. We agreed that we did not want to stay anyways and began packing up, as we were leaving we stopped at the front to check out and return the car tag and then the ranger pulled up behind us there and was aggressive again. We simply were trying to enjoy a weekend with our family and dogs at the lake but it’s obvious we came to the wrong place.

Modoc campground

Great campground with large spacious sites.Dont expect a 5 star experience with the bathhouses.They are old but are clean and function just fine for our family

COE does it again. Great sites, forestry but water front , great cell coverage

The third COE we have stayed at on J. Strom Thurmond dam. (Basically we spend a week at each cos of limited availability) We stayed in GA and SC sides of the lake and two out of three have great cell coverage on ATT and Verizon - this one is great in that regard. Guess it can vary from site to site , so check it out. ( we were in #21) Great walks, also beaches and boat ramps. Definitely will come back to these delightful COE.

We do not use showers and restroom facilities so cannot comment on them

Peaceful and secluded

Lake facing sites well spaced apart makes it feel as if you have the forest and lake to yourself. Great cell coverage with AT&T. Highly recommend.

Happened Upon This One

Monday, September 14th. Warm and muggy with rain here and there. Went to my planned campsite Lake Springs, which was closed for the season. My late start along with the closed campground meant I would be looking in the dark. Luckily right up US 221, I found the Army Corp of Engineers Modoc Campground. It was way after dark as I drove around looking for a site marked open. I found one and set up camp. The next morning I broke camp and drove around and checked things out in the daylight. It's a very nice campground!

Excellent and then some!!

Didn’t know exactly what to expect but Wen were definitely pleasantly surprised. Many beautiful lakefront spots to choose from.

Great Spot!

We tent camped here and were definitely the minority. Lots of RVs and pull behinds. Sites were well spaced. We had 15 and it was great, I would stay at the same site again. Water and electric at all sites. Access to water from majority of sites. Bath house was clean enough. Front desk attendants were wonderful. We loved this place and plan to return!
