Directions

Located in a small cove along the northern shore of Skilak Lake. Turn onto Skilak Lake Loop Road at mile 75.3 on the Sterling Highway and travel 5.3 miles east on Skilak Lake Loop Road. Follow the sign 1 mile southwest to Lower Skilak Campground Road.

Amazingly beautiful

Was amazed with the beauty and trails in this area. The campsite for tents have to be hiked in to get to. The RV sites can accommodate tent camping, with smaller tents. So many options to do, you easily forget you don’t have cell service. There are trails, lakes, site seeing and enjoying the peace. We saw black bears, mamma and cubs. Very curious cubs got very close, momma didn’t seem to mind or get aggressive. Still be prepared for an encounter for your safety. There were lots of smaller critters we saw/heard and signs of moose. We have plans to visit other lakes, trails and camp sites along this route.

No cell service so bring a book

Really nice little campground. There were a number of other pay places that were full. We were luck to find a pull out. There is not charge for these spots and most have picnic tables and are right on the shore of the lake. Pit toilets are well maintained but is always suggest bring your own toilet paper because you just never know.

Fire Damaged

Went to check out Lower Skilak Lake Canpground and if course due to the Swan Lake fire this year it is closed. Unfortunately the fire damage looks to have maybe taken out the whole campground so please double check before you go. I hope they restore this beautiful campground for next season.

A haven away from Anchorage

Rough road to get there, but totally worth the mud!

Great fishing and plants keep outdoor lovers entertained for hours

please don’t run your rv generator all night and watch tv. Please, enjoy the silence and appreciate this place on earth; for yourself and your fellow campers

beautiful lake

this is a beautiful lake to bring your family to and camp. There are restrooms nearby, a boat dock, parking lot, and campsites which can be hard to find during the busy season of summer. My family and I have camped here and loved it.

Beautiful

Such a gorgeous place! I love this lake. It's absolutely magical and I've always had a good experience. It is quite cold, with a chill coming from the water, so be aware of that and plan accordingly.

Beautiful site on the lake

Rocky shores, dense woods, snow-capped peaks, wildlife...yet another quintessential Alaskan campground. Bring a kayak or other watercraft!! Nice hiking trails nearby, nothing too strenuous. Run by USFW, very clean. Like all car campsites, you don't always feel totally alone here but you get enough solitude and everyone was very quiet and friendly. It can fill up in summer (no reservations) but there are a lot of other sites nearby.

Great Fishing

This is a good short weekend trip from Anchorage with some great fishing on the lake or in the rivers nearby for some salmon. Downside: hard to get a site very busy.
