Table of Contents

Summary: Open and Closed Campgrounds due to COVID-19

National Parks and Forests

Park officials at all major NPS sites are taking precautions to avoid the spread of COVID-19 at parks, and a majority of parks have closed or limited visitor operations, including welcome centers, ticketing offices and campgrounds. While following safety guidelines from local and federal governments, National Parks are beginning to reopen after COVID 19 closures.  Parks plans to reopen in phases so prepare for limited operations, closed campgrounds and visitor centers.  Plan ahead by contacting parks prior to visiting and making advanced camping reservations.  See the full list of National Parks whose operations have changed due to the Corona Virus below or see all alerts from NPS.

A majority of national forests, managed by the US Forest Service, are operating on a case-by-case basis for day-use and overnight stays remaining open. Check your individual state below for more information on national forests open or closed due to COVID-19

State Parks, Forests and Public Campgrounds

As of 3/31, more than 30 states have closed campgrounds or delaying their openings to correspond with new guidelines on social gatherings to prevent the spread of COVID-19. For individual parks and campgrounds closed in each state, read our state-by-state guide below.

RV Parks and Private Campgrounds

Private RV parks and campgrounds in the U.S. are deemed “essential” by local governments on a case-by-case basis. It is recommended to call and check for openings for any private RV parks and campgrounds in the U.S.  Download The Dyrt app to find contact info and directions to camping nearby.

So far, announcements have been made in Connecticut, Virginia, Maryland that declare all RV campgrounds in those states as non-essential, and closed until further notice. New York, California, Delaware, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Washington and Tennessee have deemed RV campgrounds as essential services, and are open depending on the ownership. In Pennsylvania, Oregon, Texas and Florida, local cities and counties are deciding on a case-by-case basis the status of RV parks.

Most KOAs are currently open but may have restrictions based on the specific campground.
