Where to go in the monongahela national forest

Another huge area with no clear destination point. What are the best areas to see and camp in?

We camped at Seneca Rocks last year! It was beautiful, and there was a good amount to do within an hour or so from there. There’s no cell service at all since it’s in the national radio dead zone, but there’s a little general store with wifi you can stop and download maps at! We loved it.

It’s best to take Monongahela NF in sections- because of it’s sheer size. What you find in one section (say- the Seneca Rocks/ Seneca Shadows area) will differ than the Marlinton area. Seneca has rock climbing, access to resorts, damn good food( look up Davis, WV) and back country camping like nothing else in the area(Dolly Sods). Marlinton has access to cabins, science (Green Bank, Cranberry center), Train rides, but not much in the foodie range. Do a little research and you’ll find exactly what you want/need in you next adventure.

Check out Seneca Rocks, Blackwater Falls, Spruce Knob, Cass Railroad, Falls of Hills Creek, Cranberry Glades, Green Bank Observatory. Beartown State Park is so cool. We have camped at Blackwater Falls State Park and it was great!

I don’t know if it’s technically within the National Forest, but I highly recommend Watoga State Park, especially the Riverside campground if you can get a site right on the water. It’s the largest state park in West Virginia and is central to many activities in the area.
