We have a campervan and when we visited (July 2016) we didn’t plan ahead and found the Badlands NP Cedar Pass Campground full. The Sage Creek Campground (free primitive campground on the west side of the park) is about 1.5 hours away from the Cedar Pass Campground and Visitor Center so we tried the nearby Badlands/White River KOA but it was also full.

BUT… we found that we could boondock in Buffalo Gap National Grassland (http://www.fs.fed.us/grasslands/) adjacent to the park. SCORE! The motor vehicle use map pointed us to a location just outside a park entrance. We picked a spot as a storm rolled in. We watched, from our private field of grass, the sky turn from clear to dark and stormy and back again; illuminating the badlands. It was spectacular experience.

Honestly we loved the group camping area. This is in the South Dakota part (there’s a North Dakota Badlands so I’m not sure which you are referring to). The group area has a fantastic formation right there that can be climbed and it was amazing at keeping the kids in our group entertained.
