Daisy Field Campground — Potawatomi State Park

If you want a more peaceful getaway in Door Co (in the fall) Potawatomi is a good bet.  It's not in the center of the Door Co hubBub - but it's close and a lovely park in it's own right.  The campground is away from the water but trails leave right from the campground to get into the park and near the water...and there is a nice selection of trails to choose from.  Our campsite was one of many surrounding an open area that was nice as it was quite rainy when we were there so less claustrophobic than being buried deep in the woods.  Our campsite was separated nicely from adjacent ones though a little small, especially as we also had a tarp (did I say it was rainy?!?!). So often I think this Park is overlooked because it is south of the main Door Co energy - but it is a park well worth visiting - It's also where the Ice Age Trail starts!!!

Very quiet mid week in the fall

Beautiful campground. I spoke with the very helpful park ranger who directed me to some hiking trails through the woods with some overlooks. If I didn't know about this hike the stay would not have been as great. Talking with the rangers is a good thing to remember at the state parks. They can clue you in to some adventures.

Potawatomi State Park

The campground was set up easy to get to, and had plenty of space to set up our tent /hammocks. Each individual camp sight had a nice built in firepit with a grate over half of it to cook on if you wanted to. Walking trails were easily accessable and well kept. There was 1 flushable bathroom with showers both were well kept, and the showers had plenty of hot water. The best part about this camp was the low amounts of people and the views that you can see.

Camping 

Potawatomi State Park in Wisconsin sits in the northeast corner of the state in Door County Wisconsin. This is one of five state parks in the area and if you're making your way into Door County it is the first Park in Door County up Highway 42\. This area of the state is the gem of Wisconsin and not just for tourist reasons. The topography in this part of the state is phenomenal. Potawatomi State Park is just before the city of Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. This is a major port from the Bay of Green Bay into Lake Michigan. In Sturgeon Bay there are many shops, restaurants, pubs, art studios, and even a Walmart and Target if neede. The views from the shipyards can leave you in awe if this isn't a familiar sight. Potawatomi state park is the start of the Ice Age Trail which covers 1, 200 plus miles in the state. it offers modern facilities with showers and flush toilets. The showers are in the same room as the bathroom stalls. The park offers excellent hiking trails with views of ships coming and going from Lake Michigan in to Sturgeon Bay. The park offers an observation tower, once reach to the top you will have spectacular views of the Bay of Green Bay as well as the rest of Door County Wisconsin. The campgrounds are split into two sections. The Southern campground is a bit more wooded compared to the North campground, but I prefer the Northth sites as it offered more of a variety of campsites, meaning they don't all look the same. There is a camp store at the park as well as a small playground for the little ones. There are plenty of picnic areas especially on the shore but there is no beach at the park. There is a boat landing and fishing and this can be a popular spot for boaters to launch your boat.

This is a great park to start your vacation in Door County even if it's just to take in the sights. It is an even better place to stay if you want to be close to amenities but away from the tourists in the area. Amenities are not far, plan on a 5-10 min drive. This is my park of preference for camping in this area!

IMO best place to camp in Door County. Hiking , biking, great jump off point to see the peninsula.

We were tent camping in site 121. The site was very large and not very close to the next site over, it didn’t appear that many sites were very close together. The trails from the site were very scenic and perfect for all abilities both biking and hiking. The only downside was we arrived over an hour before the office closed and the rangers had already left for the evening. 

Great park with great sites

Coming was great. Needs some improvements on the hiking areas.

Big state park

Nice sized sites. Nice bathrooms. Loved the hiking trails. We were able to get a walk-in site with electric. It was before memorial weekend so nice and quiet.

Great camping in Door County

As an RV camper, we often struggle with state parks and finding a wooded campsite that will fit our camper. This campground had lots of electrical only sites that were shaded, some having awesome cliffs and rock features. The bathrooms were nice and showers clean, and there’s a full camp store that also rents small water craft. It’s right on the ice age trail, and there are 3 and 5 mile paved loops for running or biking. Lots of small beaches (rocky) and little places to picnic. We rode an easy 2 miles to Mary’s Waterfront restaurant to enjoy cocktails and dinner on the lake. It’s an easy drive to all of the Door County activities you’d like, without the crowds of Peninsula State Park. The campsites were very spacious, so we had room to set up tents next to our RV. We would gladly stay again!

Tons of Hiking!

**General:** Located along Sturgeon Bay in the southern part of Door County, Potawatomi’s Daisy Field Campground is divided into two loops: north and south. In addition to paying the campsite fee, you need to pay a daily ($11) or annual ($38) for an out-of-state fee (slightly less for residents). The gate attendant tried to charge us for three days - we were camping for two nights but we convinced him this should not be the case. These additional fees are making private campgrounds much closer in cost and a bit more desirable. Note: you are near the Door County regional airport; we heard many planes in the early evening, but it quieted down later. 

  

**Site Quality/Facilities:** 125 sites in two loops. Gravel pads except for the two handicap accessible sites in the south loop plus one handicap accessible cabin in the south loop. Be aware that in the south loop, many (but not all) of the even-numbered sites on the north side (10-46) slope upward and/or sideways while many of the odd-numbered sites (33-43) tend to slope downward. The sites on the south side of the loop appeared to be more level. Our site (40) was challenging for our camper van to find a level spot (it tended to slope sideways no matter what we did). Even-numbered sites in the north loop (86-102) appeared to be more level and they have a filtered bay view but they are right on the road. Each site has a fire ring and large picnic table; some are electric and some with no hook-ups. The sites are all wooded and there is reasonable separation between them. There is a nature center, camp store and sports rentals available between the two loops. Firewood is also available for $7 a bundle. 

  

**Bathhouse:** There is only one bath/shower facility between the two loops which was not nearly adequate for 125 sites (this is not the first Wisconsin state park we’ve been in that has had only one bath house for the entire campground). It was reasonably clean, but it looked like their idea of cleaning was to blast it with a power hose as the floors, sinks, and toilets were extremely wet just after cleaning. The showers were ok, but you have to keep pressing the button every minute to keep the water flowing. There are several vault toilets – I saw two in the south loop and one in the north loop. 

  

**Activities/Amenities:** Several hiking trails lead directly from the campground. We hiked the Ice Age Trail from the campground to the observation tower but were dismayed to discover it is permanently closed due to structural issues. There are sport rentals (bikes, kayaks, etc. available) which is a nice amenity. 

  

Don’t get me wrong – we enjoyed our stay here but with state parks increasing their costs (especially for non-residents), it was only $7 less to stay here in a tent site than it did at the private campground we stayed at the previous night with more amenities and cleaner/more modern bathrooms.

Costs keep rising

Camped for two nights in the northern loop. The camp store is fantastic -- lots of camping gear, snacks, beer, ice cream, and merch. The bathrooms were clean and the showers had nice hot/warm water! The hand dryer in the ladies bathroom is useless, though, so I ended up just having to air dry.

  

Amazing hiking and sights! Very close to the water and trails. The shoreline is rocky and definitely not meant for swimming. The boat launch is north of the campground and even has a fish-cleaning station. You can rent kayaks and paddleboards from the camp store and then launch them at the boat landing.

  

VERY VERY noisy campground. Lots of screaming kids and barking dogs and loud-talking. While this doesn't bother a lot of people, it made it difficult to really relax. Also, this isn't a reflection of the park at all -- of course it's a popular campground, as it has a lot of amenities and activities. I knew what I was getting myself into!

  

The sites are pretty close to one another but there are a lot of trees and greenery, so you still feel like you're in your own space. The bathrooms are all very clean and within short walking distance from the sites. 

  

Next time I visit, I will do it in April/May or September/October so that I can avoid peak season, but I'll definitely be coming back!
