Copper Falls State Park Campground

A popular campground for good reason.  We were able to get a site without a reservation mid week in Oct. but would have liked to stay longer.  We had a nice site in the woods - semi private in feel, lots of toads!!! The hiking in this park is excellent - observation areas, water falls etc. There were open areas nearby too so we were able to do some kite flying!   We also spent a little bit of time in nearby Mellen  - the little historical society museum was wonderful ... very eclectic and all things Mellen.

Absolutely Stunning!

Didn't spend the night here but were there for some day hikes.  Cool area with great little easy hiking and beautiful falls.  Campground seemed well maintained with adequate facilities and nice spots.  Great place to bring the family for the weekend.

Cool area

Best backpacking site that I have been to in Wisconsin. A little over 2 mile hike to get to the site. Very secluded! The falls are amazing and the trails are very well kept. 100% recommended

Backpacking Site

This was our second visit to Copper Falls. It’d been many years and an upgrade to a camper since but we looked forward to our visit.

We stayed in the north loop this time. We enjoyed a relatively quiet loop with minimal loop traffic. There was plenty of road traffic though as we were right next to the main road to the Falls hiking loop.

Pit toilets on the south end of the loop didn’t have lights in them so headlamps were a must for late day/ night trips. We opted for a few drives to the South Loop for running water and real toilets (sometimes walking a half mile is just too far when ya gotta go! - or when it’s foggy and black out 😁 )

We enjoyed a nice hike to the Observation Tower and then a stroll along the Doughboys Trail. The water wasn’t rushing much but it’s late in the season. The bugs were still annoying on the trail - so do what the sign says and use your bug spray!!

A Stupendous Repeat

Great park! North Country Trail passes thru! Waterfalls and trails that are amazing. Campground has showers that were quirky, some had minimal pressure, but when you’re camping water is water. Staff is friendly. Never had a problem getting a site, even in summer. Small towns around with stores, supplies, etc. Beautiful part of the country. The last time in there was a drought so the river levels and falls were really low, so check before you go.

Crown Jewel of Wisconsin

If your from Wisconsin this sits at the very north of the State.  If your looking for areas to visit while  camping here you may have a little bit of a drive. The park features some of the best waterfalls in the State and the trails surrounding those falls can get you pretty close for some spectacular photos!  The North Country Scenic Hiking runs through the park. This is the longest hiking trail in the county and stretches over 4500 miles. The park does have a beach but if you have a four legged friend with you the pet beach isn't the best as your subject to the boat landing area and isn't very inviting.  You can walk through this park and never get bored of the scenes.  If you like being surrounded by green this is the place! A nice park to get away from any amenities or thoughts of the city!

Waterfalls, Sernity and Camping in the North Country

We decided to spend one night in the north campground here in our sprinter van earlier this month. It was $45 for the night and worth every penny. We had Site 8 which was right across from the bathroom. Very quiet, but most sites were booked! We loved how it was dog friendly in the campground. I thought there was a decent amount of space between sites, and the bugs weren’t bad once we got the fire going and some bug spray. My husband and I took our toddler on the Doughboy’s Trail (parts of a couple trails) and the views were stunning! We cannot wait to go back and explore other parts of the park, especially Loon Lake! 

Already Planning Next Visit

There is many different areas to this park. A nice trail leading you around the falls, with an area for you to cool off in and search for cool rocks. Easy to hike with kids, my girls were 4 &amp; 10, they both enjoyed seeing the waterfalls for the first time. There is also a lake nearby to swim in, which was clear and cool. We also visited Ashland which was about a 30 minute drive north.

Endless nature

Two campgrounds in this state park - South and North but only a total of 56 sites between them, 23 of them with electric. Saw it was filling up even on a weekday in September so made a reservation but still could not get an electric site. Sites were generous in size and most has good separation with lots of trees. Nice hiking on the North Country Scenic Trail to Red Granite Falls and the Doughboys Trail to see the park’s namesake falls plus another and a cascade. We came from camping in Michigan State parks which are much nicer so we were a bit spoiled. My rating would have been higher if there was a bath house with showers in the North campground; the pit toilets were ok but it was too long of a walk to the south campground where there are flush toilets and showers. They were ok but not great (not as nice as Michigan State parks). Lots of hungry mosquitoes as it has not gotten chilly yet so bring bug spray! Very spotty cell service.

Worth the drive

Awesome trails! Could walk to the trails from your sites. Sites were relatively private and very spacious (we fit two tents and two cars in one space along with a canopy). Great beach as well!

Great campground 

Copper Falls was absolutely amazing!! I have lived in WI my whole life, and was so disappointed that 2018 was the first time visiting it! 

  

We stayed in one of the South Campgrounds, which turned out to be really nice. We liked the loop because it meant more privacy with the woods between. And it was great for finding kindling! We also brought our bikes which was convenient because we were able to bike down to the hiking trails rather than driving and parking. 

  

We went to Copper and Brownstone falls the first day and the second day went to Red Granite Falls and it was so stunning! We couldn't believe there were waterfalls like that right in WI! 

  

It was so beautiful and the trails weren't crowded at all. Not sure why, with views like this! Although it is quite a drive from Madison or Milwaukee, it is definitely worth it!

This is Wisconsin?!?

We stayed at the walk-in sites at the South Campground. Our site (52) was just beyond a hill so we couldn’t see a single other camper. There were quite a few mosquitos in mid-July but what else can you expect. The site was spacious and had good tree cover. The trails in the park were well maintained, allowing easy access without taking away from the natural beauty. I only wish we had had more time to explore!

Wonderful trails,  lovely sites

I've been on an RV road trip to states I have not yet visited in the past. Wisconsin is one of them. Copper Falls State Park had it all. Multiple beautiful hiking trails, all by different beautiful waterfalls, Copper Falls, Brownstone Falls on the Bad River. 

It was a really nice campsite in the forest. There is not much to say about it, just like other campgrounds in the area, in the forest. The trail to the falls is an easy walk from the campground.

Please note that you need to make a reservation when you arrive online or via phone. There is no walk-in. You also have to pay the daily State Park fee which is higher if you have an out of state plate; even for camping. If you spend more than 4 nights in State Parks it's worth buying the yearly pass. If you are only traveling through and lucky enough to find an opening, it can be a bit costly. It cost me over $100 for two nights with electric hookup.  

The cell signal was pretty bad down in the campground, it was way better up by the entrance area. There is a lake too with another hiking trail to a different waterfall.

One of my favorite place

Wow, Copper Falls has quickly jumped to my number one state park experience in Wisconsin. I’ve lived in Wisconsin my whole life and did not expect such beauty in this northern part of the state. 

We decided to camp at a walk in site (#49) and this site will absolutely be our preferred site for future bookings at Copper Falls. The walk in sites are obviously more secluded but the size and views at our site were amazing! Additionally, #49 is the first of the walk-in sites and is closest to the small parking lot and bathrooms at the bottom of the hill. The staff also provided carts for you to haul wood or belongings up to your site.

The hiking trails were breathtaking! The views of the waterfalls were amazing and again, unexpected for Wisconsin. The trails themselves were well maintained with fencing/handrails lining the cliffs and rock paths. Super easy hike but there are lots of stairs! 

Needless to say, we will be back!

This is Wisconsin?

The doughboy trail was a pretty easy walk for our younger kids. Lots of great views and places to take a photo. The campground was well spaced out but crowded for the holiday weekend. Electric on the sites, and a dump station is available. Would make a fun weekend stop.

Decent State Park - Beautiful Falls

Another nice Wisconsin state park with plenty of privacy on each site. Room between with lots of growies. No cell signals at all, or at least no ATT &amp; very limited intermittant Verizon. Nice trails and beautiful falls. Plenty of big rigs scattered throughout the campground. Roads are nice, but windy. Another very busy park.

Copper Falls State Park

I can't say enough awesome things about this park. The hiking trails and scenery are top notch, the variety of camping options are extensive and the quality of the sites are excellent. 

If you just want to get away to some beautiful seclusion, this is the place. Even the RV camp site is nicely laid out, not far from the main doughboys hiking trail. In summer, the pads looked good, fairly level and mud free. The sites were heavily wooded and though near the main camp road, it didn't feel like a major throughfare. 

I was actually really blown away by he handicap accessible site which was situated right near the top of brownstone falls. You could fall asleep listening to the water crashing down. 

The trails were well maintained, especially the waterfall trail (Doughboys). Lots of overlook platforms and a selfy station. If getting away from people is your jam, there are lots of trails away from the hustle and bustle of the main trail. Dirt and turf with some lower muddy spots if you take the trails less travelled. 

The swim beach is nice, just a short walk from the parking lot at the ranger station. Plenty of bathroom facilities. The main lot has flush and vault bathrooms, a little nature center (closed for covid), lots of picnic areas and a large spread out feeling. 

I never felt crowded at this park which is saying a lot, given how popular it is. The drive there through the Chequamegon forest is even a joy! 

Best Recreation!

This campground has well spaced sites with electric.   There are two campgrounds, north and south.   The north has water spigots to fill your RV or water bottles and two toilet buildings.   The south has a dump station and water fill.

There is a playground, ballfield, concession stand and lots of picnic areas.   

The sites are tucked in the trees for privacy and all have a picnic table and fire ring.   There is also a lake and kayaks available to rent.  There  is a town less than 5 miles away and you can find groceries and gas.

Beautiful area

Beautiful state park. Good hiking, biking &amp; ski trails throughout. Stayed here in late October- shower house closed for season. This review is for the south campground- no connections. Lots of trees. Spacing between sites are good, providing a little bit of privacy. Good well water. Vault toilets are somewhat clean. Campsites very clean. Paved road through campground; gravel site driveways. Friendly &amp; helpful camp host &amp; park ranger. 2 bars T-Mobile. Would stay here again.

South Campground- Beautiful 

This was our first time camping at Copper Falls, we had previously visited for a day trip, completely taken, we knew we needed to return. The Southern campground doesn’t have any electric and mostly for tent campers, there were still some trailers there. We were in the first loop with woods and some hills behind us, wonderful except for the night there was an intense storm. There was really no place to put our tent that wouldn’t have had some water run off. That’s really the only negative thing. The sites themselves are gorgeously wooded and nice sized. Copper Falls is stunningly beautiful and much of the infrastructure was designed by the CCC. The ranger presence is strong which meant quiet hours were enforced. The facilities were clean and kept that way. They really have something special there and it is clear that they know it with the pride and care used to operate this park. Grab an ice cream sandwich from the concession they are locally made and out of this world! 

For those looking for some magic in the North Woods…

First time up to this park, and camping for the weekend. Campsites are very well sized and spaced out pretty good. There are only vault toilets on the north side, but flushing one’s on the south side. There’s a concession stand towards the north end of the park. They sell snacks, park souvenirs, apparel, and ice cream! This is a very family friendly place. All of the campers were super friendly. 

Relaxing atmosphere 

We stayed in site 55 which is spacious and it was easy to find a level spot. The sites are nicely spaced, the base is reddish sandy dirt that tracks. We had enough sun access on a fully sunny day to top off the Jackery and phones, not the case with partly cloudy. The shower house is huge and kept very clean. The cell signal at our site came and went but it was stronger in many other locations in the park. Recycling was available for cans and bottles only.
Copper Falls is a great place to hike and ideal for riding bikes to access points (which is why we got the bikes!) I was reading Halfway to Heaven and while we weren’t climbing mountains our hike did make me feel a connection with the stories.
Arriving I declared I wanted to a bear and an elk. We didn’t see an elk. The first morning a juvenile black bear came into our site lured by the breakfast that was cooked outside. Fortunately due to the concentration of mosquitoes we were eating inside. Turns out it’s the first one in the campgrounds in 10 years!
We spent a couple of hours in Ashland and enjoyed our trip, loved our lunch at the brewery!

Great North Woods Stay

Beautiful park.  Loved the hiking and waterfalls.  Campsites were big and could hear the stream behind ours.

Loved how peaceful this park was. I stayed at site 40, which backs up to the woods. Site 41 is a little close, but I would still pick this same spot when returning. Bathrooms were clean. 
HOWEVER, beware of the mosquitoes!  They were everywhere in the bathroom making showering intense to be quick. They were so bad that I eventually cut my trip short. Would go back, but later in the year.
