Blue Mound State Park Campground

Blue Mounds State Park is a great campground.  I love the area all the trees.  They have hike in campsites, bike in campsites and regular campsites.  They also have a group area.  If you are in a tent you will have great luck, I would advise in a trailer or Motor Home to inspect you site closely before you say yest to it, or you may be like us and change it 3 times.  Not very many level sites unless you can get up on the tent pad.  At one we thought was fairly level our tires were a good 3 inches off the ground in front.  We finally found one we could live with.  They have limited sites with Electricity so also if you need that look around.

  

I will have to say that the facilites are really nice and very clean in fact I have never seen a bathroom floor that clean on a weekend.  

  

Speaking of weekends it does fill up most weekends so you will need to make reservations unless you want to use the hike in sites.

  

They have a recreation are also in the park that has a beautiful pool.  Picnic areas that are great and towers you can go up to see the Mounds. 

  

WE have spent 2 times there this summer and will be back next summer.

  

If you are there there are a few areas to visit.

Mt Horeb the Troll Capital.  It is a small town about 20 miles if that.  Has a Troll theme and you can see the trolls all over the town.  Some good restaurants and one of the weekends we were there was the Art   Tour it is in the entire area and had some great art studios you could visit.

Cave of the Mounds is another place you have to visit.  This is a great cave during the week they give guided tours on the weekend it is self guided but have docents around explaining everything.  Well worth the money and trip.  This is about 5 miles from the Park.

  

I will say no internet and cell phone was very spotty. It is also one of the darkest areas if you are into the stars, just put something on for Mosquitos. 

  

All in all a good solid 4, only down side was we were in a Motor Home and the not level sites was not the best.

Blue Mounds such a diverse campground

The campground in Blue Mound State Park has well-maintained bathrooms, water faucets nearby, car camping, plus a few hike/bike-in sites. There are good views from a fire tower which sits atop the mound, and a few miles of hiking trails in the parks. Campsites are all pretty large with seclusion from the neighbors.

We got the last site available and am so happy we chose this place. Gorgeous hiking with really unique trails. Awesome mountain hiking options. 

Great hiking/biking & Cool Mounds (kind of like smaller bluffs)

This state park has nice wooded campsites, a beautiful variety of hiking trails and a pool to cool off in the summer months. The views from the picnic area are spectacular, especially in the fall!

Hidden Gem

Campsites, trails and facilities were immaculate. Staff was friendly. drive in and hike in sites available. great for families; trails have info markers to educate hikers on geology and flora of area. Drive in campsites had fire rings and picnic tables, vault toilets available.

Clean and Modern

Easily accessible, very clean and well maintained campground and park.  Many sites to chose from for tents.  Travel trailers have several sites and Friday most of them rolled in.  The trails are well marked and appeal to hikers, mountain biking and winter sports.

Fall Camping

This state park was vary nice . The site was a nice size and had a platform for the tent so we didn't flood . Unfortunately  it poured and was freezing when we went so we couldn't do much hiking. The bathrooms were clean and also has the weather report over the speakers which was nice . They are vary dog friendly although you can't take your dog up the tower ( prob for safety reasons) . In the summer they also have a small water park there, which for family's is awesome .  Definitely will go back 👍

Nice place 

I spent two nights in the campground at Blue Mound State Park. Overall, the park has well-maintained hiking and MTB biking trails, extraordinarily clean and well-kept vault toilets, and ample access to drinking water. Both tent and RV/camper sites are on a typical one-way road pattern with a couple of loops there are plenty of sites with and without electricity. At the time I was there, the camp host sold high-quality hard wood for $5/bundle from a trailer on the honor system, so if you run out in the middle of the night, wood was easy to replenish. One of the park's highlights are lookout towers with views above the treetops, Unfortunately in 2020 both were closed, presumably because it would be difficult to keep a safe distance from others when on the stairs or while at the top. Pity, it'll be a reason to return. Still, there are several observation areas that are maintained well enough to keep the undergrowth from blocking the view of the Wisconsin River Valley nearly 15 miles to the north. This is where the "Blue Mound" name must come from, the hills at that distance did have a bluish cast to them.

If you've read any of my other reviews you know what's next, my list of the best campsites. While I've visited several parks now that have "walk in" sites, with cars parked a minute or two from the campsite, about a dozen sites in Blue Mound State Park take "walk in" to a new level. Cars can drive to a barrier across the road, and the sites are a 10-15 minute walk downhill, The park provides ONE medium-sized cart (250 lb weight limit, 20-minute use limit) that I guess would be in high demand during load in and load out. (NOTE TO SELF, camp Thursday through Monday if going here, or arrive EARLY to get a cart). Most of these sites are quite sunny; 105 is nice and shady and private, 106 slightly shaded 109 and 110 are shaded, very close to one another and would be good for a group camp setup 111 is quite shady. There's water and toilets in the walk-in camp ground. You'd want to sip wood for campfires and cooking, the nearest source is a 15-minute walk uphill and back, and then if using the cart, you have to return it for another round trip.

Back in the family campground where mortals and RVs park, I think the following are the nicest in terms of shade, level, size and privacy.

Beautiful campground with amazing views for Fall. The hike to the caves is about 3 miles with gorgeous landscapes/colors in October. The caves are incredibly well maintained and organized with fun themed tours. Our theme was Halloween so we could purchase “Trick or Treat” bags and collected cool rocks in the caves handed out by employees along the tour. 

Amazing for Fall camping

Very quiet and private sites.  Lots of hiking that you can walk to from campground.  I really liked going into the tower to see the views.

We went later in the year and the ice cream shop was closed.  Not a whole lot to do nearby but that's ok for a quick nature escape!

We also went to the Cave of the Mounds and the kids still talk about that to this day.  They had a lot of fun!  

Very Quiet and Serene

We knew very little about this park going in, but are so glad we’ve discovered it now! All of the hiking trails , but particularly the Flint Rock &amp; Weeping Rock trails, rank up there with the best hikes we’ve ever done. This is the only state park with an actual swimming pool (additional use fee) - and it is a VERY nice, resort style pool.

The campground is unique in that it can take quite awhile to reach your site from the entry point. They are heavily wooded and have nice fire pits and newer toilets throughout, as well as playgrounds.

If you mountain bike (we don’t), this place is a must! There is a special trailhead with air for your tires and everything.

Great Trails, Unique Campground

We visited on July 4th weekend.  This campground is very clean and both shower house and  vault toilets are as well.  Sites are well spaced and each have fire pit/grill and picnic table.  Some are electric and map  shows them as numbered  E sites.  

This campground has a nice playground, hiking trails both short and longer and bike trails.  It is a bit hilly and there are several mountain bike trails.  The pool is very nice and very clean.  There  is a pool section and a splash section.   There are chairs and lounges around both and shade awnings.  The cost is $3 for and adult and $2 for child.  Near by is Blue Mounds Caves.  We did not go, but there is much on the internet about the caves and they are recommended for even young children.   Internet signal at the campgrounds was good.  We have Verizon and could stream movies.  We also have AT &amp;T and could access the net but could not stream.   This is one of the nicer WI campgrounds I have visited.

Great family spot with pool and  splash pad

The sites are very well isolated and shaded, and have a well maintained gravel and packed earth surface. Not great for staking a tent, but doable. Excellent for RVs but some sites are non-electric. There are no other hookups, but there is a dump station. Every site has a fire pit and a picnic table. Many sites have a slight slope. Trail access to both the state park trails and to the Military Ridge Trail which runs nearby.

  

I stayed two nights in a tent and really struggled to find an ok spot on my site to pitch it, between the slope and the occasional roots and rocks. I managed to get stakes in but only at great effort. It looked like some other sites may have been better suited.

  

There is a raccoon problem here. They were definitely snooping through my things on the first night. Heard coyotes during the night in the distance.

  

Overall I'm pretty happy with my stay due to the location in the park, and most of the issues I had would be moot with an RV.

Good RV sites, great site isolation

Gorgeous state park with tons of hiking and biking trails. Views are outstanding ! Bathrooms even the vault ones very clean. Near the cute small town blue mounds and mount Horeb. Be sure to go to cave of the mounds! 

Fall camping at its best

This park had nice trails and was beautiful in fall. Would be great in the summer for little kids with the splash pad. Wish there was some body of water for fishing. 

Good fall camping

We stayed for a night while passing through - ended up picking site #58 w/electric. It was next to the restrooms and water fountain, which was convenient. The campground road and sites were a bit curvy and heavily wooded, there's no way Starlink would work in the area we stayed and ATT was limited. I do think the campground has more to offer though; our stay was a short one because of our trip. Overall the night was quiet and enjoyable
