First Landing State park camping site type:

 EW-20ft: Electric/water site for tents, pop-ups and RVs up to 20 feet long. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire-grill. Bathhouse with hot showers. 20-amp service.

 EW-30ft: Electric/water site for tents, pop-ups, RVs up to 30 feet length. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire-grill. Bathhouse with hot showers. 20, 30 and 50-amp service.

 EW-50ft: Electric/Water site for RVs only 32-50 feet in length. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire-grill. Bathhouse with hot showers. 20, 30 and 50-amp service.

 Std-20ft: No electric/water on this site. Accommodates tents, pop-ups and RVs up to 20 feet in length. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire-grill. Bathhouse with hot showers.

 Sites 44 - 65: Group Campground - No electric/water on these sites. Three-site minimum purchase required. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire-grill. Bathhouse with hot showers. Good for tents. Group camp area - site specific; maximum six people per site. A large shelter, which is available to only group campers, may be rented.

 Each yurt has a large wooden deck, two picnic tables, a pedestal grill and a fire ring with cooking grate. Reservations are required. Parking for two vehicles is allowed for each yurt. Those with additional vehicles must pay the daily parking fee and park in available overflow spaces in the campground.

First Landing State Park Campground

First landing State Park is a 2,888 acre park located on 1.8 miles of the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay.  We camped here in early May in our 34 ft Class A Rv.  If you are familiar with us, you will know we love campgrounds where we park our RV and we can spend the next 10-14 days hiking 🥾, biking  🚴‍♀️ and paddling 🛶.   

🛶You can easily launch your kayak from the campground area but realize you will be trudging through sand for about 200 yards. When the bay was rough,  it was a challenging paddle... and worth the views. 

🎣I paid for an out of state fishing license for 5 days and it was pretty expensive.  I already keep GA and FL yearly fishing licenses...so I may have to rethink my fishing addiction as we travel more outside those states.  There is a boat 🚤ramp near the Narrows beach which is either free  or costs $4 for people staying at the Park.  (We didn’t use it and the wording was contradictory in my research) so check with park on that item if you tow a motorized boat.

🥾20 miles of Trails!!  Lots of trails to hike and mountain/hybrid bike.  We were surprised at the quality and the number of trails available.  We were never bored.  Here is a link to the hikes

🚴It  was also fun to road bike the 10 miles from the state park to the Virginia Beach Boardwalk but we advise you take cautions on the first 2 miles outside the park.  We were NOT there  “in season” but during certain times of year there is a trolley 🚃 that goes to the boardwalk, gift shop and lots of park activities  during the  season.

🚍⛺️This campground delivered! The 184 Campsites with variations of 20/30/50amp electric and water (some sites may be seasonal March-December) sites are mostly hard sand/grass based and not all are level.  Due to foilage/branches —&gt;many of the larger sites near the waterfront are narrowed (Our camping neighbor had branch clippers he let us borrow) Also, note is that there is a $5 per pet per night additional fee at the campsite

🏡they have lots of cabins.  pets are allowed for a $10 fee per pet &amp; per night in the 20 cabins but not in the 4 available yurts.  (I know that seems high but many parks in other states do not allow pets at all in their cabins)

Be active near Virginia Beach!

I used to take my dog fishing with me. The waterside views are incredibly, and the fishing was fun. 
It's just down the road from va beach, but waaay less crowded. 

Great fishing, and dog trails! 

This is a beautiful park that is very close to the water. As with other Virginia State Parks, the campground is very clean and the facilities are well-maintained. There are lots of trails to walk and bike on and are great for dogs.

We live on the other side of Virginia, but have enjoyed returning to First Landing whenever we get the chance. We love the fact that we can visit the beach AND camp.

Campsites are within walking distance to the ocean. VA Beach boardwalk is a short drive away. Beach is dog friendly, obviously pick up after your dogs. Park Rangers patrol and help you feel secure without being overbearing. Visitors Center offers lots of info about things to do. Camp store offers firewood and ice as well as odds and ends you might have forgotten. They also have some really nice bathhouses although not all of them have been renovated. 

Bring flip flops for the shower and sandals/walking shoes. Bring bug spray. 

A favorite state park in Va!

Hot. Came in mid August. But so many trees blocked all wind from ocean. If you do not book early could be stuck in one of the many sites sitting directly next to swampy waters. Or looking at fence for military base undergoing construction. Be prepared for bugels and national anthem every morning at 0 800 hours. The beating blades of helicopters at 11pm adds a nice ambiance with the million frogs as well when in deep slumber. I give it 2 stars as the nature center is very nice and has great shows for kiddos. Showers and bathrooms very clean and water is hot. Beach area very nice and peaceful but could be long hike if you get outer site. Have something to haul your gear and kids. Overall, if you are lucky to get one of the very few good sites available would look elsewhere. Maybe off season and when military base moves.....

Ground Zero

We arrived here on a wim. We had heard great things about this campground. It's being kind of secluded but still on Virginia Beach. We heard this part of Virginia Beach was beautiful and not over crowded. So we gave it a shot.

It's a beautiful camp ground with tent and RV sites. Some of the sites sit perfectly nestled in trees protected by the elements while others are directly along swampy bug infested areas. We arrived later and our choice on sites just wasn't looking to good. We found what we thought would be a great site and all and all it was but when the sun went down the bugs came out. Excellent facilities here. Very very clean bathrooms and sites. There hiking, biking, swimming and fishing here. Long story short get here early and get yourself a good spot preferably not by the swamp.

Swampy site, pretty campground

FLSP is a real Gem in the midst of a very busy Virginia Beach. The campsites range from tenting with no hookups to 20, 30, and 50 foot sites with water and electric. There are also about 20 cabins on the Trail side. The only sewer hookups are for the three Camp Host sites located throughout the Park. There are nice clean showers located around the campground. There are beaches with boardwalk access over preserved dunes. There are no lifeguards. Across the road from the campground are fabulous hiking trails, a bike trail, and another beach area on a tidal lake. The variety of activities within the Park, including Ranger led activities, along with easy access to the Virginia Beach boardwalk via the local bus system, biking, or personal vehicle, make this State Park the only place we stay in VaBeach. We love this Park so much we have volunteered as Camp Hosts for eleven years❤️

First Landing is a great, family friendly campground for all to enjoy. Access to the beach is a plus, the park rangerd do their job well, and many great amenities are available. Highly recommend!

Great location for a weekend getaway

This park is a dog friendly, peaceful gem where you can choose to hike just in the woods or even hike to the beach. The camp grounds are nice and kept well. Campers are typically laid back and fun. Fantastic park and one of our favorite places to go for some quality family time.

First Landing is a gem. 

This camp ground was exceptionally clean and the campsites varies from extremely small to fairly large. With our rooftop tent, we had to get a site that would facilitate us parking the truck, but the site we were given wasn’t ideal. The site we had (134) did not allow us to back the truck into the camp site, just in a narrow driveway close to the road. Since all of the other sites were taken, we made due. This site would have been perfect for a large family with multiple tents.

After dark, the place really filled up - I imagine most people had been at the beach all day. There were vehicles going past our site until approximately midnight, and people making noise until about 1am.

The restroom facility was within walking distance and was moderately clean (in comparison to a few of the other camp grounds I’ve experienced).

All in all, I enjoyed my stay and will definitely be back; however, I may call to make a reservation to describe my rig’s setup in lieu of reserving online.

Crowded but Cool

If you’re looking for a beautiful place with magical trees to camp amongst, this is definitely your place. My negative review would be the bathrooms/showers. They are very disgusting and old so... I guess your camping and it shouldn’t matter? I did however love the beach... seemed so private because hardly a soul was on it and the waves are nice and quiet here. This was my second time visiting 😁

This is a wonderful place to get away - right near the beach. You can have a fire pit as well as stop in the country store for anything you might need while you’re there. The trails are great for hiking or going for a run.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!

I wanted to get as close to the action as I could and this place offered a beach area that I thought would suffice, however it wasn't quite as exciting as I was hoping for so I did eventually buckle and take the shuttle to the more commercial beach, which was much better and much more of what I was expecting. This place is quiet in comparison but I wanted the beach feel of boardwalks and sun visors…lol

Campsites were ok. $21 for standard or $41 for water and electric in addition to a $5 per car entry fee I had to pay as a non Virginia resident. Things just continued to add up as I had to pay for the shuttle, and while it was reasonable you could tell this spot was in a commercial honey pot of money.

I was expecting from description my site to be on a sandy beach but they were not they were on dirt yes, but it was hard packed. I felt more forest than beach at the campsite and while it was nice and shaded it also lacked the beach appeal I was searching for.

They did have rentals of water crafts like canoes and other things at the marina, un-patroled beaches for swimming and a lot of hiking trails. With a mile and a half of beach, like I said it was nice.

TIPS:

*   Take the WAVE bus, it does turn out to be less expensive than having to park at the beach itself with fare only about $4 per day. Parking down on the boardwalk area can be $20 per lot or $2 per hour at the meter with a 3 hour max.
*   Opt for a space in one of the cabins if you are traveling with a family. They pretty much include everything you could need and leave the outdoor heat of summer outdoors, making for a much more comfortable stay during muggy months.

Tent Camping Was SubPar

Thick foliage provides privacy at this campsite. Parking is on sandy soil. Tall sand dunes provide nearby access to the beach.  Air Force jets fly over loudly until 10pm. After that it is a quiet natural setting for the night. 

Beautiful Sand Dune RV Camping

We stayed here 3 nights during spring break (March). There is privacy and quiet beachside camping all over with tons of activities to see and do. We went to Nauticus, toured the Norfolk Naval base, visited Jamestown, Williamsburg, Yorktown, hiked trails across from the campground and visited the lighthouse Cape Henry. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. I didn’t use the bathhouses but I liked that they were nearby and provided recycling bins. The staff were friendly and helpful. I would return in warmer months and highly recommend our site near the Godspeed boardwalk, 188.

Great beachside camping!

Beautiful park right next to the ocean. Dogs loved it and no one complained about dogs being on the beach. Will definitely be returning. Bathrooms were not the worst but definitely not the best .

Wonderful 

We’ve been camping for several years and just discovered first Landing this year; it’s quickly become one of our favorites. We’ve stayed at sites 167 and 168 (pictured). The interior sites are shaded and have huge, sprawling trees that are great for energetic kids to climb, and hang hammocks. They also provide nice separation between sites for a more private experience. The sites along the beach have little to no shade; the sites at the bottom of the loop (along Shore Drive) are very close to the road. There is a fence separating the road from the park, but it is a main road and you will be able to hear traffic all night.
The beach is clean and big and the water is calm and shallow (3’-4’) very far out. It is a long walk across the boardwalk so if you’re bringing chairs/canopy/floats/toys you’ll want to have a beach wagon/buggy as well.
The bathrooms/showers are clean and some of them have a parking space or two. The campground is big so you may find yourself driving more than you’d like if you don’t bring bikes.
The rest of the park (and cabins) are across the main road from the campground. The trail from the parking lot to the visitor center is paved and an easy walk/bike ride through cypress trees/swamp. If it hasn’t rained in awhile and the cypress mold is undisturbed on the water you’ll be able to see the rainbow sheen on the water. At the end of the trail next to the visitor center parking lot is an Indian grave; in 1997, 64 Chesapeake Indians received a ceremonial reburial by the Nansemond tribe.
 
 

A new favorite 

Our campsite looked super small at first, but then we moved the picnic table a bit to the side, and it was big enough for my 10 person tent. (Site 54)

Other than that, the water supply was right there on our site, and we had a lot of people come over to use it, but it was super convenient or us anyway. We left our tent alone ALL the time and nothing at all went wrong! I would definitely go here again, and plan on it next year for sure!

Great Weekend!

This is an excellent campground with large tent sites that you feel almost as if your the only one camping even when the campground is full. There are multiple points of entry to a beautiful well cared for beach. The park offers a trolley ride for 4.50 a day to the main beach front in Virginia Beach. Camp store is well stocked and is run by an outstanding staff. FT Story is very close so you will hear the Star Spangled Banner at 8am every morning and occasionally you will here helicopters doing night exercises.

Updated after a second trip (August 2020)
This campground is generally really lovely, lots of trees, good Chesapeake beach access, but not very well designed for tent camping. Some of the sites are as I observed on our first trip, but all are not created equal. A lot of them are small and close to the camp road and run right into each other (no privacy) and lack sufficient flat space to pitch two tents. So many of the camper/RV sites have lots of flat private space behind where the RV would be parked, which would be great for pitching tents.
The map is not to scale; sites 130, 132, and 133 back on to site 84, for example.
Site 83 backs on to site 93, which in turn is open to 94. These three would be nice for a large group camping together.
The sites on the east side of the campground back right on to the boundary fence of the neighboring military base (barbed wire fence).
Restroom capacity (in COVID times) is supposedly limited to the safe number of 10, but 10 would be way too many. Four stalls and three sinks do not work out to 360+ square feet of space.

Initial review (August 2019)
The tent sites at this campground were gorgeous. Deep and private-feeling and well shaded. But so close to the road. 
I saw the map that clearly indicates Shore Drive running alongside the campground and I thought, “It can’t be that close!” But it is. Four lanes of 55mph traffic running within 25 yards of all the tent sites on the south side of the campground. 

We had such a fun time, despite the noise and lack of sleep, that we will almost certainly go back, but will definitely book one of the interior loop sites or maybe even one of the 20’ camper sites instead.
Additional points: multiple daily nature programs for all ages in summer, really helpful staff, but the “camp store” doesn’t sell many camp supplies or groceries except ice and firewood.

Beautiful but noisy (updated)

No better park for a girl’s trip! We had SO MUCH room to ourselves and so much privacy. The private boardwalk to the beach and the beach itself was so quiet and isolated. Perfect for families, groups, or solo hikers alone. One of my girlfriends is a runner and she found the campground very relaxing to run a few miles through. Always a great time at FL!

P.S. bring bug spray!!!

Girls trip! 

We had a really nice time!! Our site was small for five people and two dogs (site 87) but it worked just fine! EXCEPT for the number of mosquitoes this time of year. Omg I’ve been bit SO many times. Take your itch cream if going in the swamp season of August lol. 

Only complaint: I’ve never camped on a holiday weekend before, and while I did anticipate a lot of people and families utilizing the facilities, I wish the staff had staffed accordingly. All three times I went to the restroom in the bathhouse, my stall had no toilet paper on either spool. The showers were filthy with blobs of hair and baby wipes and foul smells, and the garage cans were overflowing with rancid trashbags. The recycling bin was full of garbage, due to the dumpster being full. People were constantly driving the wrong way on one-way streets, not staying on the paths. Ideally there should have been more patrolling and more mindfulness towards the influx of waste/need for cleanings and restocking of common areas. But I get it; it was BUSY. P.S. the bathhouse venting are brutal - get a site away from those! While it’s convenient, when there are that many people, it’s rough. 

I was so happy to see so many people utilizing our state parks! So many families (LARGE groups, too) were definitely taking advantage of the swimming and large sites. So wonderful to see. 

We also took the short drive into VA Beach and walked the boardwalk. We hopped on at the Neptune Statue and walked a few blocks, heard some live music, got ice cream. 

FL is a lovely state park and has a cool location. We will definitely be back, just not on such a busy weekend and during such mosquito-awful weather ☀️

LOCAL TIPS:

Dockside Seafood and Bubba’s Seafood are awesome. I’ve gotten fresh fish from both. Most recently we got a pound of shrimp and a pound of ... I want to say mahi ... but anyway, both from Bubba’s and very fresh. We cooked it all at the campsite with seasonal veggies and rice ✌🏼

If you like jalapeño poppers, you HAVE to go to Froggie’s while you’re in the area. Went with a large group and got to try many things, all were really good! 


Labor Day Weekend🏕

First Landing was great. There are several campsites that range from basic to rv. They even have yurts and cabins to stay in. Easy access to bathrooms, fresh water, and the boardwalk down to the Chesapeake bay. There are so many options for water activities, but since I went during October and it rained, I stuck to hiking the trails and walking the beach. The staff was very accommodating and knowledgeable. The campsite was great too even if a bit close to the main road.

State park within the city with easy access to the bay. 

First Landing State Park is a great place, especially if you want beach access!  We also have a large tipi tent (15’x15’), so we need a larger than normal space...and they have it!  It’s also very nice to see pictures of the camping spots before you pick, ensuring that we get a spot that meets our desires.

We had a wonderful time!

The reservation system for this campground was clunky. If you are familiar with the park and the sites, it might be fine but we were not, so we reserved a non-specific site. This was a mistake as most of these sites (and the only ones left when we arrived) backed right up against a busy road! We were able to switch to a site-specific site for a nominal upcharge. Our site was sandy (close to the beach so not a surprise) but not level, however, it was generous in size and fairly private. Sites vary significantly in size and quality so once again if you are not familiar with the campground, you will be at a disadvantage. 

  

The bathrooms were mostly clean but dated. Hot water was spotty. Our biggest complaint is that our water hookup (site 174) was rusted and basically broken. Husband “MacGyvered” it to make it work but it needed maintenance (I did let the park know of this in their feedback form so hopefully it is no longer an issue). 

  

We were there at the end of March so bugs were not an issue, although I have read that at other times of the year, they are! 

  

There are multiple access points to the beach. It is nice for walking but there was a fair amount of litter. It is next to an active military base (Fort Story) but other than restricted access on the beach if you head east, this did not bother/affect us. It is close to Cape Henry Lighthouses (the old and new ones) at Fort Story (you need to surrender your license and your vehicle is subject to search in order to enter the grounds), but it was worth going.

Good beach walking

It is super accessible, has a great beach, snack shop/store and facilities.  We live IN Virginia Beach but still crash here every so often just to get outside for the night. 
Its a great spot for a family w/ kids. 
They can ride their bikes around safely.

Simple and Sweet

We were in site 156 which was right near a boardwalk and a bathhouse. I went right after Virginia State Parks opened up again after the lockdown. It was on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. We arrived around 4:30 ish but the office was closed. We were told to go to the kiosk for late self-checkin. Everything was organized and ready.

Our site was good but be warned if you go to the southern side of the park near the beach that you will be very close to a US military base called Fort Story. You may hear occasional machine guns and artillery. You will also hear reveille in the morning. It was not terribly bad. 

As we went there when not many people were venturing out, I personally found that this campground was quite private and it was simple to social distance. I saw 2 nearby campers but did not see a soul at their campsite or on the beach, albeit I was only there for 1 day and there was rain that evening. 

I’d like to go back to this campground but further on the beach to the north. The sites and beach were clean. The park personnel were polite and not annoying.

Perhaps next summer for a longer visit.

Perfect for the area 

Great place. Very close to Virginia Beach city limits, but you would never know it. Grounds are all throughout dunes with decent distance from other campers. The beach is a 3 minute walk from most sites. 

Beach fun

This family friendly state park and campsite is nestled between the southern shore of the Chesapeake Bay and Shore Drive. Campsites accommodate a range of options from yurts, tents, and RVs. You’ll find locals coming here during the day to access the long sandy Bay side beach, which has gentle waves (perfect for little kids), paddle boarding, etc. 

Campers park for free. Sites come in a wide range of shapes, shade, etc.  If you are coming to tent camp, you want to choose sites as close to the Bay as possible.  Shore Drive runs literally along the south side of this campsite. The road is very active all day and night as a military base is next door to the park. 

There are no waterfront sites, but you won’t walk far from your site to the beach or bath houses.  We had a two minute walk to the beach from site #14 and a 90-second walk to the bath house- just to give you perspective.

The campsite map on their site isn’t drawn to scale, so keep that in mind. There are tons of hiking/biking trails within the park, plenty of beach access, and a quick 15 minute drive to the Virginia Beach beaches. The Park Store wasn’t open during our stay but ice and firewood can be purchased in the store or office under normal circumstances. 

Overall this is a fantastic park to camp in with lots of local options for stores, food, attractions, etc. This is not a quiet or isolated campground, so if you’re looking for that bring your earplugs :)

Fantastic Family Camping Site

One of my favorites. Nice and close to beach, restaurants (hot tuna) (shore break).   7 eleven close by for ice and late night ice cream. Negatives, they need electric and ac in the yurts. Overall good.

Great beach access

Stayed a few days in July.  It was warm and were caught in a good thunderstorm our first night which dropped several inches of much needed rain.  Campground is coastal so the water took a bit to drain away.  Some campsites seems to have water concerns but we were high and dry.  Just like camping anywhere, keep your tent on the high ground.  Staff was very friendly and the facilities had increased cleaning due to the COVID and Phase III in VA.  Our site was a 30' EW as we brought our pop up camper and were very pleased.  We were secluded from the other sites by trees and had plenty of shade.  Camp store was well stocked.  Access to the beach was great.  Easy walk from the campsite to one of three boardwalk style access bridges which had rise showers for when you return.  Heard great things from others about the hiking trails.  We will return to check those out.

Awesome park - great location!

Really liked the site spots here. Most are pretty big, set back from where you pull your car in. We have a rooftop tent so just be mindful that some parking spots are at a heavy slant and you cannot cross the barricade to drive in further. Therefore, make sure you look at the picture of the exact spot you reserve ahead of time, which is also a great feature on the site.

We were very pleased with our camping experience at First Landing State Park.  The campground is well maintained and has a knowledgable and friendly staff.

  

The drive thru campsite we chose was clean, level, and came equipped with a fantastic fire ring and picnic table.  There was lots of room on the site, and we could have set up a couple of tents toward the back if needed.

  

Access to the beach and surrounding hiking/biking trails was the real strength of this location!  It is certainly not wilderness camping, but with water and electric hook ups, we set up a successful basecamp for exploring the region.

  

The weather was great for late October, and the crowds were minimal.  We will likely make this an annual trip.

Outstanding campground with easy access to the beach!

Fantastic campground. Very basic, yet had a great appeal. It was minutes to walk to the bay, and only minutes to drive to Virginia Beach center. Each site was open, yet surrounded by trees, so you still felt somewhat secluded. It was so relaxing to sit in a tube and float on the bay. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the facilities were very clean. Be forewarned, it is directly next to the army base. We have stayed here twice. When we stayed to the left, closer to the camp store, we heard nothing. It was very quiet. Our 2nd trip, we stayed to the right. We could throw a stick and hit the government fences. Every night, we heard aerial training, saw fighter planes flying overhead, even had a helicopter nearly put out our fire. One night, we woke up at 2am to m80s going off in our ears. It is all training and there was no danger at all, but it was quite noisy for my comfort. Was pretty cool to hear the star spangled banner play every morning at 9am. It was definitely an experience I will never forget! I will definitely be visiting again, but choosing to stay closer to the store next time!

Went in October 2020. We stayed in a small but nice and cozy site #170 (had water and 30A electric). This place is perfect to unwind and not be too far from civilization. We took the kiddos to the beach and just sat back and relaxed. We were able to maintain a safe distance since the camper access to the beach is separate. Overall loved it and would definitely recommend to all.

Can’t Wait To Go Back 

Nice area on the beach.  Only issue is that you can hear the traffic passing on the main road...
Has ability to select your spot, which is nice because you can see how crowded and opt for a far off location.
Tent sites are large &amp; comfy.  
Access to plenty of water, showers, beach and shorter hikes.  Nice place to chill for a bit

Close but Apart

You’re sleeping on sand so comfort score is already 5 stars! Not to mention you’re right next to the First Landing State Park beach! The campground and beach is on the corner of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean right above Virginia Beach. 

We stayed at site 174 which is one of the sites closest to the beach but on the other side of the road. It was only me and my daughter for this trip but there were man made spaces for up to 3 large person tents! 

Our site did not have any good placement for a hammock but many other sites do have great trees for hammocks or slack lines! 

Our spot also had water and electric hookup. 

Overall great park, great campground, and great experience! 

Great Location! 

Stayed here for a few nights.  The sites vary widely in size and access so make sure you know where you are staying. We had great dune side site right next to a boardwalk to get out to the beach. Be careful of the tent sites, while many were under the cool and unique trees, others were partially flooded due to rain and time of year.  The trail system across the road that is also part of the park is extensive and offers lots to do.  Be mindful that if your site is not on the road that runs along the beach side you will likely have a good amount of road noise.  You want to be picky about your site.

Booked an electric/water hookup site for me and my friend, who has a camper- the site was smallish and close to other sites but still felt secluded. The beach was lovely- bit of a walk to the beach but worth it. Lots of trails if a break from the beach is needed. Bathhouse near to us was okay- could you use a revamp, but showers are private- except for the tree frog who showered with me one day. I hope to make it back to this campground!

I know most people love this park but I’m not a beach sand mosquito loving person. Site was kinda small and not level. 

It’s ok

Our family stayed at site 99 which is close to the bathhouse and camp host.  It is also on one of the small roads that leads to a boardwalk to the beach.  Thete are 4 boardwalks to the beach over the dunes so keep that in mind when booking your site.  This is a pretty big campground and thereare many trees which are dense and it keeps a lot of the campsites private even though they may be close to each other.  Some areas are more open with less privacy.  The bathhouses are clean but not climate controlled in the summer so be ready for heat and humidity after showering.  The staff, camp hosts, and rangers were allvery helpful.  The campground is situated on the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach.  We loved the beach here because we have six small grandkids and they could play in thewater without the worry of large waves and heavy tides.  The park also has many awesome trails that you can walk or bike.  Also, dogs are totally allowed on the beach as long as they are on a leash during any time of the day or night.  There are no lifeguards on duty.   There are many tent sites and e/w hook up sites.  It definitely seemed to be tent heavy while we were there this time.  We loved our stay here and have already booked a time to go back in April.  

Camping on the Chesapeake Bay

This campground is awesome for beach camping. Beautiful sunsets on the bay. You can even see rocket launches from Wallops Island from the beach! The majority of the sites are a short walk from the beach. Beautiful live oaks in all the campsites. We've stayed in a few different sites and the noise from Shore Drive can sometimes be loud, so try to get a site away from the road. Great amenities and camp store here. Bathrooms could definitely use an update but are functional. We like to come on the off-season when the mosquitos aren't bad and it's less busy. Lots of easy hikes - and great geocaching!

Awesome camping at the beach

We were so satisfied with our stay here. Everything was perfect: a lot of privacy on a site, clean and nice bathrooms, beach access, friendly staff.

Amazing stay near the beach! 

Very large campground sits on the bay.  Gorgeous trees to hang hammocks from.  The ocean is for wading… shallow waters a good 500 feet out no waves.

This Campground is beautiful! The sound of the ocean from our site was amazing! We were up against the dunes and had a very private, gorgeous secluded site. Fire and Ice can be purchased on site. Almost all sites we saw offere unique space.

This campground is an awesome place to camp!  There is a great beach, excellent hiking trails, hook ups on good, flat sites, and a host of other great amenities!

  

The boat launch is awesome with separate spots for motor boats and kayaks.

  

We had cell service (not necessarily a good thing) and easy access to restaurants along the Virginia Beach Boardwalk.

  

Amazingly enough, there was still a variety of wildlife hanging out (birds, deer, rodents, etc.)

First Landing may be Virginia's best state park!

I love this park. It’s even better in the fall! 🍂 lots of family-friendly activities around Halloween!

**Camp site (Tent + Teardrop camping)**

*   We stayed at two different camp sites, a tent only site and a RV site. First stay at the tent only site was great. It was well closed off from the other sites so nice and quiet. Really felt like camping in pure nature. (5 star)  
    
*   If you are planning to stay at the RV site (Kendall loop), I would recommend staying away from the sites that are right next to the Shore Drive. You'll see/hear the cars driving by all night long. Those sites are #12,13,17,20,23,25,27,29. Also, site #5 is right in front of the bathhouse. We stayed at #12 and the smell was awful there. There are poison ivy near the fence so watch out. (3 star)

Bathrooms weren't maintained well. 2 of 3 sinks were clogged. There is a cleaning station and showers next to the Kendall bathhouse.

This campground has great access to the beach, and about 7 miles away from the boardwalk.

First experience was a charm but...

The campground is well kept. There are a lot of camp sites but there is also privacy. We would go back and have already recommended it to a few people. 

Peaceful, well kept, walkable distance to the beach

I loved the beach which was calm and allowed the kids and dogs to play safely. I loved the hiking trails and the paved areas for biking. I did remove a star because of them not having sewer hookups but then again im a new camper and all i have visited is sites with sewer hookups. There is a nice dumping station though. And also there was no Wi-Fi which i was also used to. I do have Verizon and i would occasionally get 2 bars which allowed me to stream movies for the kids. My daughter has T-mobile only had 1 bar. But you can get more bars at the beachside.

Great experience!

Our site (99) ended up being accidentally pull through (I don’t think it was intended to be) but wasn’t level. It seems like it was meant to be a tent site as it had a level tent pad in the back. We were able to get everything on it and were right across from the bath house and a short walk from the beach. 

Only major downside was that there were some loud drunks across from us, right next to the host, and they were obnoxious and foul mouthed late into the night. However it was Memorial Day weekend so I half expected it 😔

Good state park 

We traveled all the way from NY to camp here. What’s better than camping in a vacation destination on the ocean ?
It was nice being able to walk down to the beach whenever we wanted. We could drive to town and visit the attractions.

Wonderful campground with close access to the beach.  RV friendly but you have to book in advance, no full hookups.  My site just fits a 20 footer.

Camping at the beach among beautiful old trees! The beach is so clean. Lots of history. Trails are amazing!

Stayed by site 5. I do not recommend anyone ever do this! You’re right be the shower/toilet. We don’t typically mind, and we figured November was cool enough it wouldn’t smell. Wrong. Every slight breeze from the South greets you with the whiff of a septic tank. Just don’t do it. Walk the extra distance to the boardwalk and save yourselves. It’s also not fun having random kids run through your site to cut the corner from the West. 

At night, you’ll hear tons of sirens. The city isn’t too far away, and we’re prettt sure there must be a major hospital out there. Sirens wailing a LOT.

That said, the beach is really nice, and the campsites are actually taken pretty good care of. Definitely recommend coming here. It’s just going to be city noise and poo (if you stay at site 5).

Nice beach - good campground - LOUD

Awesome coastal campground.  Total diamond in the rough here.  Very few bad sites- almost every one I saw was under a canopy of live oaks and pines.  Ours was great- very large and private due to mounds and trees.  Great live oaks for kids to climb on!  The beach is beautiful and very kid friendly- a short walk from any campsite.   Huge network of trails and close proximity to Virginia Beach and anything you might need.  Definitely could spend weeks here and be happy.  Only detractor was naval jets that kinda sounded like thunder from nearby base.  Not a big issue.  I would definitely book as close to the dunes/bay as possible with your site so that you can't hear road noise from route 60.  Ours was perfect.  Very cool campground.

Went for Labor Day weekend. Great campsite with good shade. Beach was nice and bay water was good temperature. Plus while Virginia Beach had red flag conditions, we could still swim. Had my crocs stolen at the beach though. Bathrooms next to us were completely renovated and are very nice.

Great campground with nicely shaded sites. If you want quiet and peaceful stick to the spots on the beach side.
