About

State Park

At the intersection of the Suwannee and Withlacoochee rivers, patches of rain lilies spring up on earthen mounds built to defend against Union Navy gunboats. Sunwannee River Campground is alive with history. Visitors can see remnants of a nineteenth-century steamship and two ghost towns that have been reclaimed by the sandhill wilderness, which is home to diverse and imperiled native species. On foot or by canoe, experiencing the park’s historical significance is its own timeless reward.

Located near the Suwannee River, the campground offers 30 oak-shaded sites with electricity, water, sewer, picnic table and fire ring. Three campsites are ADA accessible. The campground offers an ADA accessible restroom with showers. A dump station is also available.

Pets are welcome but must be kept on a 6-foot leash controlled by the pet's owner. Maximum RV length = 45 feet.

Nice Small Campground

PROS

Site 14- shady; 100% sand; moveable small wooden picnic table and metal fire ring with cooking grate; small clothes line permanently erected

Fairly new bathhouse which was very clean

Quiet except for Interstate 10, US90 and occasional train

Park security gate closes at sunset and requires code to enter

Campground Drive thrus by sheriff and park personnel

Very friendly and helpful volunteers

Lots and lots of squirrels.

Didn’t see any other wild life.

CONS

Paid transaction fee for making my own online reservation

Camping in cars permitted in FHU campsites

No privacy from other sites or campground roadway

No Park WIFI

1 bar TMOBILE

Don’t Miss

Live Oak is the next eastbound Interstate 10 exit, so 7 miles, which has Walmart with Murphy fuel, Lowe’s, Winn-Dixie and Publix

Watch local law enforcement speed surveillance on US90. Goes from 60 mph to 45 mph at the Interstate junction!

Robbie’s Cafe for some reasonably priced home cooking

O’Neal County Buffet in Madison for bodacious fried chicken

Quiet camping in the "real" Florida

General: 30-site campground, all with full hookups (water, electric - 30 and 50 amp - and sewer). Two of the sites are handicap accessible with concrete driveways; the others are gravel. There are also cabins which looked very nice. We received a call from the ranger since the ranger station would close before our arrival letting us know the gate code (although it turned out the gate was still open), and where to pick up our hang tag and park information.

Site Quality: All sites appeared to be level. Not much privacy/separation between sites and with the exception of one of the handicapped sites, it was full when we were there on a weekday at the end of October. A picnic table and fire grate complete the site.

Bathhouse: Very clean. Didn’t use the shower so cannot comment on them but they looked very clean.

Activities/Amenities: Several hiking trails, most of them short in length but there was one 12.5-mile trail. The trails are all well-marked. There is also a boat ramp. Nice modern washer and dryer for a very reasonable cost of $1.50 each

This was just an overnight stopover for us but we did walk partway on Lime Sink Run, Balanced Rock, and Suwanee River Trails. It looks like they are making improvements to the park, including a wooden boardwalk and a new bridge on the Suwanee River Trail. If there was more separation/privacy between sites, would have given this four stars.

Best State Park Camping

We‘ve been to about 10 state parks in Florida and we loved this one the most. It‘s very well maintained and super clean and the bathhouse looks new. The trails are nice. Just really good vibes!
