Overview

Deer Creek Campground is located in California Sierra National Forest. The campground is tucked under dense fir and pines along the shore of Huntington Lake and offers scenic lake views, especially during the annual sailboat regatta. Boats can be moored near some of the camp sites. There are two loops to this campground: one is more heavily forested with more sites along the lake, and the other has more open and sunny sites with closer access to the resort community of Lakeshore. All sites have a view of Huntington Lake.

Recreation

There are many hiking trails in the area, including Rancheria Falls, Indian Pools and Black Point. Hikers and horseback riders can access the 12-mile Kaiser Loop Trail, which connects to a network of trails within the Kaiser Wilderness. Huntington Lake offers many activities, including swimming, sailing, boating, non-motorized boating, fishing and water skiing. Additionally, California Land Management sponsors a variety of interpretive programs and nature walks throughout the summer at several locations in the Huntington Lake area.

Facilities

Each site has a paved parking spur, table, fire ring, and grill. A pay phone, drinking water, flush toilets and accessible flush toilets are provided.

Natural Features

The Sierra National Forest, located on the western slope of the central Sierra Nevada, is known for its spectacular mountain scenery and abundant natural resources. The terrain includes rolling, oak-covered foothills, heavily forested middle elevation slopes and the starkly beautiful alpine landscape of the High Sierra.

Deer Creek Camping

We stayed in site 15 and it was very nice. Large site with plenty of room for trailer and two big tents. Very short walk down to Huntington Lake and was ideal for swimming with the kids.

Exceptional lakeshore camping!

Deer creek campground sits on the edge of Huntington Lake. Many of the sites have views of the lake or are right on the lake. Although a lot of trees have been cut down due to the beetle issue in the last few years most sites still have plenty of shade or you will sacrifice the shade because you get an unobstructed view of the beautiful lake.

Huntington Lake is about an hour past shaver Lake which is about an hour from Fresno. Huntington is typically 8 to 10° cooler than shaver Lake. Temps in the summer are in the 70s at Huntington. There is a lot to do in the area Including easy hikes to waterfalls and magnificent vistas like at mushroom rock. We enjoyed driving up Kaiser Pass to jack ass meadow and Florence lake. Also, Indian pools is a great way to spend a few hours in beautiful scenery.

If you can’t get a camping spot at Huntington you can also camp at China Peak ski resort. It’s not fancy camping but it’s cheap and it will do if it’s the only way for you to enjoy this beautiful place.

Larger campsite

Each area has a picnic table, fire pit, and is very clean upon arrival. There are lots of cut down wood in the area. If you take a short drive around you can easily gather some up for your fire. They have running water in the bathrooms so that’s a plus. The staff is super friendly and the lake is a lot less traffic than shaver.
