About

State Park

Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area is a beautiful oak woodland park nestled along the Sacramento River between Chico and Red Bluff. Mount Shasta, Mount Lassen, and the Trinity Alps loom in the distance.

A boat launch ramp located across the road in the county park makes for easy access to the river for those who enjoy water sports. A broad sand and gravel beach provides the opportunity to enjoy the sun and enjoy the Sacramento River.

Another special feature of Woodson Bridge is the preserve. This dense native riparian forest is a winter home to the Bald Eagle and a summer nest site for the Yellow Billed Cuckoo. This jungle like grove displays some of the last remaining riparian habitat to be found in California.

Over a hundred plant species have been identified throughout the park; the most prominent is the large valley oak. The California black walnut, Oregon ash, black cottonwood, sycamore, and willow are also plentiful. Beneath the oaks and cottonwoods along the river is a profusion of elderberry, wild grape, and wildflowers in season.

Lovely oaks, no river access

Reservations.gov implied campground was full, we took a chance for the night and MANY SPOTS WERE AVAILABLE! But river access has been eroded in this last year so access is down the way at the county park (under the busy roadway, meh). But beautiful oaks, and a fine spot for the night. Friendly staff and campground hosts

Would have been fine but...

We didn’t want to chance it! We tried but were unable to make same-day online reservations and no one answered the phone at 4 pm. It would have been a two-hour drive to get to this place from where we were but with all the wildfires in recent years in this part of California, many campgrounds have closed. The most recent review on The Dyrt was a year ago and we could not find any information on the web regarding the state of this campground. After securing alternate arrangements, we visited to see what it looked like. The grass was already dry (but had recently been mowed), and the bathroom/shower was a little dated, but otherwise, it looked like a very nice place to camp. All sites were paved and looked flat, although several were closed. Each site had a picnic table but no hookups. We rarely see propane canister recycling so this was a bonus!

Hopefully, this updated review will help other campers (at least before the 2022 fire season) if they are looking for a place to camp.

Stopped for a day and it was great

Stopped there for the night, went from LA to Portland. Our campground was semi flat and big grounds. Bathrooms clean and quick accessible water. The only issue we had was there was no trashcans anywhere close to us and also our campground happened to be by the entrance and by the busy street, so instead of waking up to birds and nature it was loud cars and honking.
