We camped here for a long weekend getaway, and wanted to see what a Thousand Trails campground was like. The campground is huge, and you cannot reserve a specific site. You drive around and pick a site, then call and let them know which one you're in. This is fine, but we were looking for a quiet, private site and there are very few of those. We enjoyed our time here in our full hookup site, but the campground was just too busy for our taste. There were vehicles constantly driving up and down the road in front of our site, and lots of children running around. We don't have kids, so this was a little annoying to us. The campground has a lot of amenities such as swimming pool, lake, playgrounds, etc… that would be fantastic for a family. We like to camp for the relaxation and serenity of it, and this campground just isn't that type of place.
We had to cancel due to weather conditions. We have a 72 hour notice and they charged us for the entire reservation. Their answer is that they never give refunds under any circumstances. Beware, it doesn't say that on their website and they don't tell you when you call to reserve either. He said they don't have to post it in Texas. Never give them CC info!
We loved this place! Our campsite was on Burr Oak loop. Very spacious. Quite a walk to the bathroom though. Very clean bathrooms.
The trails are awesome! So glad we had our bikes, it allowed us to cover a lot of ground. We did see over 10 alligators. Some on the side of the trail, some in the water….I lost count of how many we saw. Great for hikes. Awesome for bikes.
We paid for three nights (over the phone-big mistake), but after two loud nights we wanted to leave. Went to the office but no one was there during posted business hours. Called the number we had and manager said that the owner will not give refunds. Asked for owner’s number but he wouldn’t give it, so we will be spending another sleepless night here. It is packed with trailers, so apparently other people don’t care, and on the plus side it has concrete pads which is nice because it had rained the day we came in.
This is the best place to escape from the big city and enjoy nature! There is so much to do. The hiking and bike paths are aplenty. We loved seeing the gators, especially when the babies were hatching (spot dozens of babies in the photos). The observatory is also incredible. There are so many friendly astronomy enthusiasts who are willing to share a peek through their telescope (pre-covid) and share their knowledge. Be sure to help keep light pollution down in that area so everyone can enjoy the stars (no flashlights or phones out). This is such a great park to enjoy and spend a weekend away from the city without traveling too far.
If you want to see alligators in their natural habitat this is the park for you. There wer so many. We even came across one on the trail eating a snake. The best part though is the observatory. There’s always plenty of stargazers up there that love to share their equipment, you can also pay for the big telescopes. We visited before Covid, so not sure how things are now. The shelter sites are nicer than most. The bathrooms were average.
We camped here over New Years. The RV circle doesn’t have a bathroom, so we had to drive over to the tent circle each time, but those bathrooms and showers are really nice. The view on the far side of the circle as you enter is spectacular, looking over the water on the bay side. The sites are fairly close to each other, but for some reason, every third site was blocked off, which gave us more space. We had a great time and can’t wait to come back!
We spend Thanksgiving in this campground. We arrived shortly after checkin and had limited selection of sites. The person at checkin did have a good site recommendation. Beware that not all sites have full hookups. For the size of the place I would have explained small convenience store but they only had ice. Our site backed up to some trees so that was nice. Good dog park and plenty of activities available. I walk the dog a lot and run and road around the grounds needs to be repaved, lots of pot holes and uneven areas.
