In the High Hills of Santee, where the South Carolina Sandhills of the Midlands region meet the coastal plain region, you’ll find Poinsett State Park. Called the "mountains of the midlands," this mixed ecosystem yields a high degree of biodiversity and some of the most unique natural sightings in the park system, especially along the Palmetto trail which winds through the Manchester State Forest.
The High Hills of Santee are dotted with the hiking and biking trails that wind through the park–some of which connect to the Palmetto Trail that leads hikers through the Manchester State Forest. Poinsett’s 10-acre lake makes for a serene setting, and can be used for fishing and johnboat rentals. The park also offers campsites, a fishing pond, a coquina bathhouse built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, pre-revolutionary grist mill ruins and rustic cabins.
Longleaf and Bluff campgrounds are located above the floodplain in the upland region of Congaree National Park. Many of the park trails can be accessed from the campgrounds.
At this time, the park's front & backcountry areas are open, including all hiking trails, Boardwalk Trail, restrooms, picnic shelter, Cedar Creek Canoe Trail & canoe landings. The western leg the Weston Lake Loop Trail remains closed. An outdoor visitor contact station is open from 9:00 to 1:00 daily, and maps and information are available outside of the Visitor Center 24/7. Many miles of hiking trails can be found in the park ranging from easy to moderately strenuous. Old growth forests, teeming with wildlife can be accessed by park trails or by exploring the many miles of waterways in a canoe or kayak. Interpretive programs including guided hikes, canoe tours and special ranger-led programs are offered throughout the year.
At this time, all sites at the Bluff Campground and select individual and group sites are available at the Longleaf Campground. Those wishing to camp at the park and who are prepared for primitive camping in the Congaree Wilderness can learn more about this type of camping and how to obtain a permit on the Backcountry Camping page on our official website.

The country store is stocked with the usual groceries, along with bait & tackle and camping accessories. We have fishing kits, s’mores kits, and many pre-made food options to make your stay easier. A paddler’s paradise, this Lowcountry park sits a short distance from I-95 and connects to Givhans Ferry State Park via 23 miles of blackwater river. Colleton State Park provides easy access to the Edisto River, one of the longest free flowing, blackwater rivers in the country, and serves as the headquarters for the Edisto River canoe and kayak trail.
Other amenities at Colleton include an easy nature trail, a campground, picnic shelters and ballfields.
Camping Information: The main roads at the park and in the campground are paved. Each site is packed sand and includes individual water, 20/30/50 amp electrical hookups and sewer. Some sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, other sites up to 25 feet. The campground is convenient to restrooms with hot showers. There is Wi-fi access near the bathhouse that covers most the campground.
