Mohican State Park Campground

This trip was memorable for so many reasons but the Chestnuts really make this park stand out.  The park has several Chestnut trees which is usually a rare find these days.  Later on, I found a sign explaining why the park had so many Chestnut trees. They are working to bring them back.  We used our grubstick to roast them over the open fire.  Many of us fondly think of the Christmas song but how often have you roasted your own Chestnuts while camping?

  

The tent sites (short walk from parking lot) and one car per tent site.  Our site was not the traditional walk up/park camp site. It was a nice change of pace.  More space and great neighbors. 

  

The camp store at this park had a lot of great things such as corn hole outside, a mining activity for the family, trikes you could rent, and most importantly ice cream.  

  

The camp store is right across from the pool.  The pool is currently closed but not many state parks in Ohio have a pool right in the camp ground area.  This is a rare treat. The pool had the traditional pool, kiddo pool, and small splash pad. You could also see where they had installed a curb cut for those in wheel chairs or needing ramps. No pool lift that I could see to help someone lower in and out of the pool. This may be put away for the season so call to find out. They also had a ramp installed that led up to the pool. One side the old steps and the other side a new  ADA ramp. 

  

 The fire wood was in a white bag and that made it easy to move and kept the car clean which I appreciated. They also had bait so if you wanted to walk behind the pool and continue to the river it wouldn't be far to go fishing. 

  

The shower house by us did not have an ADA bathroom and I didn't get a chance to look for the ADA shower.  

  

Behind the campsites (our section) you could grab a short trail to the river. This was a lovely surprise as I followed a foot path.   We opted not to do the overlook hike to the gorge as we had fellow campers with us that couldn't do a long hike for safety reasons.  It as a nice surprise to learn that one could also drive to the overlook if they need to and all parties could enjoy the view together. Two different ways to get to the same place which means if you need to split up your campers based on physical skills then you could do so and then eat at the shelter together. 

  

The camp ground has been FULL several times this season so make sure you make your reservations. This park also has a way for you to put on and take out of the river.  You will see folks walking around with their inner tubes as they will float down the small section.

  

We also drove 10 miles away to the Mohican Lodge to treat ourselves to some food and an OSU Football game at the bar downstairs. The bar has a great back patio and view of the lake.  It too has a variety of games in the back patio. They were awesome and turned on the closed caption feature for us.  Those of us that wanted to watched the game and others were able to play various games at the lodge (Ping pong, pool, read a book by the fire, go see the owls on site, and more).

  

The pool at the lodge is being redone at the moment. I may try to upload that information later.  So look for it to be new and improved. The pool also has a sauna for those that need some help to warm up/relax tight muscles. Usually, you can get a day pass for the lodge pool even when you are staying at the camp sites. This is a small fee but well worth it.

  

While we were at the lodge an outside non-profit group was there with 2 owls.  We hope to drive up to Mansfield sometime to explore their property (90 acres) with birds they have rescued or are helping. https://www.ohiobirdsanctuary.com/  they come to the lodge usually on Sat evening at 7 PM.

Chestnuts Roasting On an Open Fire (Mohican State Park)

Took me some miles but I figured it out. Highly suggest a map from the info center or other office. Nice , snug camping that's well maintained and connected to the trail system once you figure it out...This is a beautiful, hilly, scenic area, loved it. Horse, Bike and foot traffic.

Confused....

Well maintained campground with roomy camp sites.  Nice heated pool.  and many activities in the area.  Hiking, canoeing, biking, etc.

Nice and relaxing

Super super big place as far as campsites go and quantity. We went for a Bluegrass Festival and spent most of the time in the campground because it rained a lot. They do have a suspension bridge which is pretty cool some trails to hike on and Camp spots right on the river which is pretty cool. Definitely a good place to go not super secluded tho, perfect for families!

Lots of camp spaces 

As part of a nearly 200-mile bikepacking ride, this was our last stop! We spent 2 nights in their "Class B" area down in the Mohican River Valley and loved it.

The oddly named “Class A” camping area offers everything from full-hook up camping slots for campers large and small, as well as just electric sites and 10 “walk-in” primitive sites, and cabins -- all of which are reservable. This area has all the bells and whistles of a modern campground with an environmental learning center, a nice outdoor pool, clean showers and bathrooms, an extensive playground and hiking and mountain biking trails right out the front door.

The “Class B” area offers 25 primitive sites on a first-come, first-served basis. It is almost 6 miles by road from the “A” services, but only a 2-mile flatish hike along the river trail. At these sites, there are only pit toilets and a water pump. Each site has a picnic table and a small fire ring. There is also a large group camping area just a few miles away from the primitive “Class B” area.

Tubing and canoeing are available within the park, but there are also several canoe outfitters in the area which provide rental / pick up services. The sheer number of these businesses makes me think that summer time can be crowded!!

Beautiful shaded trails meander all throughout the park and they boast some of the most challenging mountain biking in the mid-west, so read your trail maps. Hiking, equestrian and winter snowmobile trails also offer some great opportunities to get out and stretch your legs throughout the year. There is also a safe and convenient, bike lane / bike path into nearby Loudonville, which has a small grocery story and the usual fast-food restaurants.

_Note: The only reason why this park didn't get a 5 star was due to their customer service. It was absolutely lousy, confusing, and the young folks working behind the counter acted as if they didn't want to be there and/or hadn't been trained. We almost left, but since we had cycled 42 miles to get there that day, we chose to stay and enjoyed our time in their Class B sites._

My husband and I love to utilize Mohican weather for hiking, backpacking, or or simply camping. we love campground B- the primitive sites as it gives campers a chance to camp by the river. In the last few years Mohican has made great strides and upgraded bathroom facilities, hiking trails with trail maps and markers, and so on. 

Mohican is also gorgeous with it's foliage anytime of the year and big Lyons falls typically a hit with families as the water is always flowing. 

Escape to Paradise 

there are no water hook ups so fill your tanks on entering..there's a pool and many restrooms and bath houses. sites are close together. nice store and activities 

large campground

Mohican offers great accommodations and clean facilities. It’s not the most secluded spots but if you are looking for something tucked away there a few sites. The ability to tube down the river and walk back to your camp site was so much fun. Trailheads are located right of the grounds and the surrounding area is full of great things to do. If swimming is your thing the pool is clean and well maintained and situated between two ridgelines so you float and stare around at wooded hillsides. Great after a day of hiking or crushing the mountain biking trails. Grab a walk-in site or one by the river. No problems with hammocks in sites we chose but not all sites have enough mature trees.

Great Campgrounds and Amenities

I absolutely love the backpacking sites in the summer because they are secluded yet close by, although most have no cell service which isn’t a big deal for me! there is plenty to do &amp; hike in the area. my last trip there was in late fall and i stayed in the traditional campground. it was wonderful because NO ONE was in the tent section and there was a beautiful view of the colorful trees. so relaxing and awesome! although i’m sure in the summer it’s packed &amp; busy!!

Amzing place

Mohican is a great place for a quick get away. I love the fact that you can get away from people in such a popular park and still have the piece and relaxation you need to decompress!

My last excursion was a park and pack where you leave your car venture into the woods and find your site. It was across the river so people never came near. Three days swinging in a hammock. Completely relaxing with the river near by.

A close (and inexpensive) getaway.

Stayed here for a night after a concert in Cuyahoga falls, good amount of sites pretty close together. All sites run along the river, just a short walk up to the bathrooms, pretty well taken care of. Has some really nice trails nearby, trailheads at the bridge. Popped a tire pulling into our campsite, some jagged metal on the ground be cautious! (We picked up as much as we could find and all other sites looked well cared for so shouldn't be an issue) More of a family camping spot it seems, but definitely not exclusively. Towards the back of campgrounds people tend to stay up later and maybe make a bit more noise, stay closer to the front if you need to get to sleep early

Camping along the river

Beautiful campsites on the water and near it. Playgrounds, cabins, camper cabins, tent sites &amp; camper sites. Some camper sites have electric &amp; water. First come first serve in the winter. One heated bathroom with a shower is open in the winter. Absolutely beautiful &amp; great trails. There is nice several mile through trail that goes from the dam area following the river to the primitive camping area and then to the camper/rv camping area. Beautiful area to see in the winter &amp; not as busy. You will mainly see people fishing for trout. During the summer I hear it gets pretty busy with people tubing on the river.

Excellent River Camping

Miles of well groomed horse trails available with creek crossings, steep hills and beautiful pine tree. There’s a primitive horse camp as well, and places to tie horses at the entrance with high lines. Dogs are welcome to. 

Awesome Horse Trails

This is our favorite park of 2019.  The hiking trails are great with a covered bridge, overlook and waterfalls.  The sites are nice and large with lots of trees throughout the park. Camp store is nice and well stocked, gem mining and mountain bike trails are located within the campground as well as a pool.  Site 138

Love the hiking trails 

Spent just one night here with my son. We were most interested in fishing for the stocked brown trout in the Clear Fork at the Mohican river. Turned out pretty well :-) The campsite was nice, but nothing remarkable. Overall, it’s a great place to family camp with lots of trails and a lot of variety. We will be back!￼

Quick Tip: If you're planning to walk the trail from the covered bridge to the dam, you have two options: A level, gravel trail on one side and a more rigorous trail on the other side. We like to take one up and one back for a little variety.

Good campground - Great walking!

We love this park! Lots of hiking! Even saw a bald eagle this trip. 

Another Thanksgiving spent in our camper and it was so nice and relaxing. There were more campers than a expected this weekend.  I guess everyone likes to social distance in there campers too.  

Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year. This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open.  The water at the full hook up sites are turned off. 

No cell service with Verizon at this park. 

Favorite Park in Ohio

We stayed in the #2 class B primative campground right next to the river. Porta potties, no water or electricity.  It is just beside the river and a nice easier hike is nearby walking distance. It is a popular hiking area, for good reason. Sites are pretty close to one another but people were nice. We would go again. 2 kids aged 8 and 6 liked it, although water is not for wading/swimming. It's a few miles from the larger state campground where the RVs stay, but went there to get firewood and a car tag. Nice lady there told me we could use their showers, but we didn't as we just stayed a night. We would go back, the forest is beautiful and trails well maintained. 

Class B #2 campground

This is a great state park campground.  We stayed at an electric site. The spots are decent sized, plenty of restrooms, pool, playground and camp store that sells ice cream!  Tubing down the creek next to the campground was super cool too.  Cabins looked very nice and secluded.  We hiked to the swinging bridge which was newly dedicated (May 2021).

Great park

The campground has plenty of great sites to choose from, in two different sections.  Whether you want to rent a cabin, have a trailer/RV or basic tent camping, you will be all set.  There shower facilities, bathrooms, pool and camp store are awesome.  Such a great place to stay!  Really look forward to going back!

Excellent Campground

This is our 4th trip to this park and it’s one of our favorites.  Lots of hiking with large pine trees , cliffs and the river. 

New this trip is the addition of WiFi and a new suspension bridge.  

We also visited the fire tower this trip and drove over to a local market and the Ugly Bunny Winery.  

Our campsite was off 2 inches side to side but level front to back.  The sites are all 50 amp and they do have several full hook up sites but this time of your they have the water shut off at the sites.  They do have potable water available at the dump station and the water is of for the black tank flush at the dump.  

The camp store is still open but with limited supplies and the rangers do still patrol that park in the off season.  

New Bridge

The cabins at Mohican State Park are highly sought after for a reason--beautiful interiors, comfortable beds, and riverfront location.  When there's been enough rain, then tubing down the river is excellent. The campground pool is unheated, but it does have a lifeguard on duty.  Good campstore and a clean, well-maintained campground. The newer playground (complete with zipline) is very popular with the kids. Go hiking in the nearby Mohican-Memorial State Forest; visit the fire tower and the dam while you're there. if you go into Loudonville, then stop by Stela's for ice cream in a homemade, chocolate dipped waffle cone and visit the eclectic Cleo Redd Fisher Museum.

Riverfront Relaxation

We thought we’d give this campground a try during the off season as it usually fills up during regular camping season. 

Campground - it’s a big campground but only part of it is open in the winter. The drive in was plowed and they continue to get plow it through the weekend. Unfortunately there was more ice than snow in the road. The creek was flowing pretty good and was really pretty to watch and we saw a bald eagle flying back and forth. 

Campsite-the pad was covered with snow and ice so we had to level a little more as the elements were a little tough to work with. The fire ring was up on a small hill which was a struggle to get up and down due to the ice but would be nice in the summer. You’d be able to see around and across the street to see the creek. Campsites are a little close together but some along the creek look a little more comfortable. 

Camp store-big and a ton of items to choose from. They had fresh eggs, local meat, ice cream and more. The staff was friendly and helpful too! 

Shower house-only one shower house was open and it was down by the maintenance building. Thankfully the camp store had a small bathroom available and was much closer. The shower house itself was clean, warm and had lots of room for multiple campers. 

Really pretty with the snow and would like to go back when it’s warmer. 

Winter Breezes

Friendly and helpful staff. Campground was clean and nicely kept. Wifi was excellent. Bathrooms were clean. Beautiful foliage and hiking trails.

Friendly folks, nice campground, clean

We stayed on a full hook up site (turned off for the season) that had a nice concrete level pad. There was also a nice side pad that kept our chairs clean. A little further back in the campground to be close to the shower house that was open. Then found out that comfort station next to us was open - nice! Also close the water which was full and rushing all weekend. 

The camp store was open on the weekend and the staff was nice to chat with. They had wood, but it was slab cut which doesn’t burn very well. We decided against it. Lots of snacks and other items still available. 

Some sites were really close to the water, almost too close as the water flooded a few spots. The campground is nice to walk if you like to get in a little workout. They also have small camper cabins and them much bigger cabins which a few are pet friendly. 

We went on a hike by the covered bridge to one of the waterfalls. Lots of trials to choose from. 

Winter Time But No Snow

We had a great three nights stay here in June, weather was lovely. Dale, one of the volunteer hosts, even helped me with a problem I had in my hot water heater while I was there. Great access to trails and tubing along the river, and a friendly group of campers. Shower houses were meticulously maintained and grounds are nice and clean. Wi-Fi was kind of sketchy for video calling at least at my site number 44.
