A surprisingly nice campground on an isolated windy road

As the title suggests, I was really surprised at how nice this campground is. Mostly dry camping with a few hook-up sites that mostly go to camp hosts, the camp sites are designed for tents and small RVs. Only a few sites will accommodate longer rigs (reservations are made through recreation.gov so check the site dimensions before you book). Getting up this way is tricky. I highly recommend coming from the north or the east if you are travelling with an RV. Coming from the west on the BRP is windy with low hanging branches. Coming from the south on 80 is insane with anything bigger than a pick-up truck (and even then it is a bit dicey).  The sites are widely spaced. Bathhouses were clean. There is a large meadow in the center of the loop for play (there are poles for a volleyball net but it wasn't rigged when we were there). There are no supplies available at the office and the nearest store is a good distance so make sure you come prepared. For local recreation, the Mount Mitchell trail departs from the campground and the nearby South Toe river is a favorite of fisherman. There is also a golf course and club in the nearby South Toe community. The town of Little Switzerland is a 30-minute drive away, with a nice restaurant and cafe, along with several local shops.  Would recommend.

Gorgeous campground with great trails

One of my favorite campgrounds in NC. Black mountain is gorgeous and hosts great hiking and biking trails. Sites are spacious, clean, and well-maintained. We got our site first come first serve during a holiday weekend, so we got lucky! Campground has tent and RV sites, some of which are located on a small river. Staff was welcoming and helpful-- they come and deliver ice and firewood to you if requested. We hiked mount Mitchell one day which was rigorous, but incredible. A must stay if camping in NC.

Amazing

The hospitality of the workers were amazing. They even delivered the firewood we bought to our campsite. Pisgah trails link right into the campground and their bathrooms were very well kept and actually nicer than most gas station restrooms!

Amazing ending or start to a summit/descent of Mt. Mitchell

Outstanding place for all of the following 1. Car Camping, 2. Jumping off point for the Mt. Mitchell trail, 3. Trail terminus location for a descent from Mt. Mitchell's summit. I agree with everything that everyone else has said about this magical place. Some tips‚Ķthere ARE killer showers here (individual rooms that are kept spotlessly clean by the Camp Hosts). Treat the Camp Hosts with the high level of respect they deserve - they work miracles in this place keeping it friendly, inviting and most of all - CLEAN! Flush toilets. A river right beside it. Tall majestic trees. All of the following are available during normal daylight business hours at the camp office - kindling (2.50), bundled firewood (5.00), fire starters (1.00), Pepsi/Diet Pepsi/Mt Dew (12oz cans - 1.00), various ice cream treats including Klondike bars (1.00). There are no bad campsites, but if you wish to 'feel' the camp, get one on the river. Oh, hoping to catch up with he kids or listen in on that conference call while you are at BMC? Forget about it! There is no cell service on T-Mobile or Verizon inside the camp (small victory for nature). BUT, let's say you have a Verizon phone, and you really really need to talk to someone - well, here's the hint of the day. Walk down the main access road toward the junction with your phone on. Pass up all three of the private residences on the right, and you'll finally come to a stand of three trees growing together ta-dah‚ĶI don't know how, but you get two bars of Verizon in this exact spot. Like everywhere in Pisgah, when it rains, it pours, so bring a tarp if you can. Great swimming holes in the river too and if you fish, bring your fly rod - dozens of deep pools to cast into up and down the river.

great for solo female camper

I stayed here after hiking mount Mitchell with my 3 dogs. I felt very safe as the campground hosts lived on site and were nearby to help with anything I needed. there are a few bath houses that are kept clean. my site was peaceful nearby the river and very close walking distance from the trail to the mountain.

A wonderful spot to enjoy nature!

I just enjoyed a beautiful weekend with friends and our dogs. This is my second stay in this campground and it is definitely one of my favorites. The campsites are very nice and roomy. The bathrooms and showers are always clean and good taken care of. The camp hosts made sure several times that we had everything we needed. It's also very nice to access the trail up to Mt. Mitchell right from the campground. We hiked up there early in the morning and it was fantastic. I would recommend this campground to anybody who enjoys nature and hiking.

Great Hiking!

This is one of of favorite places to Camp to hike up to Mount Mitchell! The fishing is great too!

Wonderful

Large smooth tent pads, great location to hiking trails, one of the cleanest bathroom/ shower facility around.

Oh yeah!

awesome sites with great views, great trails, and spotless facilities! The hosts were amazing and even though we were a bit rambunctious, they still were super nice. We stayed at a site right on the river and could hear the water flowing the whole time we were there.
