The Windy Campground

Though we were caught camping in what seemed to be a very dramatic North Carolina storm we made the best of it. Good location all around, close to the ocean and cool towns nearby. Showers could use some updating but I guess that’s what we get for winter camping on the coast! Also another down side… close to the highway so it was a bit loud at night

Winter break fun!

This was our maiden voyage for the family RV--we decided on this destination kind of on a whim and were happy with our decision. We've been tent campers forever and were excited to see what RV camping was all about.

This is a HUGE complex with various "levels" of sites. From basic to fancy, crowded to sparse. I think we would've felt a little claustrophobic if it were the summer, but this was great for us in the off season. Our loop was packed and gravelly, but others open during the off season were a little more roomy and "polished."

We enjoyed biking all over the place (including a family-friendly bike trail to the VB boardwalk), playing on the many small playgrounds, swimming in the dome-covered pool (there are three more of them for warm weather), playing mini-golf, and enjoying our time.

Bathroom/shower houses were clean and well-positioned close to all of the camping loops.

Great Campground

One of my favorite campgrounds in the Mid-Atlantic region!

Wouldn't Come Back

Wet wood. Really wet. Most sites were kind of crap. Either wide open with mushy pull- ins or un-even. There were a few that were great. #3 #1 and #6 were our favs. Was not communicated that you would need exact change for wood since the facilities were closed and there is no camp host. You have to drive 20 mins to any gas station or grocery in order to do that so letting campers know would be great.

The trails were super easy, wide and flat. PERFECT for young families or those looking for a stroll rather than a hike. The lake was beautiful. We make a point of just checking trail lengths and camp sites before we come out (pictures can be deceiving on the latter lol) so we had no idea we were going to be staying at a park named after a confederate general. Felt gross about that. None of the buildings at the plantation were open while we were there so I don't know if the education was as super glossy as the outside plaques….. his grave even had a confederate flag placed on it. Like, really???? If you walk out to the graveyard there is only one small paragragh that will make you smile and feel a little bit better about where you are. Brought our 12 year old so it opened up some really great conversations that we could lead but it would have been nice to have a bit of the uglier history actually mentioned in any of the plaques!

Wouldn't come back, but the area it self was really pretty and the trails were super easy. 4.5 miles felt like nothing to complete!

Fantastic campground with a unique experience

Fantastic campground. Very basic, yet had a great appeal. It was minutes to walk to the bay, and only minutes to drive to Virginia Beach center. Each site was open, yet surrounded by trees, so you still felt somewhat secluded. It was so relaxing to sit in a tube and float on the bay. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the facilities were very clean. Be forewarned, it is directly next to the army base. We have stayed here twice. When we stayed to the left, closer to the camp store, we heard nothing. It was very quiet. Our 2nd trip, we stayed to the right. We could throw a stick and hit the government fences. Every night, we heard aerial training, saw fighter planes flying overhead, even had a helicopter nearly put out our fire. One night, we woke up at 2am to m80s going off in our ears. It is all training and there was no danger at all, but it was quite noisy for my comfort. Was pretty cool to hear the star spangled banner play every morning at 9am. It was definitely an experience I will never forget! I will definitely be visiting again, but choosing to stay closer to the store next time!

Super Campground!!!

Great place! Walking distance to the beach. Clean bathrooms Close to Nags Head where you can buy groceries or go to local restaurants Beach is wide, nice daily walks, birds watching at Pea Island just 8 miles from campground. Yes, the road is there but at night is not busy. I added a map as a picture… if you go to sites B’s and C’s east side… those are great! Stayed at C15 and C21 … sunrise from your camper bedroom! Just perfect!

Relaxation on the Sound.

This KOA is actually still under construction. As with everything else Covid-19 has set it back. But there are many sites available. A lot of the amenities are already available. Dog park, shower house, store, children's play area and they can fill your propane tanks for you. Full hookups with WiFi and cable. Drive through and back in sites with water views all around. We spent a week there and it was so relaxing. They also rent campers and little trailers. Check out their website.

Meh

Not a bad campground, nice area. LOTS of overhead noise from jets (you do get use to it).

Some people in the campground started BLARING music at 2am and just partying hard. Tried to contact ANYONE to make it stop, but no one ever answered phones or contacted us back (or said anything to the obnoxious people). Said something to staff the next day and they didn't seem to care. Won't be back.

Love VA State Parks!

Great campground! Right on the water (just walk over the dune!). Sites are not as spacious as other VA State Parks, but you're still not crammed on top of each other.

GREAT walking/hiking area across the road from campground. LOTS of trails to spend the day on!

Outstanding campground with easy access to the beach!

We were very pleased with our camping experience at First Landing State Park.  The campground is well maintained and has a knowledgable and friendly staff.

The drive thru campsite we chose was clean, level, and came equipped with a fantastic fire ring and picnic table.  There was lots of room on the site, and we could have set up a couple of tents toward the back if needed.

Access to the beach and surrounding hiking/biking trails was the real strength of this location!  It is certainly not wilderness camping, but with water and electric hook ups, we set up a successful basecamp for exploring the region.

The weather was great for late October, and the crowds were minimal.  We will likely make this an annual trip.
