## Overview

 Jemez Falls Campground is located in a stunning Ponderosa Pine and forest meadow environment. The campground elevation is 7,880 feet above sea level. Come prepared for warm days and cool nights.\_\_ The Cerro Pelado Area closure prohibits members of the public from entering Trail 137 from access points South of the East Fork Trailhead. Entry is allowed North from the East Fork Trailhead to Las Conchas Trailhead. Please remember that this campground is special. Help keep it clean and beautiful by using the trash dumpsters. Campground has 52 camp sites with picnic table and fire ring. Paved access which allows trailers and RV\'s up to 40 feet.\_\_ For the 2022 Season of Use, loop 4 sites are non-generator use areas. Loops 1-3 may use generators from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. There is paved access from the highway and paved internal roads to individual campsites. There are no RV hook-ups. Drinking water is provided from spigots conveniently located throughout the campground. Vault toilets provide basic sanitation needs. A campground host is on duty.\_\_ 
## Recreation

 Overnight camping, fishing, and hiking are main attractions. Other recreational activities include outdoor photography and nature viewing. The campground is within the heart of the Jemez National Recreation Area.
## Facilities

 The campground contains 51 overnight tent and RV/trailer campsites. For the 2021 Season of Use loops 3 and 4 sites are non-generator use areas.There is paved access from the highway and paved internal roads to individual campsites. There are no RV hook-ups at the campground. Drinking water is provided from spigots conveniently located throughout the campground. Vault toilets provide basic sanitation needs. A campground host is on duty during the summer camping season. 
## Natural Features

 The East Fork Jemez Wild and Scenic River runs close to the campground. The campground is situated on rolling terrain shaded by pines and sunny in open meadows. 
## Nearby Attractions

 Jemez Falls, the largest waterfall in the Jemez Mountains, is a half mile hike from the campground. The Valles Caldera National Preserve and Bandelier National Monument are within short driving distance along the Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway.

**Campground Review: **

Imagine 1.25 Ma ago an eruption blew apart the landscape of Northern New Mexico that would rival the shear volume erupted by the world famous Yellowstone hotspot!  Jemez Falls and its namesake campground are the closest, largest, and most developed CG to the [Valles Caldera](https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/valles_caldera/) proper and the entrance to the caldera's access roads.  The [Jemez Falls CG](https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/274315) is more developed than the nearby primitive (dispersed) sites that surround the flanks of the caldera proper, this CG offers 50 single sites and 2 double sites, $10 and $50 respectively.  Most of the sites can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 40' in length with good options for tent camping as well.  Each site has the usual metal fire ring, along with picnic tables and a paved driveway/parking area.  You can reserve sites from mid May through Mid September.

Even if you plan to stay here for a couple weeks (which is the limit) you'll have more than enough to keep you preoccupied!  If you want to drive around and hike or fish in the caldera proper then you will need to go to the [Valles Caldera Visitors Center](https://www.nps.gov/vall/index.htm) and buy a pass.  They typically cost $25 but when we visited during the [International Balloon Fiesta](https://balloonfiesta.com/) the fee was waived.  If they are charging when you arrive, you can also use your [National Parks Pass](https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm) to get entrance.  Be sure to arrive early on the weekends as they restrict the # of permits they hand out.

Now with all this exposed rock you know there's going to be some amazing climbing!  All of the rock in the immediate area was created by the caldera and related volcanic and magmatic activity in the area in the past few million years.  This gives you the opportunity to climb on some "bulletproof" welded tuff (hardened volcanic ash) much like what exists at the world famous Smith Rock State Park in Oregon.  If you want to find out more about the interesting geology of the area you can look [Here](http://www.nmnaturalhistory.org/volcanoes/valles-caldera-jemez-volcanic-field#targetText=The%20caldera%20formed%20by%20collapse,%2C%20pumice%20and%20ash%2Dflows.)

**Product Review:**

Being a Ranger for the Dyrt allows us to test and review gear from time to time!  This time we got to test out the Men's [Free Rein Jacket](https://www.redledge.com/collections/best-sellers/products/mens-free-rein-jacket) by Red Ledge.

**Pros:**

*   First thing I want to say about this jacket is that it is super cheap for a rain jacket this rugged and with this many features!  It was only ~90$ after shipping and is comparable to some of my other jackets that were 2-3x as much! 
*   I also really liked the mesh fabric on the inner portion of the breast pockets.  It added another dimension of breath ability to the jacket to prevent condensation from building up on the inside.  This was a nice addition to the gusseted armpits flaps to help air out.
*   The last thing I really liked about this jacket was the amount of high-vis color options you had to choose from!  I went with the Hi-Vis Orange which is close to a hunters orange and came in very handy as there was active hunting while we were hiking in the Valles Caldera.

**Cons:**

*   There were only a couple of things that we thought could have been improved.  The first was to have the armpit openings be meshed on the inside to prevent it from opening wide up.  We really liked that feature in the breast/side pockets and wished it had been incorporated into the armpits as well.
*   The other thing was the inability to zip the jacket from the top or bottom, which would have allowed you to kind of blouse the bottom of the jacket.  

**Score:** **4/5**

*   While other jackets have more features, this is a great, durable rain jacket at a price point that is reasonable and affordable for most.  This was a great jacket to test and I anticipate using it for many more rainstorms and windy belays in the future.

Ranger Review: Red Ledge Free Rein Jacket in and Around the Valles Caldera

This campground is a bit of a drive outside of Albuquerque, but it's worth it because it gets you up in the mountains where the landscape and scenery completely changes from ABQ. We went in the winter so of course there weren't many people and a lot of the areas were closed but it was still a great area and the hike to Jemez Falls is short and rewarding with great views. There is also a hot springs somewhere close by as well, although we didn't go. 

Good Camping

Jemez is a short drive out of ABQ and close enough to be convenient for Santa Fe and Los Alamos residents. We drove up on a Sunday afternoon and found a clean campground to setup in. We had a whole area to ourselves as most people don't camp when it looks like there is a storm but we didn't mind the drizzle. I had my own camp fire kit and used the wood other camper left at their sites to keep up warm. It's bear and hunting season so we didn't wonder too far off trail but Jemez is a great spot to wonder around in. A good friend from Dallas refers to it as NM's Big Bend

All to yourself on a Sunday

The views at this campground are breathtaking. The camp host is wonderful and super funny. The sites are very clean and so are the restrooms. There are lots of hiking trails around so go check it out.

Beautiful

Jemez Falls campground is located in the heart of the Jemez, close to climbing, great hiking, fishing, hot springs, the Valles Caldera NP and Bandelier National Monument.

The campsites have plenty of space, and are more private than most campgrounds with the exception of those that are heavily wooded. The ponderosa canopy provides a fair amount of shade during the hot days. There are picnic tables and campfire rings at every site. There are vault toilets that are surprisingly clean. Just down the road are the Jemez Falls, a great place to splash in the river.

The campground is generally a family friendly environment where kids can roam in bicycle gangs, and dogs can chase a frisbee. Warning though, on many occasions the weekends have been a little noisy with rowdy campers that don’t think quiet hours apply. Don’t get me wrong, who doesn’t like kicking back by a campfire with friends? Who needs to be so loud that their voices ring through all of the camping loops and keep 70 other campers awake until 1 a.m? So yes, the quiet hours are from 10-6 or 8, but they don’t seem to be enforced. As a result, our family tries to weeknight camp at Jemez Falls whenever possible.

Ponderosa Peace

This is a gorgeous area to camp and explore. The campsites are spaced nicely and the facilities are easily accessible. We loved it!

Hello Jemez! 

Jemez Falls Campground has nice sites that are well spaced out. Each campsite has its own table and fire rings. Vault toilets and water spigots are also located at the campground. I’ve been told not to drink their water though so bring your own.

You can hike to the hot springs from the Jemez Falls. At the falls you’ll see a sign for the hot springs, follow this trail. Once you reach a stream on this trail, you’ll know you’re getting close. The McKulley Hot Springs are so nice, I highly recommend checking them out!

Don't drink the water at the campground

This is a beautiful campground for either tent or evening camping. All sites are by reservation, so there was no stress about finding a spot. Standard vault toilets were pretty well kept, potable water faucets were well located, and firewood was plentiful, although the easiest to find was fairly green still. Sites were decently spaced, although camping etiquette reminders should have been in place (splitting wood at midnight, really???). There were good hiking trails nearby and water to play in, and the sites drained well in the afternoon rains. I look forward to returning.

A jewel in the Jemez

This was our 4th visit to this campground and we still love it and plan to return again.  Sites are nicely spaced apart with tons of trees for shade.  Hiking trails lead into forest from various points as well as the major hike, Jemez waterfall.  

  

There are pit toilets only, and water fill stations for personal use, not camper fills.  Dogs are ok with leash.  

  

YOu must reserve spot ahead of time on recreation.gov as this campground fills up weeks ahead of time for every weekend.

Beautiful campground in a ponderosa forest!

We were happy to see there was still some camp sites open but they did fill up fast. Most sites are fairly spaced apart to allow privacy so that was really nice. Camp hosts were very helpful, vault toilets were clean. Loved that everything was relatively close to our site including the potable water spigots. I only wish that a stream of water could run through the campsites as my kids love that! Fortunately jemez falls isn’t too far and lots of places to explore in the jemez that was in short driving distance. 

Loved it here!

First things to know: there are no sites with any hookups. And phone connectivity is VERY limited. We had one bar, so we could send some text messages, but forget about surfing or streaming. It's a beautiful campground, and large. The sites, for the most part, are spread apart nicely, affording a lot of space and reasonable privacy. There are not, however, any sites that will accommodate truly big rigs. We are 29' 3" Class A, and were the ONLY Class A on site(and it was 100% booked). We had a small tow vehicle. We just fit in our space, a pull through of sorts. There are, it seems, a lot of back in spots, but again, not for the largest rigs. There are TWO Campground hosts...so many spaces here. Our interaction with both was quite limited, but very friendly. The best things about this site are 1) being here in summer, it's SO much cooler than areas like Albuquerque, where we live,&amp; 2) there is GREAT accessibility to two of the truly most popular trails in NM. Behind campsite 28 is a short(0.4 mile) trail that leads to Trail 137. When you hit that intersection, go left to visit Jemez Falls(beautiful) or right to climb to McCauley Springs(warm springs). Each of those spots has other, much more trafficked trails, so in both cases, you feel like you're sneaking up on the hot spot. Also, we were a short drive to perhaps the mostly LOVELY of all NM trails, the Las Conchas Trailhead, a 3 mile round trip hike through the most lovely pastures around. Wildflowers and chipmunks abounded, and the trail parallels the Jemez River. VERY popular spot; go early or forget about finding parking. Only drawbacks to the campsite(which is really 4.5 stars): trash bins filled quickly and were overflowing. The vault toilet areas smelled; you could smell them as you walked by. The wonderful trailhead I mentioned by Space 28 is only accessible by walking THROUGH the campsite. The folks staying there were nice, but I felt bad about breaking Rule#1 of camping. The campground is about.3 miles off the main highway. The road between highway and campsite is pretty narrow. Two RVs passing each other would be a FRIGHTFULLY tight fit. BUT, we highly recommend, and look forward to many return visits.

Lovely campsite with access to some GREAT trails

I stayed a week at Jemez Falls campground learning all about my new van. This is a pretty spot with lots of shade and plenty of firewood. There is water available but no electric. The site is level and I was able to back in easily! There was no service with t-mobile and that was a good thing!There are fun hiking trails nearby. 

First trip in my Winnebago Van

At first we were unsure our 28 foot rig would work out, but it did. This is a pretty, very natural campground where you are amongst and amidst the trees. Jemez Falls is a relatively short hike from the campground, or you can unhook and drive to the parking lot at the trailhead.

We came here right when the season started and we’re one of the first ones to check in. The camp host was very friendly and helpful! 

We stayed at site 13 in loop 1 and it was very clean, close to the bathrooms which were vault toilets that were clean. There are two water spigots in walking distance and the closer one is at the bathrooms.  Our family always loves going here with all the beautiful tall trees. It’s just a short drive to great hiking locations and the Jemez waterfall overlook.  

There are no electric/water hook ups here and no dump station for RV/trailers. Lots of these using generators and most are aware of the noise and keep it at a minimum except for our neighbors who constantly felt the need to turn their truck on and headlights would hit our tent several times during the night. Then in the morning they broke their generator somehow. Seems they had a few too many. Otherwise the rest of the campers were very nice!

We come here once a year and it always seems to be a great stay! 

Always a great place!

This is the first camping trip my husband and I have taken together. It couldn't have been more perfect. The Jerez Falls campground is beautifully serene and the falls are gorgeous.

Beautiful Campground

I've been to this campground several times, sometimes camping, sometimes just for the hiking.  The views are awesome!  There are waterfalls along the Jemez river which runs through the campground and many trails to hike.  This is one of my favorite campgrounds in the Jemez.

Love this campground

I did not originally plan on spending one night let alone two nights here! The second night almost didn't happen but the camp host Leo was extremely helpful! 

I loved this place and definitely want to go back.

A great find

We went there in a last minute reservation to have a place to sleep. It is a nice campground to spend a night or two as it does not have showers. 

Nice calm campground

Nice campground, plenty of spots to camp. Reservation system ran til the end of September,  then Firstcome Firstserved came into effect. No phone signal for my Mint mobile. Fires allowed, after the peak summer fire season.
