Las Vegas Bay Campground is located just minutes from Las Vegas on the western edge of the park and has lush vegetation that shades nearly every campsite. There is a mix of palm trees, oleanders, mature cottonwood trees and native vegetation that also helps provide privacy between sites. Wildlife in the area includes many species of birds and lizards along with antelope squirrels and the occasional coyote.

Las Vegas Bay is a location where you can quickly get away from the hustle and bustle of the city to just relax and enjoy the outdoors. Bluffs Trail is a well-defined trail leads along the bluffs with grand views overlooking Las Vegas Wash. The trailhead starts next to site #72 in the campground. This area is ideal to bird watch, so be sure to bring your binoculars and camera. There are no services within walking distance and no access to the lake. However, trails, launch ramps, fishing piers, marinas and restaurants can be reached by car in about 20 minutes.

## Overview

Red Rock Canyon's standard, RV, and group campsites are located in the stunning Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, an approximate 20 mile drive from "The Las Vegas Strip." Visitors enjoy hiking, rock climbing, bike riding and scenic driving in this unique Mojave Desert environment.

## Recreation

The Red Rock Scenic Drive & Visitor Center as well as the Red Spring / Calico Basin areas are 3 and 2 miles respectively from the campground and accessible by vehicles. Activities available from the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center are hiking, bike riding and rock climbing with guided hikes and educational programs available on certain days.

## Facilities

There are 53 individual standard sites. Ten People and two Vehicles are allowed per site in the individual sites. There are six RV Sites which have room for one RV and a vehicle. Seven large group sites can accommodate up to 20 people and 8 vehicles. All standard sites and group sites contain picnic tables, grills and campfire circles. All group sites have shaded picnic table area. Some individual standard sites have shaded picnic table areas. Each group site is primarily tenting with 10 individual small tent areas/group sites. Vault toilets, trashcans, and drinking water (in the individual camping area) are provided. While Moenkopi Road is paved, the roads throughout the campground are gravel.

## Natural Features

Red Rock Canyon's unique geology with multicolored sandstone atop of gray limestone creates a unique environment with seasonal springs and streams. There are 54 year-round water sources in the Spring Mountains. It's also home to threatened desert tortoise and living cultural reminders of the pioneer past, wild burros and horses. The campground is in a quiet bowl near some of the most popular rock climbing destinations in the country, providing privacy with limited shade under the group picnic pavilion.

Cancellations*: *cancellation becomes a "late cancellation" at 12:01 am EST on the day before arrival. • $10.00 fee if reservation is changed/cancelled earlier than the day before arrival. • $10.00 plus first night's camping fee is charged if reservation is cancelled the day before or the day of the arrival, except when the reservation is only for 1 night (in which case only the first night's camping fee is charged). Created in 1936 to provide habitat and protection for desert bighorn sheep, Desert NWR is the largest wildlife refuge outside of Alaska. At 1.6 million acres (643,000 hectares), the refuge can cover Rhode Island twice - and still have enough room left over for a quarter of a million football fields. Teeming with diversity over a vast landscape, Desert NWR boasts over 500 plant species as it transitions from the Mojave to the Great Basin Desert.  
 
While Desert NWR has been home to people for thousands of years, from Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute) to ranch homesteaders, the refuge still remains largely unchanged by human hands. Over 1.3 million acres (536,000 hectares) of the refuge is proposed wilderness, and has been managed as de facto wilderness since 1974. Kyle Canyon Picnic Area is set in the beautiful Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, just 23 miles from Las Vegas. Visitors enjoy hiking, horseback riding and scenic driving in this forested desert oasis. Natural Features: The Spring Mountains National Recreation Area is a beautiful island in the desert, brimming with breathtaking scenery and diverse flora and fauna. The Bristlecone pine, the worlds oldest organism, and the rare Mount Charleston blue butterfly are both found within the Spring Mountains. More than 100 springs create the namesake for the mountain range, making it an ideal place to escape the heat of the city. The picnic area is set in an open forest of ponderosa pine, mountain mahogany and Gambel oak, which provides partial shade. Manzanita and wild roses dot the landscape. A seasonal stream and the highway parallels the area. Most sites have views of the surrounding towering canyon walls. Recreation: The 1.6-mile Fletcher Canyon Trail begins nearby. Facilities: This year-round picnic area contains several single and double sites, four of which are accessible. Sites are equipped with a picnic table, campfire ring and grill. Flush toilets and drinking water are provided. Roads and parking spurs are paved. Nearby Attractions: More than 60 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails crisscross the area; two trails allow mountain biking. Rock climbing, picnicking and scenic driving are popular activities.

Kyle Canyon Campground

A large part of the Spring Mountains is remote and undeveloped. Visitors can venture out and set up camp in these remote areas with just a little planning from the guidelines below

The best known areas in the Spring Mountains include Mack's Canyon, Champion Road, and Lovell Canyon but those can get crowded in warm weather. Dispersed camping is NOT allowed in the vicinity of developed recreation areas such as campgrounds, picnic areas, or trailheads. Many people drive or hike out on Forest Service roads into the woods and find a clearing or a spot with a nice view or good shade. Do not drive on meadows to access your camping site. Drive on existing roads to prevent resource damage. Dispersed camping is allowed outside a one-mile perimeter away from campgrounds and 100 feet from any stream or spring. To prevent resource damage please keep your campsite within 150 feet from a roadway.

How to Pick a Campsite
If you are going to an area where others have camped before, pick a site that has been used before. Plants, soil and wildlife are impacted by new campsites so using existing ones will minimize your impact in the forest. If there is no existing campsite, then follow these Leave No Trace guidelines.
- Camp on bare soil if possible, to avoid damage or killing plants and grass.
Do NOT camp within 100 feet of any water source, as plants near water are especially fragile.
- Do not camp in the middle of a clearing or meadow; try to make your campsite less visible so that other visitors will see a "wild" setting
- Do not try to level or dig trenches in the ground at your campsite. Pick a tent site that is already level with good drainage.

Going to the Bathroom in the Woods
Dispersed camping means no bathrooms and no outhouses. That means extra care has to be taken in disposing of human waste. To dispose of feces, dig a hole six (6) inches deep at least 100 feet away from any water source. When you are done, fill the hole with the dirt you dug up and take your toilet paper with you to dispose of in a proper waste container. A ziplock bag is helpful for this. Never defecate or leave toilet paper on top of the ground since it could easily get into the local water source and contaminate it.

Treating Your Water
We used to be able to take a cup and drink directly out of the sparkling creek, a rushing waterfall, or a clear, deep lake. There is NO safe water source anymore. With an increasing population and visitation to the Spring Mountains, water sources have been contaminated with invisible micro-organisms that can make people very ill and even kill them in some cases. Giardia is a common contamination that has been spread through improper toileting and wild animals to many water sources. It will cause diarrhea, cramping, and other physical problems.
The only way to ensure that water from any undeveloped source is safe is to treat it. That means heating it until it comes to a rolling boil, using water purification tablets or a water purification filter. Water from faucets in developed recreation areas has been tested and treated and is safe to use without treating.

You might not think of Las Vegas as an outdoors town, but Nevada is more than just desert and slot machines. Las Vegas is actually the hub city for a large area of public land that many forget about.

The best camping near Las Vegas (and the most well-known) is at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Lake Mead is quite the popular spot for both RV and tent camping. If you want to day trip to Lake Mead and find free campgrounds nearby, you have BLM land in almost every direction. If you want more traditional accommodations, you have Boulder City or Henderson, NV, just nearby.
