For emergency tenting only when paddling Headwaters Water Trail

This used to be a designated camping area adjacent to the public boat launch for Lake Winnie, but it seems it has been “decommissioned “ as a full fledged official campsite due to becoming a party spot. However, it is still a designated stop on the Mississippi Headwaters water trail, and so paddlers coming down the river from Cass Lake are allowed to camp here if the waves and wind on Winnie are too rough. There is a good boat access, good vault toilets, a grassy tent area (but fire rings have been removed). If you have arrived by paddle, you could walk down the forest access road to “The Big Fish” restaurant for dinner if you want, but there is nothing like a convenience store within walking distance.

  • Location at sw corner of Lake Winnie
  • Tent site for paddlers on water trail only
  • Tenting site near lake north of boat ramp
