Located in the heart of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on the shores of Lake Superior lies the Munising Tourist Park Campground. This City owned campground was established in 1924 and has long since been a stopping point for campers visiting pictured rocks. With its unique location on Lake Superior it gives campers the ability to recreate on Lake Superior while experiencing breathtaking views. The campground is just 3 miles west of Munising where campers will find boat rides such as Pictured Rocks Cruises, Glass Bottom Boat Cruises’s and the Riptide Ride all located within 3 miles of the campground.

Our location provides for day trips to Marquette, Grand Marais and Taquamenon Falls all within an hours drive without having to haul your camper!

Munising Tourist Park Campground

GREAT campground!! I have stayed here twice, the campground is positioned right on Lake Superior and if you’re lucky and can grab a lake front space - it’s gorgeous! There are a variation of sites from full hookup to Rustic tent areas, I have stayed in both and they all offer plenty of space for your setup.

  

The facilities are always clean and the staff is extremely accommodating! They even gave me a refund when they were able to resell my site for a night I decided to stay on Grand Island instead.

They also offer showers for $5 for people backpacking near by.

You can purchase firewood (and wheelbarrow it to your site), some snacks, fire starters, camping necessities, and cute souvenirs in the check-in building.

I love this campground! Friendly staff

This is a small quaint campground that worked perfect for us with tents - we were down a pretty long path from the RVs. The sites are ON The beach on lake Superior, so are BEAUTIFUL! They are clean and neatly kept, close to town if you need to grab anything. There is also a little store on site if you need any thing necessary. 

When we were there, the wind coming off the lake was 40+ mph... so we didn't have a great weather experience (plus torrential rain) as you'll see in pics. however, had it been clear, the sunrise would have been a pretty amazing cup of coffee.

Rustic Tent Sites: Beautiful... in good weather

The main attraction in Munising is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. If you can’t get into the campgrounds in Pictured Rocks this site is a good alternative due to its proximity (three miles) the downtown and the entrance to the park. The campground is located right on Lake Superior so some of the sites have great water views and you have access to the lake for swimming and boating. Waterfront sites are great but when we were there it was really windy as the north winds were blowing hard off the lake.

This is one of those parks that really fills up in the summer, so book early (which you can do online). The park has 127 sites that are a mix of tent, water/electric, and water/electric/sewer and it seems like sites are placed haphazardly and are close to your neighbor. In some ways, the quality of your stay depends on your site. When we were there it had rained the day prior and some sites were really wet and muddy making it hard to go from your car to camper. The park is on M-28 so it is easy to get in and out of but means that sites along the road are noisy as this is a heavily traveled road. 

There is a little store in office that sells wood for $7 but we found it cheaper down the street. They advertise free WiFi but we were never able to get a good connection so we gave up and used our Verizon hotspot (which worked well).

Our intention was to put our kayaks in the lake and paddle around Pictured Rocks NL but upon learning how dangerous that can be in our recreational kayaks we opted for a sunset boat cruise instead. This was a good option and we loved the narrated 2 ½ - hour cruise. Unfortunately, it was completely overcast and the cliffs were not as colorful as they would be if the sun had been out. There are lots of waterfalls in the area and since there had been lots of rain prior to our visit they were pretty spectacular. Definitely plan on spending time hiking in Pictured Rocks NL but beware there are lots of restrictions on where dogs can go (basically just developed areas like parking lots and campgrounds). The nearby Hiawatha National Forest is a great place for hiking and paddling. Another paddling option is the Au Train Canoe Trail which is close to the campground and has a public boat launch.

Right on Lake Superior

I was in spot N which is one of their rustic tent spots right on Lake Superior. $25/night which was very reasonable. My site had a nice, level and sandy spot for the tent. All spots have a picnic table and fire ring. The people who run it were very nice, they have a small general store for food items, other small sundries and firewood. The bathroom facilities are maybe 150 yards away, not a bad walk. You can hear some road traffic, only drawback. Great landing spot to do all that Pictured Rocks has to offer if you don’t want to backpack. 

Great spot on Superior! 

The full hook up sites along the lake are great.  The beach is right behind your site.  good water pressure.  The sites are smaller in width than some places but make up for it in length. 

Best view ever

Stayed in a rustic tent spot. Short walk to your site from where you can park. Rustic tent spots are mostly sand right on the beach. We experienced quite some rain one of our nights. We had a tarp set up but it collected a lot of water. Nice clean campground. Wish we had been more prepared for weather.

Secluded and nice, be prepared for weather 

This is a nice spacious campsite. The sites have plenty of room s for multiple cars to park. The view of Lake Superior is fantastic in the evening. Hot showers with plenty of shower rooms were nice too

Nice camp site 

Upon arrival we thought this might be a cramped campground, but that was not the case. Despite being in a spot right at the intersection of the only two roads through the site, we found this to be a relaxed and tranquil site. The name suggests otherwise, but the amount of RVs, at least the weekend we were there, was far lower than the amount of tent campers (a rarity for those of us who prefer to actually camp). Ever site has stunning views of the water, though the low ground level did allow some minor flooding on our site after a squall ripped through. On that note, make sure your tent is staked VERY firmly, we lost one of our tents to a storm that rolled through off of Superior while we were out hiking!

The staff is very friendly and accommodating, the bathrooms were clean, and the site and beach were pristine. The beach is a HUGE draw for this site, running just off the main road and close to town we were shocked at how remote and untouched it felt. We had stunning sunset views every night, even when a creepy mist rolled through the site (see pictures).

There is super easy access to Marquette's dining and hiking - we were able to get out and hike Hogsback. Even easier access to hiking in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which was the point of our trip.

I can also highly recommend not only the Pictured Rocks boat tours, but the shipwreck tours. Because of the cold water most wrecks are very well preserved.

All in all this campsite has tons to offer, not only in the site itself but in location. (One lost star simply because our fire pit was flooded out so easily)

Picturesque and peaceful

Booked this trip with the sole purpose of kayaking the Pictured Rocks National Park. Camp site was great, had a great walk in site which was right in the beach of Lake Superior.

The facilities of the campground were great. The shower and bathroom facilities were clean, and easily accessible. Drinking water was readily available, as was fire wood for purchase.

Overall a great location and experience.

Kayak Adventure

Hands down the people that work here are wonderful.  They bring you right to your site and help you back in.  They even loaned me an extra power cord and helped hold up my awning when I put it up.  

It’s a lovely quiet waterfront and easily accessible.  Wish we would have snagged a site with a view but the public access points are just fine.  

Cons - not much shade or privacy.  Playground is falling apart (slide and swings)

Amazing 

Awesome spot to camp if you’re visiting the pictured rocks.  There are no campgrounds in the National Park itself, so it’s about a 15-20 minute drive to see them.  The campground had everything I could ask for!  The showers were warm and spacious, and they even had WiFi so I could submit some homework (school doesn’t stop for camping unfortunately).  They had a camp store with wood and little souvenirs, and the hosts were great and made sure we had what we needed.   Only downside was the wood was a little expensive, and they went around collected unused wood to resell it (I like to leave any wood leftover for the next campers!) The campers next to us gave us all their wood before they left though, so that was awesome!  The pictured rocks and Munising have tons of trails and awesome waterfalls to explore, as well as the cruise and kayak tours of the rocks.  Eh Burger was an awesome spot to go for dinner before our sunset cruise!   We will definitely be camping here again when we want to go back to see the rocks.

Great private campground!

Since reservations were hard to come by closer to Pictured Rocks- busy weekend in Sept!  We stayed here our first night.  I am not a huge fun of campgrounds of this type- with smaller, less secluded sites, but in a bind it worked out well.  Good facilities and near Tannery Falls which was a nice little hike to a large waterfall.  Large number of sites, we will opt for the rustic tent/walk-in sites next time since they seemed to be more secluded. 

  

Some sites very near the water- I would think these are a good choice! We arrived late, so had minimal options.

  

\*visit Tannery Falls- Not a ton of water flowing, but very rustic and relaxed place! We didn't see anyone else for most of our time there :)   Also near is Munising falls- easy access to a nice waterfall and Miners Falls another pretty easy to access falls.

just stayed a night

Positioned at a good distance from the town of Munising, meaning far enough so you feel disconnected, but still close enough to were you can quickly reach the town, this campground is easily one of the best in the area and one of my favorites.  Complete with entities such as showers, this campground overlooks Grand Island and various other smaller islands, resting in Lake Superior, it really makes you feel like you are in a movie.  One of the hidden gems of this campground is the rustic tent sites, which allow you to camp on the beach, have fires on the beach under the stars, and wake up to the sound of gently crashing waves.  It also is a good size campground, creating the family neighborhood atmosphere and with the way it is designed and the view it gives, it helps make connect with nature and fellow campers in a cool way.  If you want to explore Pictured Rocks, and camping is your thing, this is the place to go.

Serene and Movie Like

We lucked out and got a last minute rustic site in late July. No near neighbors, really felt like a private beach! Restrooms were far, far away, so be prepared for that (I have two kids with me and my daughter was not thrilled about the options I gave her!) We brought a sport wagon to haul stuff from the parking lot in, not a bad walk- one a little bridge, into the woods. The waves were loud enough to drown out the highway, which was near. Great location and beach!

City run campground on lake superior. Beautiful views, sandy shore. Most sites have water and electricity, some have sewer hookup. Some walk in sites on the shoreline. We camped on site 5. 
Pros: 
1) Huge, wide open site, no trees.
2) lakefront site, great view. 
3) great spot to base camp, near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Grand Island National Recreation Area, and the Hiawatha National Forest.  
Cons: 
1) water and electric are far apart,meaning I had to run 55' of electric cord and 75' of water hose in opposite directions to hook up. 
2) no buffer for strong winds off lake superior 
3) highway is very close to the campground, noise is constant 
4) some sites are low and flood after rains

Great place to stay while visiting the Munising area. Lots of cool area shops and even a few waterfalls nearby. Hard to beat the great Lake Superior views. We came at a good time of year, and there were quite a few people around.

Great Area to Tour While Camping

We booked late yet could get only 2 nights at this park. We were in site # 86 with full hook up. The waterfront sites (lake Superior) were amazing with fire pits behind the campers on the beach. All the big driftwood along the shoreline. It's a nice park, we walked the beach with a cocktail &amp; met some nice people. We made dinner &amp; were sitting there at our picnic table when a ice cream guy came buy in a tricycle playing music came by we bout ice cream for dessert. Loved it he was a volunteer working for the park. 

  

We had a family next to us in a tent with 4 kids &amp; the youngest cried all night. OMG I'm glad we only had 2 nights of it.  This campground is beautiful, it was cool out and raining a bit so we were limited on what to do.

  

We went to Picture Rock, Miners Castle, Munising falls, and other little falls along the road.  I would go here again

Great campground especially the waterfront sites

We booked rustic site I. It is about a quarter mile walk from the parking, but gives you your own beach site. Water, trash and rest rooms are in main campground. There are 2 shower houses. Wood and kindling are for sale. The little camp office has stickers, hats and fun stuff. We have t mobile and had cell service and site has wifi.
If you are in main camp there is electric available. If you go rustic, be prepared to walk your trash and food out before turning in. Also, we brought a luggable loo and pop up change tent because I was not walking a quarter mile to the bathroom at 2am.  View is gorgeous and if right on the lake is more important than convenience, this is your spot.

Great location, camp on Lake Superior

A beautiful beach with clean showers and bathrooms. Spacious sites although could have been more level along the road side. A bit loud on the road side, and the campground roads could use some maintenance, but I’d definitely stay if I was in the area again.

Nice RV park but just not our cup of tea. Sites are really open to one another although the lakefront sites have great beach access to Lake Superior. Even at the “rustic tent sites”, you will see your neighbor clearly. Bathrooms and showers were clean, friendly staff. Just wish there were more trees or sites were spread out more

We were fortunate to get one of the full hookup sites on the waterfront.  Our two boys loved playing on the beach.  We enjoyed the sunsets and overall view

Incredible site right in the water 

Vibe: Backyard gathering in a messy but functional camp redeemed by a spectacular setting. 

  

Cleanliness: Below average. 

  

Facilities: Restrooms, showers and trash collection are undersized for the size of camp. 

  

General spots: Some great spots by the lake. Many others might as well been at a fairgrounds parking lot. Not generously sized, close together and minimal privacy. 

  

Our site: 80. Just a hop across a creek to be on the beach. Creek was pretty stagnant and weedy, so bugs were heavier here than the rest of the camp(which didn’t seem bad). Tucked away in the corner so not much traffic. After first 15 feet, it slopes toward the lake enough to need leveling. 

  

Noise: Active with families, but not loud. Road noise. 

  

Cell signal(Verizon): 2 bars. Good enough for video chat. 

  

Other: Put this campsite 1 mile inland and its rating would go way down. They fill up because of the setting, so they don’t put as much effort into the camp as they should. Trash dumpsters were overflowing and at first I thought it was excusable because it was a Sunday night, but they easily have the space to add dumpsters.

Needs improvements, but stays busy so they don't seem to mind

Large campground with many sites on lake.  Sites are somewhat large in size, moderately spaced apart.  Shower facilities that were very clean.  Ice and firewood available.

Clean, beautiful view of Lake Superior and great location to explore Pictured Rocks and the iconic MI waterfalls all the way to Grand Marias. 

Great location and view!

We car camped here at site 9 right next to the lake! It made for a stunning night before we headed out to Grand Island for a few days. Staff was extremely nice. The facilities were very clean, and we were thankful for them. There is also firewood for purchase.

Very clean and friendly staff. AMAZING views of Lake Superior just steps away from the camp site. Spots don't stay empty for long. The RV park stays full

Annual visit

Friendly staff, gorgeous sunsets from Lake Superior's shore, water + electric sites, dump station, hot showers. There are some tent sites along the shore that look amazing. Next time we'll be paddling to Grand Island. We stayed at the end of September.

What's not to like?

Love the Munising area. Lots of waterfalls and close to pictured rocks. Nice facilities and great location. Fire ring is provided at each campsite and was clean of debris. Sites were large and easy to back into; big rig friendly! wood is available for purchase.
