The mainland portion of the park offers over 100 campsites, 49 of which are equipped with electrical hook-ups to accommodate tent or vehicle campers.

Each site is equipped with a camping pad, picnic table, fire ring and lantern post.

Three centrally located bath houses have hot water showers and flush toilets.

Campers must arrive and check-in before quiet hours start at 10:00 PM. Campers who arrive after 10:00 PM will not be allowed into the park and will have to find other accommodations for the night.

Backcountry Campsites and Permits
The primitive backcountry campsites are equipped with tent platforms and boat landings. C​ampers at these environmentally sensitive sites must obtain a permit from the park and strictly follow Leave No Trace principles. Call the park at 410-968-1565 for more information about backcountry permits.

Youth Group Camping
The park offers a 30 person youth group site, featuring a shaded but open area with a stone fire pit, group grill and picnic tables.

Full Service Cabins
Four rustic waterfront cabins are available for rent year round. Each sleeps six persons and is equipped with three bedrooms, a common area, kitchen, bathroom, a screened porch with picnic table, air conditioning, heat, gas log fireplaces (available seasonally), an outdoor fire ring with a grill, a picnic table and ample parking. Cabin kitchens are equipped with an oven, stove, refrigerator, coffee pot, microwave, basic cooking utensils and service for six. Renters must provide their own towels and bedding (linens, pillows and blankets).

Camper Cabins
Four waterfront camper cabins that sleep four are available during the camping season. Each has a capacity of four persons and is equipped with air conditioning and heat, electric, a table and chairs, either two sets of bunk beds or a double bed and a set of bunk beds, ceiling fan, a picnic table and fire ring. Occupants must use the campground bathhouses.

Located just outside of Crisfield on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Janes Island State P​ark offers visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy the beauty and bounty of the Chesapeake Bay. Within the mainland portion of the park are the campground, with 103 campsites, rental cabins, a lodge, picnic areas, pavilions, and the boat ramp and marina. 

The island portion of the park – Janes Island – includes over 2,900 acres of saltmarsh, over 30 miles of water trails and miles of isolated pristine beaches. Although people have harvested the resources of the island for thousands of years, today the island is wild and seemingly untouched. A haven for birds, fish, crabs and other saltmarsh dwellers, Janes Island provides visitors a tranquil setting to explore the wildlife of the bay while enjoying the expansive vistas and stunningly beautiful sunsets. Whether fishing or crabbing, motor boating, paddling or simply relaxing, visitors to Janes Island will experience a world still ruled by the weather, the tides and the wildlife that first drew people to this very special place.

The park offers ADA accessible restrooms and four accessible campsites. The park store, nature center, picnic pavilions, recreation area, fish cleaning station and dock area are also ADA accessible.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

There is no fee to enter the park for day-use, but there is a fee to use the park's boat ramp. ($7.00 for Maryland residents. $9.00 for out of state residents.)

Janes Island State Park Campground

We stayed at this campground August 2017\. We had a 20’ travel trailer, 2 kids, and 2 boxers. This was a great place. Very quiet. Checkin was easy. You have to go into the store to check in. Our site was right across the the bathroom facilities which was great for us because it’s difficult to shower in a 20’ rv. So we utilized the bathroom facilities a lot. The bathrooms were clean and had 3 shower/ dressing areas along with several toilets and sinks on the other side.

We were not bayside but close enough to walk. Some site are bayside and right on the water. The sites are big enough, have a picnic table, and a fire pit/cooking area. We also had full hookup.

There is a lookout tower which my kids enjoyed climbing.

there is not much here or in town. We did find a food store in town but bring stuff with you because it took some searching to find it.

events of the weekend. We bought inflatable kayaks and paddles out to James island. This was a lot of fun. James island has a beach area so we paddles right up and explored the island. Not much to do but it was fun exploring.

Also, the rangers run events for the kids. On Saturday they had a crabbing contest. They educated the kids about different kids of crabs and then gave them crabbing line with chicken on it and let them crab. They took measurements of the crabs and awarded a certificate to the person that caught the largest crab. Everyone enjoyed this. There were a lot of kids there too and it made a good fun competition. Everyone got excite to see when someone caught a crab.

Overall this was a fun quiet weekend and we enjoyed ourselves.

Loved this place

We had a great time. The campground is very nice. Lots of wildlife to watch. They offer kayak rentals, we really enjoyed kayaking through the water trails. You can also kayak out to a sand beach. You can go crabbing for blue crabs. We would definitely recommend staying here.

On the Bay, a few electric sites. Clean restrooms. Nice dock for boats and great kayak trails. Biking is fun around the old towns nearby.

Loved this campground!!

Beautiful campground.  The bathrooms were nicer than my bath at home and sparkling clean.  Staff was amazingly pleasant and helpful.  The campground was quiet and peaceful.  The park had so much to explore, kayaking, hiking, fishing, beach access via kayak; we could have easily spent a week there.  I was worried before arriving because other reviewers complained about the bugs.  We were there mid July and the bugs weren’t bad at all, a few mosquito bites, and the biting flies were kept at bay by cutter.  We will definitely be back.  The kayaking alone is worth the trip. 

A new favorite camping spot

The weekend we camped here was beautiful! If you enjoy kayaking/canoeing this is the place for you. They have 30 miles worth of different water trails. 
The island has miles of private beaches that you can have to yourself. The camp offers kayak and canoe rentals if you don't have your own. 
I would recommend reserving your sight early on if you want a water front spot. We called the week of and got a waterfront spot but it was not private and located out by the marina.

Half of the sites are dry camping other half are electric only. Dogs are allowed at half the sites. They had the cleanest nicest showers we have ever seen at a campground. Fantastic camp store with long hours. Camper size Old Bay was there!! Ice cream, firewood, cake, and a new pontoon service to the island beach. It was $12 for 2 hours. Takes you to beach and swimming but no amenities so plan well. We loved it. There are fire road trails which are more like paths through the woods. Very flat. Be sure to wear DEET as the chiggers and ticks are crazy hungry there. There is a canal that borders the campground where the breeze comes through nicely and has great sunset view. Dump station was nice, but dumpsters are along ways from the camp spots. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Our favorite part by far was the pontoon over to the island to swim at the beach especially because you can bring your dog and ours had a blast

Just got back from here for our first trip of 2020. The camp store and boat rentals were closed and the check in was kind of confusing due to arriving the first day the park opened due to Covid-19, but I flagged down an employee who was very helpful. We weren’t a huge fan of our site, site 50, because it was difficult to get into and it backed up to the marina. We basically had to do a u-turn in reverse with our 30ft travel trailer which wasn’t the easiest to get in the site. But, if you have a tent or a smaller RV and want to walk to the marina the it’s a great site. Overall we had a great time and will definitely be back in the future, just at a different site.

Great Park

We tent-camped for two nights in Loop C, site 87 in early June 2020.

This is a beautiful state park in water-lover’s paradise on the eastern shore of Maryland.  The entire campground was very well kept and run, even though we were there just as it was reopening from the COVID crisis.  There are three loops for camping.  “A” loop has very public sites with roads, parking, day use areas (playground, store, observation tower, ramps and docks) all nearby.  “B” loop is fully electrified so popular with trailers and RVs, though the sites are nice and very usable for tents as well.  “C” loop is mostly without power so has a higher concentration of tent camps.  The park store and visitor’s centers were both closed, and check-in was by telephone from our site (cell service was fine).  Camp staff was excellent.

The sites are vary in size but are a bit tight, especially since they ask you to keep everything on the gravel area.  We have a fairly large tent (REI Kingdom 6) and, combined with the van, it would have been a tight fit to get another tent or car into the site.  On the loop near the water (where we were), the sites were also somewhat close together.  It gives the campground a bit of a social feel since you’re all fairly close, but the 10 PM quiet time was well-respected and there was more of a family than a party atmosphere.  The sites on the roads leading into the loops have a bit more isolation.  Overall, it still had a peaceful feel and the full-height trees provide ample shade.  Bathrooms were well-kept with good, private shower facilities and there was easy access to fresh water spigots sprinkled throughout the sites.  I read a lot about bugs here and we didn’t find them very bad.  At sunset near the water, the biting flies could be annoying but they didn’t seem to affect the sites which are wooded (like ours).  I suspect as summer progresses, they get worse.

The park has well-marked kayaking trails.  Normally you can rent kayaks from the park, but since they were closed, we used Kayak Crisfield.  Kayak Crisfield met us at the marina with all the paperwork and made it an easy alternative.  At the end of the day, we just left the boats there and called to let them know.  The water trails have a big variety from large channels to narrow marsh routes and bird watching is excellent.  There’s a beach that’s an easy 1-mile paddle away with lots of room to spread out and have a private space to yourself.  Allow yourself some time to explore since it is easy to accidentally head down dead-end channels, but the kids loved that part of it.  You’re also in a part of Maryland with many other nearby boating spots and if you bring your own boats, you won’t get bored in a week.

Overall, this is a great campground where we’ll return.  I knocked one star off just for the size and closeness of the sites but the rest of the experience was fantastic.

Kayaker’s Delight

Beautiful campground! The pine trees provide a great canopy. Many of the campsites abut the canal. The bathhouse is clean and modern. A few negatives: The camp store’s firewood was the worst. And the campsites were too close and that cause an issue because there were a few loud campers that caused me to give this place a 4 versus 5. If you love to kayak, this is the place for you. The water trails provide hours of exploration.

Janes Island State Park is a wonderful place for scenic state park camping.  There are spots for tents and rvs.  There is a marina and kayak trails. They have both primitive and full service cabins. 

There are 3 camping loops.  Loop B is the all electric loop with plenty of large sites that can accommodate bigger rigs.  This is where my family stayed.  We were directly across the street from the water and the views were amazing.  Loop B is pet friendly, and all of the owners there were very responsible.

Due to the high water table, there were plenty of mosquitoes but with the breeze they were held largely in check.  

My family and I cannot wait to go back.

Exactly what I look for

First time here, won't be our last!!  Not a lot of hiking trails in the park, but there are plenty nearby. Spaces were nice...not too close to each other and oriented so you are staring into your neighbors site all the time when sitting at the very big nice picnic table and firepit. The bathrooms are nice than most. They have a strenuous cleaning schedule due to Covid so the bathrooms are CLEAN!!  Nice Food Lion grocery store about 1 mile away. Restaurants in nearby Crisfield, MD. Will come back in warmer weather to take advantage of the many kayak/canoe trails. Some sites are waterfront. Nice deck and boat/kayak launch. Hosts very friendly. Park clean, very quiet.

Hidden Gem!

We’re here for opening weekend and aside from the unseasonable cold this campground is nicely perfect for us. Sites are nicely sized and spaced out. Bathhouse is in very nice condition. Looking forward to the weekend warming up.

In the words of novelist John Barth, “Neither dry land nor sea, ... the Chesapeake is neither salt nor fresh; emblematic equally of stagnation and regeneration, of death and new life...” Barth then goes on to describe the slow immersion of these marshlands under the rising tides wrought by global warming.

Is this in-between land that special? I see other places affected by climate change and other coastal parks exhibiting some stagnation and regeneration, but the stagnation stands out here as no other place in memory. That could be depressing if you don’t perceive the regeneration part.

The neighbors in the campsite next to us said they came here because  places like this (and everyone else) are doomed. It is hard to escape that thought while here. 

With our site near the water, the first wondrous experience was a beautiful sunset, the like you will have a hard time finding in most of the Eastern U.S. To see more of the island, the observation tower near the camp store is about 25 feet above ground level. Better yet, try one of the many paddling trails in and around the island.
 
 
The fire roads laid out in a grid along with all the mucky black drainage ditches are eyesores typifying the stagnation Barth wrote about, but I learned some plant lore and met a very showy holly tree while hiking the whitetail trail.

The island with birds of many feather is a great show. Sitting with binoculars on the campground side, I saw a snowy egret, a white heron, and a great blue heron all within the circle of my binocular viewing angle. Many others caught my eye while in flight. Be sure to bring binoculars! 

Our departure is scheduled for a sunny day. After many colorful sunsets hinting at dissolution, the brightness of a new dawn will end this trip with a message of hope.



In the Heart of the Chesapeake 

Great kayaking to Jane's Island. Very clean bathrooms. Very family oriented. Rangers are nice and so are the camp hosts. Nice trails, wide and easy. Will definitely try to return. Only draw back is no water or sewer hook ups, but dump and water station is clean and close.

We chose Janes Island for our first camping trip as a couple and we had such a beautiful weekend! 

The camp store employee was incredibly sweet and helpful. It was well stocked and even had a little wildlife museum. 

Our tent site was away the main loops, which was great for privacy and quiet, close to the bath house, and faced the canal. Made for a gorgeous sunset!! 

The bugs, mostly flies, were a bit much and I would expect that to be worse as the temperatures increases. I think that this is the experience of waterfront camping. 

Overall, the park is beautiful, peaceful and clean. We really enjoyed our time here and will come back!
