Established in 1931, Vogel State Park stands today as one of Georgia’s oldest state parks. Over 223 acres of land make up this beautiful reserve, known for its extensive selection of trails and crisp, brightly colored forests. Located at the base of Blood Mountain in the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest, Vogel is especially popular during the fall thanks to the blanket of colors that transform the park’s trees and wildlife. In fact, Red, yellow, and gold leaves cover the landscape of the surrounding hills, mountains, and valleys for months at a time. 

This park is also full of history, with many facilities being constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. To learn about the “CCC” boys and their incredible story, check out the park museum open seasonally. 

The North Georgia Mountains around Vogel were also linked to native tribes for generations before European settlement, and the adventurous individual can still find remnants from their time on this land via the surrounding trails. In fact, there are a variety of trails available, including the 4 mile Bear Hair Gap loop. Bear Hair is easier than other hikes in the area and leads to the Trahlyta Falls, a peaceful set of waterfalls perfect for photo opportunities or a small picnic. More seasoned hikers can undergo the challenging 13-mile Coosa Backcountry Trail, which showcases the regional wildlife and various water features throughout. 

If hiking isn’t your thing, the park’s 22 acre lake is open to non-motorized boats, and during summer, visitors can cool off at the mountain-view beach. Enjoy paddleboarding or kayaking while your family watches you from shore, then finish up with a round of mini golf at the park’s 18 hole course. 

For overnight accommodations, 34 Cottages, 85 campsites and 18 primitive backpacking sites are all available for a reasonable rate.There is also a pioneer campground available for rent, which is perfect for groups and allows campers to see how past settlers would have lived. During your stay, there are 4 picnic shelters available for use, as well as a group shelter and a lake pavilion, which seat 90 and 100 guests respectively. There is also a general store open year round, with Wifi open at the visitor center.

Vogel State Park Campground

Vogel state park was an amzing experience. Everything from the drive up the windy roads and hairpin turns to the campsites being located close to some awesome trail heads. especially the trail to Blood Mountain. There’s plenty of activities like canoeing, swimming, hiking, biking. Hot showers, flushable toilets, snack vendors, and everything you would need is all accessable. All items are reasonably priced as well. Beautiful scenery on the mountains and durig the summer the weather is much cooler up there. Great place to visit! I recommend it for solo, couples, family, pretty much everyone.

This is an amazing place to relax and let loose while outdoors. You can camp out while fishing to your hearts content. Recommend this park to fishermen!

Great Fishing Spot!

We enjoyed a challenging 11-mile hike up and over 3 mountains from trail heads inside the park. There are shorter hikes that start here as well. My 9-year old loved exploring the mushrooms and nature growing in the very wooded campsites. The campsites are large with driveways, 1-2 tent pads, picnic table, fire ring and lantern poles at each site. The campground was very busy and you could see your neighbors around you. But this also means there are more conveniences like running water and hot showers. The campground also has a mini-gold course, lake and gift shop. There were lots of kids riding bikes and dogs are allowed, so while this so not a serene site, it's definitely great for families and groups that want to hang out!

Beautiful hiking, large campsites

Vogel State Park is hands down one of the nicest parks in Georgia. It has great hiking trails for every level of hiker, and a very beautiful lake that's great for fishing and paddling. They have brand new, beautiful, modern-looking cabins if you're more interested in sleeping inside, put-put golf, and a nice quiet scenic campground. It's located about an hour north of Gainesville Ga and is well located if you want to make day trips to Helen, Dahlonega, Blairsville and Blueridge. 
Our walk-in campsite was right on the creek. It had a good size tent pad that fit 2 tents with no problems. It was good walking distance from the rest of the park and far enough from other campsites that it felt nice and private. There are plenty of trees perfect for hanging hammocks. We had a very nice restful stay there and look forward to staying there again. 

Great Campground nestled in northeast GA

We spent a week here in Feb. 2017 it was a bit chilly and quiet.  The sites and trails are very well maintained, all facilities were clean and the park rangers are super friendly.  They also offer cabin and cottages for those who do not camp.  There is a playground area as well as putt putt golf and the best part they are dog friendly!  During the summer they offer a beach area with peddle boats and kayaks.  The lake is 22 acres with trails that go along the lake.  As of right now Vogel is on my top 10 list and we will certainly be returning.  

GREAT STATE PARK/RECREATION AREA

My friend and I took an overnight backpacking trip here.  The hiking trails are nice and there is a nice lake at the parking lot. 

Great Hiking

I visit at least once a year and stay either so I can day hike the area trails (AT and others) or at the end of a section hike so I can have a nice shower, wash clothing, and just relax.

I absolutely love Vogel. I wish the backcountry loop was spread out more - you can see your neighbor - but the hot showers and warm bath house during the winter is a trade off I'll take. 

We spent our three-day Memorial Day weekend at Vogel State Park. We camped in a tent. The staff is very friendly/helpful and the facilities are pristine. Our campsite (#70) was located directly across from the bathhouse and was huge for a "tent" site...we have a 17'x9' tent and the site accommodated our tent, two vehicles and a 5'x8' utility trailer with room to spare! The park has beautiful views and is only a short distance from Brasstown Bald and Helton Creek Falls. The park store had most of the supplies that you would need for camping but, if not, there is a Dollar General located just a few miles away. This is our favorite of the GA State Parks so far!! There are kayak, pedal boat, paddle board and bicycle rentals available!

Beautiful Park

While it’s often a bit of a shock to come to such a developed and highly manicured campground after having spent some time in the woods without all the amenities, it sure was nice to get a hot shower in a heated bathroom! Vogel State Park was perfectly situated along Hwy 19 in the north Georgia mountains for an easy spot for the night.

In early March, this state park was extremely quiet, especially in the loop designed specifically for tents, vans, and small rigs like ours. Each site has been lined with fresh gravel, a firepit, picnic table, utility pole, electricity and water. A few of the sites are pull-through and some are conjoined with another site, making it a perfect place for families/groups wanting to have close-by sites. Throughout the park, there are plenty of sites for large RV’s, as well as some walk-in sites for tents.

The bathrooms are clean, with wheelchair accessibility in one shower and toilet, but the one near our site doesn’t have a wheelchair ramp to the bathroom itself. 

In addition to the campsites, this park offers a small lake, hiking trails, playgrounds, miniature golf, and some modern, fully-equipped cabins complete with a small deck, grill, and picnic table.  The closest town is Blairsville, GA, about a 10 mile drive with most of the basics you need.

Perfect for Families & Groups

This park is a go-to for us. There is lots to do whether it be hiking to the waterfall, swimming in the lake, or renting a paddleboard or kayak. It’s a beautiful place!

loved the campground. Had a bit of a time getting my popup on the site....lots of trees, but once in we loved it.  

Awesome state park

This campground has a nice old school feel with the old buildings. The mountain setting and lake offer nice shade with swimming and fishing and good trails. The cabins appeared to be in the process of upgrades while we were there.

Waterfalls and a lake

We camped at the pioneer camp site by the creek. It has a pavilion and a creek very close by. It was a hike in but it was simply amazing! Highly recommend!!

Tranquilic and peaceful

This campground has a beautiful mountain view behind the lake. There is also a beautiful waterfall to hike to. They offer paddle boards, kayaks, peddleboats, and aqua cycles to rent for the lake. They also offer bike rentals and putt putt course. There is a general store in the visitor center. There are hiking trails for the extreme hikers too that go into the mountains on the Appalachian trail. The campsites are pretty close together, but we had a premier spot that was larger and a pull-through. The bathrooms were clean, but old and dated. This is one of the oldest campgrounds in the state. They offer cottages and cabins for rent. There was a dog parking loud constantly that was so annoying. We have dogs and many people camping there did, but our dogs don’t bark constantly. I would say this isn’t the campgrounds fault, but this irresponsible pet owner was literally between two campground hosts. Had it continued late at night past 10pm we would have had to call someone. It’s hard to relax by the fire with a dog barking constantly. The campground needs to add more signage. People are driving around looking lost. Here’s the problem ... if you have an RV or camper and park in the RV spaces when you pull out on the far end to the right you cannot see the directional signs. We pulled to the right and it was a dead end at the cottages. It was very stressful trying to the turn around hauling a camper. People in the cottages told us we weren’t the only ones to pull down there and have to turn around. Lots of cars were turning around down there, but with a camper it’s a nightmare. I paid extra for a pullthrough only to deal with that nonsense at the start. I suggest adding a sign at the far right exit of parking lot that has directions. Add another sign that says “Cabins only - Dead End”. If our camper had been an inch longer we couldn’t have turned around. Not impressed by the swimming area at the beach.

Beautiful views

You can drive to plenty of mountain overlooks and waterfalls in the area including in the park. Try Helton creek falls within 2 miles of the park Ask what is in the area. We were there 4 days and didn't see it all but kept busy

Also turn left out of the park and visit (free) the first place on the left called Byron Reese Farm and Heritage Center for a great free map of area attractions(Reese was a famous poet and author and this was his home and farm with live animals). There is plenty to do in the park but you are within driving distance of :Helton Creek Falls..Desoto Falls..Brasstown Bald..UnicoiState Park(which contains. Anna Ruby Falls &amp;Barvarian Village of Helen)and 12 other great places.

It is one if the prettiest parks in Georgia. There is so much to do. 
Waterfalls, the Appalachian Trail, large lake, swimming beach.
An abundance of camp sites, many with full hookup. 

Hiking -Fishing-Boating -Swimming 

We have tent camped on site #35 which is right beside a small running creek and close to the bathhouse. We really enjoyed Vogel and are already are booked to return in October! Best sites are on Wolf Creek that back right up to it. It is so relaxing to hear the creek running by! The hike around the lake is an easy one and make sure you go down a little ways to the waterfall!

Beautiful state park!

Beautiful State Park with roomy shaded sites, many of which are creekside. A large lake for fishing and swimming is at the front of the park and it offers canoe and paddle boat rentals. Lots to do on-site such as walking trails, hiking and fishing, playgrounds and a Conservation Corps museum. Trahlyta Falls is an easy walking path, and the park also offers nice cabin rentals. There are no sewer hook-up, but it does have an easy access dump station.

Been going since I was a kid, now I get to take my kids! Tons to do, tons of fun!

Fun for kids 

Vogel State Park is one of the first State Parks of Georgia, built by the CCC. There is a great CCC museum on the site. I have been going here since I was in diapers, and it never gets old. There is great hiking and water activities, and lots of nearby attractions.

One of the First & Best

We are here in October and the leaves are gorgeous as well as the park and camping facilities. Great hikes with fun little towns nearby. Next time we’ll stay longer so we can explore more.

Arriving in the dark for the first visit, is a bit confusing in the labyrinth of roadways(some One-way) throughout the campground...but for the normal camper it would be no problem. 

  

After the visitor center is closed, a list of available sites are posted and a sign-in Sheet for the site you choose. 

  

After experiencing 12 hours of straight rain(9-9)...the sun broke through for a beautiful fall mountain day. The campground sits at 2500 ft.so it was comfortably cool.

  

Campsite are spaced reasonably, but with tall, mature trees, although you do see and hear your neighbors. In fact, you see and hear your neighbors half a dozen sites away. During my visit, it was almost entirely retirees from out of state...so other than a random yappy terrier, it was quiet. 

  

There are several loops offering more or less “privacy.” Had I known about the incredible tent “walk-in” sites before arrival, I would’ve stayed there. They are tucked away on their own loop on a wooded hillside. 

  

Bathroom/showerhouses are strategically located in each loop. They are modern, bright, well-stocked and clean! Also provided are individual “family/unisex” bathroom/shower facilities. 

  

Numerous very nice cabins are available for rental, from efficiency to 3 bedroom interspersed throughout the park...and appear moderately priced. 

  

Available State Park Activites: Two separate children’s playgrounds exist, not too far from one another. One near a small kids ball field...the other near a very nice volleyball court, permanent corn hole pit and state of the art outdoor exercise machine area...the likes of which I have never-ever seen. Two 9 hole miniature golf courses next to the visitor center are reminiscent of the old Putt-Putt courses of yesteryear. Bicycle and boat rentals are available during summer months for reasonable hourly, half and full day rates. A swimming beach also exists on the park’s 22 acre picturesque lake.

  

 A gravel walking trail circumnavigates the lake and at the far end, a trail leads down to lovely Trahlyta Falls. If you are a waterfall chaser, this immediate area boasts numerous worthy falls. The closest being the upper and lower Helton Creek Falls. The upper and lower Desoto Falls are 7 miles away in one direction and several in the opposite direction. 

  

Terri Tucker, manager of the visitor store, and her staff are excellent and knowledgeable about not just their park but also the surrounding area and nearby parks. They are pleasant, cheerful and helpful. Additionally, Terri has outfitted this visitor center store about the best I’ve seen in all my years of camping. For a state park visitor center, it has a unique balance of food items, camping comfort foods, park specific knick-knacks, souvenirs, and practical clothing items, along with a fantastic assortment of camping, hiking related necessities. Shoot...they even sell Eno hammocks and slap straps! Did I mention two bookshelves of outdoor books and maps?! For as small as it is, it is masterfully stocked. Well done! 

  

Several creeks meander through the campground, notably Burnett Branch, Wolf Creek...so the rushing water noise is both soothing and assists in drowning out neighborly conversations. 

  

In most advertisements, the phrase “one of the oldest and most beloved state parks” is used and frankly, I see why. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

  

The hiking both from Vogel State Park and nearby are incredible. Take half a day and climb Blood Mountain along the Appalachian Trail. Views from the summit are breathtaking...doing the hike is also a little breathtaking too. It is worth stopping and shopping at Mountain Crossings just a few miles away (turn right out of the park)...you just can't leave the area without buying some souvenirs.

  

I am planning next fall's return already!...I do wish GA state parks were a tad cheaper though.

A delightful surprise!

Took advantage of the 1/2 price camping in August offered by the Georgia State Park System since we had already camped in June &amp; July.  What a beautiful campground.  Lots of trees and 2 streams running through the sites on both sides.  Our site was level with plenty of room on gravel to spread out our floor mat.

  

Beautiful hiking to waterfall and around the lake.  There is a beach for swimming and paddle boats for rent.  We also enjoyed a day trip visiting wineries in the area and having breakfast in Blairsville.  If coming north on 129, there is a sharp hairpin turn into the main entrance of the park.

Another wonderful Georgia State Park!

Spacious campsite, clean, friendly people, the view is fantastic mountain, lake, water falls and lots things to do! Love!!!!!

Definitely come back!!!

Went camping to bring in the new year. It was so cold, but the camp fire helped. A nice and quiet camp ground! When it comes to the tent sites, the “walk in” is short and easy to carry everything to making it really convenient! And there is a bath house right near by that is well lighted for middle of the night trips! The best camp site would have to be camp site B because it’s right along the creek! Can hear is bubbling all day and night! The trails in the park and near by are all well maintained and the water falls are beautiful! Easy hikes for little kiddos if looking for something to do.

New Years 2020

One of the nicest campsites I’ve camped at.  We choose the walk in as the parking was still really close but there are only two of these sites.  The creek runs right next to them and it was so peaceful and beautiful.  The trails along the lake were nice and the dogs enjoyed it.  

Beautiful mountain area with waterfall, creek, and lake.

We had a fantastic time at Vogel. We were a group of 9 in 2 separate sites (82 and 75... 82 was the larger site with a tent pad lower than the site, 75 was the smaller site with tent pad up the stairs). The site we used to “hang out” was 75, which looked much larger in pictures than it was in real life. The measurements are a bit off (says there’s room for a 15ft camper... but my camper is 15ft overall and I had to turn it sideways in order to fit the minivan onto the site). That being said, it was still a fantastic trip. 

Half the bath houses were closed due to COVID-19 (unfortunately that included the one next to site 73...) but the walk to the other bath house wasn’t horrible and it was always pristine. 

The park office had a catalogue hanging by the front door where you could call and order and pay over the phone and they would hand it out the door to you. The only downside is that the line stayed busy, so it took a good bit to get through. 

Everyone was super polite. The grounds were all very clean and the trails were well marked. Didn’t catch any fish, but I’m starting to think that’s user error and not due to any issues at the park. 

There are a handful of sites that back up to the creek (to the point where you can play in it, if you choose) but they book fast. The loop we stayed on had one such site. Pay attention to the park map, as the red loop is for small campers or tents only. 

Overall, everyone had a blast and it was a beautiful park. 

Cell service (T-mobile and Verizon) was spotty at best. We went to the main clubhouse and got on the WiFi to pull up the radar during the storm. 

Rainy but beautiful

Great campground and really taken care of. Been several times with my family and our pop-up camper. We did have a bear encounter on our site, but that was due to not properly storing food during the night. Lesson learned! Took a good bite into my 5-day cooler! 😂

One of my favorites! 

 Beautiful park. It is very nice and clean. They have a gray dump in the campground and regular dump for both gray &amp; black located just outside of the campground. In fact, Lake Winfield Scott (National Forest) sends you to Vogel to dump. See RV Camping Journal for more details. 

Visited Vogel State Park on a short day trip.. Jo

Spent 3 days there.  Very clean and well maintained.  Bathrooms and showers were pristine.  Sites were a bit tight but workable.

Unless you are an expert at backing up into difficult angles - avoid site 26 and 31.  Uphill - a Z angle and incline.  We were 29.5 feet and site was not pleasant experience backing in on blind side and too much pitch at site 26 

Nice state park campground

Having only two nights here left a great impression. One of F D Roosevelt’s  Civilian Conservation Corps masterworks so important to this parks existence that they have a museum on site describing in great detail the transformation of this particular valley. As with all of the Ga. state parks I’ve had the pleasure to visit the campground is immaculate. Lots for the kiddos here with a man made lake and paddle boats and canoes for rent, a miniature golf course, and a creek that runs through the campground that seemed the biggest attraction for a great many of the kids. Hiking trails are exceptional for the adults. We chose a very strenuous trail that delivered on the promise of a beautiful vista looking down on the park and campground. We were there in the last week of July 2019 before Covid so much I describe might be in shutdown mode right now. 

Georgia State Parks Rock!

By far one of the prettiest campground our state has to offer. With tons of hiking trail, a gorgeous lake , paved roads and sparkling clean facilities. We have camped several times , in the camper and tent.

We visited Vogel in April 2021 and it was just as good as I remembered as a child. My grandparents used to bring me here all the time when I was little. Some of my first camping experiences. It’s just as amazing today as it was then. We stayed in the area for small rigs and tents, #79. It was perfect for our camper. Even though we had terrible rain one day, we still made the best of it. I love the charm of the old parks where everything was smaller and seems more natural. The lake, the waterfalls, Blairsville, there is just so much to do up in the mountains.  

Great Childhood Memories 

This is a state park in the north Georgia mountains and is great for cooling off from the Atlanta metro heat of the summer.   The campground is well maintained and the bathhouses are very clean (they have individual ones).  The park has some great hiking trails from easy (lake trail), moderate (Bear Hair Gap), and  hard (Blood Mountain), as well as a lake for paddling, and spacious campsites in the woods. Helton Creek Falls is just up the street, and Brasstown Bald(highest point in Georgia(4,784 ft.) is about 20 minutes away. You can access trailheads for Blood Mountain on the AT from both the park (long at 8+ miles) or drive 5 minutes down the road for a shorter hike at(4.2 miles). Lots of other activities with 15-45 minutes (quaint towns, vineyards, tubing etc).

Nice campground in the north Georgia mountains

It’s a great mountain state park.  Camp sites are clean and easy to access.  The signage to find your campsite is horrible.  Our camp site was 78 and when turning onto the road to the site you come across a sign that says tents, pop ups, and small vehicle campers.  It became extremely confusing as we headed straight in which it took us to a turn around.  Playgrounds were great and very clean.  We ended up walking to the falls and riding the paddle boats.  It is a very crowded park however.  There are a lot of people just there for the day riding bikes and running or training.  It became a little overwhelming with the amount of people that were there just for the day and not camping.  

We did enjoy that our site had an adjoining site which made it nice as we were camping with friends.  

Clean and plenty to do

We stayed one night at Vogel. Our campsite was on a hill but site was level. We could hear the stream but not see it. The bathrooms are toilet / shower combos and we're clean with hot water. It was a bit of a hike to reach some of the bathrooms from some of the sites. 

Huge campground with lots of choices for a private or not so private site

Great experience at Vogel state park. It's a larger campground in the mountains with a lake.  Trout are stocked in the lake from time to time.  I highly recommend 

Great place to camp 

We can’t hold weather (high winds and nearly freezing temps) against the park or the campground, but our visit would have been even better had we been able to enjoy the outdoors more. 

Our campsite #27 was very clean and pretty and private also very level. Downside the fire ring was old and had no grate and for the cold windy evenings having it far away from our camper we were just sitting out there with no wind blocking. (Yes that was only a downside due to our trip’s weather.) It was so windy we couldn’t leave anything out. So many trees would be ideal in the summer providing good shade and again privacy. There is also a small creek just at the edge of the woods which my kids would have loved to explore more with warmer weather. 
Just across the road from site #27 was a cluster of 4 campsites and the end to one of the trails. Continuing up to the road to the loop was the start to another hiking trail. During our stay about 100+ trail racers marched by at 5am but other than that it was pretty calm with just a few hikers now and then. 

We hiked, geocached, played mini golf, played on the playgrounds, got our Jr Ranger Badges and visited nearby Blairsville. Overall a great place and we’d definitely come back especially to enjoy all the other park amenities and areas to enjoy the water.

Great Park & Camping

Scenic with plenty of space between spots. The bathrooms/showers were clean, and they have a laundry room beside the main office. 

My Fav in North GA

I stayed in a walk in tent site right beside the creek and it’s been one of my favorite sites to date. They were doing renovations on a few sites around me but I was never bothered by noise. Very clean showers! 

Quiet and Peaceful

I would have given it 5 stars, but the roads are rather narrow for two way traffic. They have added more RV sites and are up to 90 now. Most have been renovated and are very nice. Our site was almost dead level side to side. We didn't bother blocking at all. Unfortunately it rained the whole time we were there, so we didn't get to explore the campground. 
There are bath houses with laundry facilities. The roads are narrow, but in good repair. The sites are a little closer than I'd like, but positioned well and better than a lot of campground I've seen. You're not on top of your neighbor, but you may not have much privacy either. 
The second Saturday of December they have a tree lighting event, which is why we picked that weekend, but it is packed. We decided to skip it due to the crowd and do our own thing at the camper. 
All said, i look forward to going back on a dry weekend to do some hiking and exploring. 

Beautiful location

We camped here over the weekend in our Tiny Camper. 

 The park is very clean and well maintained. We stayed at campsite 69 and it was very spacious and private with lots of shade. Not every site has as much privacy. It had the usual amenities like a picnic bench, a grill, a firepit, and a lantern pole. The park has a very nice and well stocked visitor center. The staff is extremely friendly. We lost power the first morning and they did everything to help us out and fix the problem. 

There is also a small lake with a beach and a boat rental. You can walk around the lake and visit a waterfall. 

 The area is very beautiful and a hikers paradise. Several trails and waterfalls, for example the AT, are near by. Also stop at the outdoor store at Neels Gap. You'll meet a lot of nice people there. Helen, a tourist town, is within a 30 min drive. You can enjoy some good German food and a cold beer. Another interesting place to see is Brasstown Bald... it's the highest point in Georgia. 

We would camp here anytime again.

Very nice mountain getaway

Absolutely a perfect campground, in a mature forest, with a lake, streams, hiking trails.  Campground looks completely new with gravel pads, FHU, and working WiFi.  $44 a night, seems very reasonable for being so immaculate.  Site 32 seemed to be a top site, private, nearest to the hiking trail.

One of our favorite places 

Vogel State Park was beautiful! Even before all the leaves came out from the trees. The kids had loads of fun playing by the little rivers. Several hikes/trails ranging in difficulty to choose from. There is construction for the new visitor center so parking is limited. Overall, the campground is very well maintained and looks newly refurbished. Roads are smooth but narrow in some places. Definitely worth the drive!
