Situated at 3,640 feet, Black Rock Mountain State Park is Georgia’s highest park and is often home to much cooler weather than the rest of the state, offering relief for much of the year. RVers should check the weather in Clayton, GA before embarking up the steep, winding roads on icy days. With over 50 campsites and 10 cabins in Black Rock Mountain State Park, every kind of camper will find comfort. 

Though the park is named for Black Rock Mountain, it is also home to four other peaks, topping out at over 3,000 ft each. Five different hiking trails can be found within the park, providing access to the diverse wilderness of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Hop on the newest trail, the Norma Campbell Cove Trail, or opt for something more traditional like the Eastern Continental Divide. No matter what you choose, the views are sure to impress.

Black Rock Mountain State Park Campground

Our first trip to this park located just an hour and a half north of Athens on highway 441. We enjoyed Tennessee Rock Trail, Ada-Hi falls, Black Rock Lake, and several great lookouts areas. The Henderson Herd will definitely be back soon!

Georgia Mountains 

We spent a weekend up here in June. It was a lil hot but very peaceful and beautiful. The walk-in camping area is located down a narrow road and has a separate bathhouse. 
The drive-up overlooks are stunning. The hike to the small waterfall was a bit of a disappointment because it was more of a trickle than a waterfall and the hike back was all uphill. Other than that  it was a great stay.   

Great Views

We stayed in the tent only side. We had two tents (9 x 9 and 10 x 12). We had to move our picnic table because our tents wouldn't fit otherwise. It was private and bathrooms always clean.

Beware, the ticks this year are in abundance.... we even brought one back with us... ugh...

Parking is near sites, but you will have to bring you stuff up a short hill. Depending on which site you get, the hill is .05 to .2 of a mile at most.

Beautiful park and comfortable campground 

Lots of hiking trails, 11 miles or so. Great spot for tent camping down below from the RV spots which is nice. Showers bathrooms and water easy access from the tent primitive camping.

Great place but pricey

Would recommend only camping here in a tent or SMALL camper. We took our 26ft tt up in the dark. Read a longer review with photos on the link.

Can’t beat the views

Be prepared for beauty!! The walk in tent sites are the best way to go. Most of these sites are separated from each other to give privacy. Some of the sites are overlooking a town and you're able to see the lights at night. The campground and bathrooms are kept clean and well stocked. The hosts and staff are very friendly and helpful! I liked the place so much that I went back after few weeks.

Blissful Solitude

We camped here this past weekend (7.13.18 - 7.15.18) but my review will start a couple of weeks earlier.

After planning to stay at this campground, and never having visited the park before, we decided to ride up and take a look around.

We are members of the "Friends of GA State Parks" and we renew our membership each year. Our membership comes at a price tag of $105 an includes two annual park passes, two free nights of camping and miscellaneous other perks.

This particular visit, we forgot our annual park pass so we were prepared to pay the $5 daily parking fee. When we arrived at the campground, we stopped by the store and told the staff member that we had reservations to camp, however, we simply wanted to check out the campground and park amenities before we arrived. I asked to purchase a park pass and the gentleman told me that it was not necessary if we were simply driving through and not staying at the park. I thanked him and we were on our way.

After driving through the campground (more on it in a few) we headed towards the other side of the park to the visitor center. As we approached the visitor center, an older gentleman stepped out of the "guard shack" and I told him that we had forgotten our park pass and the other staff member at the building in the campground had told us that we did not need to purchase one to simply drive through. At this point, this particular staff member asked," What guy told you that?" (in a very rude and demeaning manner). I, again, stated that the staff member who was working at the building at the entrance of the campground had told me that and he asked, "Are you talking about the store?" I told him that I was not sure what the building was called, because we had never visited the park before, but it was the only park staff member working at the only building at the entrance of the campground. At this time he became very rude and made a comment to the effect, "Well, if you say that's what he told you then I guess I have to take your word for it!". I told him that we would be more than happy to pay the $5 to drive through the park but he didn't need to be rude. He replied, "Well, YOU don't have to try and guilt me into letting you in for free but you did!" I drove away and we just left the park without exploring any further.

Once we got home, I reached out to the park manager and explained to him the behavior of his staff member and he apologized and said that he would handle it.

Fast forward to our visit…keep in mind that we have camped at NUMEROUS GA state parks over the years and I cannot remember NOT purchasing a Friends Membership…we have checked into many park campgrounds and never been hassled like we were this past weekend!!!

When we arrived (0700hrs) the park had just opened however, there was a sign at the campground store stating that it was closed and the visitor center would open at 0800hrs. We drove through the campground, picked out a site and began unloading our vehicle. At 0800hrs my Wife headed to the campground store to check in and it was still closed so she headed over to the visitor center. The visitor center was open and she told the staff member that we had camping reservations and needed to check in. The staff member (a younger female) asked to see our annual park pass. My wife told her that it was at the campsite (we were in two vehicles) and that we had it but would need one for the second vehicle. The staff member refused to allow my wife to check in until she could see our annual park pass…this has never been an issue at any other state park in GA!!! They always ask if we need a park pass and, if so, they would provide a handwritten pass for the weekend (included in the camping fees).

My Wife drove back to the campsite and told me that they had refused to let her check in until we proved that we have an annual park pass!!! I stopped setting up our equipment and we both drove back to the visitor center (on the other side of the park) with our pass. Once inside, I asked the staff member what exactly it was that she needed and she asked for our annual pass and proof of our Friends of GA state parks membership. I asked her WHY she needed to confirm this to check in and she said, "We need that information so you can check in." Once she saw our annual pass (you know the one that we paid $105 for), she allowed us to check in and (here's the kicker) she gave me HANDWRITTEN park passes and told me NOT to use the annual pass because they "prefer" that we use the handwritten ones instead!!! WHY DID WE HAVE TO SHOW OUR ANNUAL PASS IF WE WEREN'T ALLOWED TO USE IT???? After we satisfied the silly rules of check-in, we were informed of the presence of bears (we already knew that because we camp in the area frequently) and we had to sign an acknowledgment that there are bears in the park! She then provided me ith a copy of "rules" that we had to abide by before we received our paperwork!

The campsites are very close to each other and there is limited room for your equipment…we have a large tent (16x10), a 13x13 screen room, a 10x10 canopy (our kitchen area) a Jeep Wrangler towing a 5x8 trailer that contains our equipment and kayaks. We also had a second passenger car (Honda Accord) with us. While we were unloading our equipment, we parked the Honda in a small grassy area next to our campsite (there is barely enough room for two vehicles to be parked side by side). As we were setting up, the camp host drove up on his golf cart and told us that we could not park outside of the campsite. We asked if it was even during setup and he told us to move the car (very rude)!

So far, our weekend wasn't shaping up to be very enjoyable because of the overbearing staff of the park!!

After we got our site set up we decided to go to the lake and fish from our kayaks…we drove to the park office and asked if we needed a trout stamp to fish (we already have fishing license) in the lake and the same female staff member stated, "No, you do not need a stamp to fish but, if you want to keep any that you catch you'll need one"! Now, I don't know about you but, if we catch trout, we're going to cook them!!! I told her that I needed a trout stamp and she informed me that they did not sell fishing license there!!! She proceeded to tell me where we could drive to purchase a stamp!!! A GA STATE PARK (managed by GA DNR) that doesn't have a GA DNR fishing license…wow!

Luckily, I was able to purchase my trout stamp on my phone so we didn't need to drive to the next closest town to do so!

We fished for a while, paddled around the lake (we didn't catch anything) and returned to our site. As we were getting dinner ready and building our campfire, the SAME CAMP HOST stopped and asked everyone in the general vicinity about a campsite (across from ours) that was set up but had no site marker displayed…we (and everyone else) told him that we did not know who was camping at that site and he instructed us to tell them (when they returned) that they need to display their site marker!!! He gave us an order to enforce the rules of the campground! OVERBEARING!

The evening was fine (other than the three-hour monsoon) and the next morning we ventured out to cook breakfast…as we were eating, the SAME CAMP HOST stopped at our site, acted as if he could not read our site marker and asked, "What is your name? I can't read the paper."

We told him our last name and he looked at some list on a clipboard…he then asked, "Did you check in at the office?" Seriously???? We were there since 0700hrs the day before and he hassled us multiple times but he couldn't remember us being there???? We told him that we had, indeed, checked in the day before and he asked when we were leaving!! We told him that we were leaving on Sunday, 7.15 and he asked if we had signed the paperwork acknowledging the presence of bears!!!! We told him that we had, indeed, signed the bear paperwork and he finally drove away!!! We have never had such "hands-on" camp hosts!

That was the final interaction that we had with the staff (thank goodness) and the rest of our stay was peaceful!!!

NOW, onto the park/campground…the park is beautiful, the campground is great (a bit cramped but nice nonetheless) and the overall experience was great. The campground store (trading post) was closed the entire weekend…we asked why they had not opened it and we were told that they do not have the manpower to open it. If you need anything, you'll need to leave the campground and drive across to the other side of the park to the visitor's center…it is open from 0800hrs until 1700hrs (not very convenient). If you need anything else, you'll have to drive back to Clayton to the local Wally World.

Other than these silly interactions with staff and the lack of a campground store, it really is a nice park…just prepare yourself to have MANY interactions with the staff! I compare this to staying at a hotel and the front desk knocking on your door several times to remind you of when checkout is, etc.!!

The campground is great, the staff...not so much...

We camped here in a tent site with a 1 and 3 year old and the site was flat enough to contain the kids but pretty enough to enjoy for the adults. Good trails and bathrooms.

Nice flat tent spots

We had been to this state park a couple of times before, but not to camp.  The view from the visitor center goes on for a while and is absolutely beautiful.  There are plenty of trails to hike, and a waterfall as well.  Which, as luck would have it, was not all that far from our campsite.  The campsite was a good size, level and had a fire ring and picnic table.  The bathhouse was decent.  Ice and wood was available at the visitor center.  If you check in after 5, the camp host might have some available for purchase.  The host was very helpful and greeted us as we came in, and helped us get settled in.  It was a very enjoyable stay with nice sites, people, and lots of nature to enjoy.

I was driving through this area and found this on one of the many hiking apps I use. I went expecting hiking and found a campground to which I will be happy to return again! I pulled in and immediately was greeted at the campground by the host who was wonderful. We chatted about travel and places to go not just her in Georgia but also around the United States. He was well educated about the park and surroundings but also about travel trailers and such so the discussion was awesome.

From there I drove the campsite and checked it out finding a great place that was pretty even and secluded. I loved the facilities which were well shaded and very affordable. The bathrooms were very well maintained and as I was there I noticed the constant upkeep of staff at work trying to provide an even better experience.

The campground is located just beside the ADA-Hi trail which is a waterfall trail running down the side of a very steeply graded mountain. This trail isn't for the faint of heart if you don't like stairs. It is well maintained and even but does have about 15 flights of stairs which will get your heart pumping.

The visitor center and gift shop is only a short distance by walk or drive and there is a path directly to there if you want to again navigate the steep incline.

Keep in mind this is the highest peak in Georgia so everything is on an incline it seems.

Park admission to any Georgia park for day use is $5 and there are honor stations everywhere or a booth as you enter the main entrance. All in all well worth the price!!!

TIPS:

*   Stop off in Clayton before coming up the hill there area a lot of great stores there for gathering supplies and also a lot of interesting historic stops in town.
*   Don't miss the lake trail when here. It is a bit removed from the campground and you will need to drive to get there or take one of the long hikes but it is beautiful especially on a slightly overcast day like the one I was there. Mountain lakes are amazing!!

Great Views, Great Staff, Great Hiking

The hike was a little more intense than I thought it would be. We took the shorter more direct trail and I definitely recommend taking that one, setting up camp, and then exploring more. Sunsets and sunrises over the lookout points were gorgeous and absolutely worth the trip.

Good and spacious. Depending of what sites you choose some have water and electricity.. there is a store that sells wood and a diversity of items in case you forgot something (opens until 8). Good trails and views! Well marked so you don’t get lost.

This campsite was awesome. We stayed at hike in tent site A and had a great time. The view was beautiful and the staff was very helpful. All the trails here are very nice too.

Beautiful Mountain campground

The highest state park in Georgia has two general camping sections with power and water (and free cable if you're so inclined to hook up to watch TV).

Some of the sites are small ish, and since this is literally on the top of a beautiful mountain, the sites are close in proximity to each other.

The standard State Park bathrooms and showers are available.

In the summer when there are leaves and green on all the trees, it's breathtaking with the views. Once the leaves fall off, it's a bit spooky (my interpretation) and can get windy without the leaves.

Nice site

The scenery of campsite was beautiful and from our campsite the bathroom was very accessible. The bathroom itself was clean and even had heaters in it due to the low temperatures overnight. It was a nice surprise that the bathroom area also had washer/dryers for those staying for a bit longer but unfortunately didn’t have a spot for one to wash their dishes. Each campsite really had a nice view but because this camping area was in the mountains the sites seemed stacked on top of each other and didn’t really give you much privacy. There was a small lookout accessible a short walk from the campground which overlooked the mountains and gave you an amazing view but beyond that the rest of the trails were not accessible on foot and required a short drive.

Fall Wonderland

We stayed at this park in July 2019. While it was super hot at the bottom of the mountain (in Clayton GA—visit Wander North Georgia while you’re in the area!), it was nice and cool at the campground. We even had to wear sweatshirts in the mornings!

We stayed at site 29, which was at the “top” of the back section (essentially looking down on the other sites). Bath house was about 50 steps downhill to get to, 5,000 steps uphill to get back from, but always very clean and well stocked with great water pressure. 

The road going up to the campground is narrow and winding and certainly not for the faint of heart. The road going back down seems even narrower and more winding (if that’s possible) so make sure your vehicle can handle it. We were in 1st or 2nd gear the whole way down. 

The sites are somewhat narrow, set up as a staircase, and most are 90 degrees from the single lane road. Most are going to be a challenge to get into if you have anything of any substantial length. We camped with a teardrop and a tent and had no issues. One site across from the bathrooms is reaaaaaally long (and narrow), and often the first one booked since it puts you in the woods off by yourself. All sites have measurements on ReserveAmerica, which we found to be pretty accurate. 

Now... the views are where it’s at. At the welcome center, on the trails, day or night, they are absolutely breathtaking. We watched sunset at the campground overlook and were blown away. The lake was just as beautiful, just be aware that there are no restrooms nearby so you’ll have to drive a good ways for one. 

Stunning and gorgeous

We spent two nights here car camping. The temperature was in the 50’s in June at night. Perfect car camping weather. The bath house and shower was clean. Can’t wait to go back.

Perfect getaway

love camping here! It’s quiet and campsites are dispersed so you do have that privacy. You can do walk in camp sites or trailers with power/water. There’s a beautiful lake, a waterfall, and a gorgeous view. You can literally hit everything at one park! We needed more firewood and were able to drive to ingles less than 8 minutes away but you wouldn’t know that being up on the mountain. I hope soon I can come try the backcountry camping and hike in. I hiked by a couple of the campsites and they seemed very inviting.

Always a great stay

We camped here a few months back with our neighbors. It was our very first camping trip and it did not disappoint! The views were serene The hike was wonderful! We have children ranging from two years of age to five years of age and they made the full hike! The reservoir was beautiful! The site was spacious even with two tents and two vehicles. The bathrooms were clean and kept up. We definitely made some memories here!! I can’t wait to go back!

Great For All Ages

This camp ground is gorgeous.  The bathrooms may be the cleanest of any state park I've been to. The views are incredible all over.  We stayed at site 40. Words of advice: site 37 shares a driveway with 38. If you book 38, you won't be able to get out if there's someone in site 37. Very odd. Also, 39 and 40 share a driveway entry, then they fork into their own campgrounds. Site 40 was perfect for us in our pop up. Maybe one of the best views of any camp site at the park. However if you pull anything bigger than a small trailer, don't even try 39, and 40 would be extremely difficult as well. We ended up without a neighbor at 39 because the gorgeous 5th wheel that showed up was by far too large to maneuver into the site. I loved it there. Highly recommend. Oh, and I can't forget to mention how extremely friendly the staff was. Enjoy your trip!

Beautiful

Arrived for a 3-night tent stay. Check in was easy. There's a trading post at the campground and a store at the visitors center. Both sell firewood. The road up is winding and narrow. The sites are level and bedded with fine gravel. It's a terraced camp ground with decent separation between sites. Grabbed #25, about 75 yards from the restrooms down the hill. Breathtaking views! It's a great park with awesome cell phone reception. No bear sightings though!

On top of the world, tricky road up

We stayed in one of the tent-only, walk-in sites. This was our first (and so far, only) walk-in tent camping experience as a family. I gotta say - there were challenges.  They weren't unexpected, but still... It should go without saying but nothing here is flat. And after heavy rains some of the trails are not in the best of shape, quite rutted and muddy. So lugging a ton of gear up into the woods was a challenge. It was only 50ish yards, but it was not an easy 50ish yards. So setup and tear down was not the most fun part of the trip. Next time we'll pack lighter for this sort of camping.  
  
However, with that out of the way, we had zero other complaints about our time here. Once we got to our site, it was awesome. The pad was in great shape, flat, clean and plenty large enough for our 9-person tent and all our gear. Other campsites could barely be seen through the woods so it felt very private and secluded.  The bathhouse was good, clean and in good shape. And the setting was amazing.  
  
While here we also hiked a few trails.  The Tennessee Rock trail seems to be the most popular, but let me warn you -- it was NOT as easy as we expected. My youngest kid and my wife turned around and went back. I and my older kids, along with the dog, completed the hike, but it was challenging. Its narrow and very slippery in spots, with more elevation changes than you expect. I mean its not the sort of hike you need to prepare for and pack for the day, but at least have proper footwear and some water with you. And to be honest, if you're going for the mountain views, skip it. The best views in the whole park, by far, are accessible from the roadside, especially at the visitor's center.   
  
Overall though, we thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful park and will definitely camp here again!

Beautiful mountain setting!

I camped here with a friend and the dogs. 
The road is a steep grade up to the campground. There are several overlooks on the way.
The campsites have a firepit, picnic bench - and table, and a lantern pole. Some of the sites were not very private and more open without shade. We were in number 15 and it was in our opinion the best one. Trees and bushes on 3 sides. 
The bathroom was very clean and well maintained. The campground has a little trading post at the entrance. Unfortunately it was closed on the weekend. You could still pick up firewood. 
It was walking distance to several hiking trails. 
Due to a lot of rain, we spent our Saturday downtown Clayton, which is just about 10 minutes from the campground and definitely worth a visit. 
We would camp here anytime again. 

Very beautiful campground

Beautiful. 
We stayed in campground 28, edge of the mountain, hard to beat those views, but the inclement weather cut our trip short. 
It was very windy, I 
didn’t sleep much worried that the tent would collapse.  Our canopy’s front half flew out of the ground in the middle of the first night, (yes it was staked down but without guy-lines, I wasn’t anticipating hurricane force winds). 
The road to the campground is very steep, very winding, super sharp curves, which was fun for a car, but I don’t know how people get big rigs up those roads. 
Campground was well tended to, clean bathrooms and friendly hosts. Definitely wanna go back and enjoy it properly.

Absolutely beautiful scenery with lots of trails and wildlife to experience. The lake was a perfect and calm setting well also getting some fishing in. Miss Debbie at the trading post what is the best!￼￼

Beautiful Mother’s Day 

The sites we stayed at were on gravel pads located 50-100 ft from the car. The cars are parked on a ridge and you hike a little bit downhill to the camp spot. Very forested and private. Beautiful views from the campsite. Would definitely come back! Water and bathrooms are a short walk down the ridge.

Spacious tent only/walk in only spots.   During the week is best!! Great low key/high elevation  spot….I chose the walk in/tent only spot   Be prepared to hike some stuff up and down a muddy trail!  Awesome to me!

Great escape!

We decided to tent camp at Black Rock after reading some great reviews and because the location was central to hikes we wanted to do in the area. This place was amazing. Check in was easy and there was plenty of firewood. We loved our site, 46, it has an overlook and although it was partially covered by the greenery it was a nice view and I can only imagine how clear the view would be in fall/winter. The site was a good size, but if you have a larger tent as we did, it's a bit cramped with guy lines set out but we have no complaints. It rained some and our tent remained completely dry because of the gravel padding and it's location. We had some issues with the water not turning off at the site, and the camp hosts were always friendly and quick to come over and fix the issue. The bathrooms were just a short walk down the road from our site and the upkeep and cleanliness was much appreciated. There are also washers and dryers near the bathrooms. The campground is close to Tallulah gorge, lake Rabun, and Dry Falls. Definitely will be back!

Beautiful Camping with Amazing Views

Amazing stay. Leaves were peak during our stay this past weekend. Very quite and an awesome park.

Very wooded camping &amp; windy at times but we love it. The road is winding &amp; navigating through the campground with a large rv (ours is a 38 ft 5th wheel) could be challenging to some but is doable. Super clean &amp; very friendly staff. BYOI, bring your own internet if you want good wifi. Ours was Verizon &amp; we had excellent service. 

Great Camping!

Stayed with a group at the pioneer site and it was absolutely ideal! It was tucked away down its own little gated road and had 4 open shelters and 1 cabin with electricity. There was also a pit toilet and shower (no hot water). Each shelter had bunks for 8 people, but we fit several hammocks or 1-2 tents in each shelter. The large fire pit and indoor wood burning stove made the site comfortable for our group of 14. The park itself has tons of hiking and gorgeous views. Clayton is only 20 minutes and has plenty of little stores and restaurants (definitely go into Wander North GA shop!). Can't say enough about this park and site.

RV sites are small but doable. Check with office for advice when reserving. Winding road to the park, so it might be worth a day trip to scout the curving road and rv sites. Bathhouses are clean. It has great tent sites for solo camping or camping with others. Plan to hike the Tennessee Rock Trail. 

Wonderful Place to Chill

**General:** Many options including 4 backcountry primitive sites, 12 walk-in tent sites, 48 electric/water sites, and 10 cabins. Access to this park is up a steep and winding road. I honestly don’t know how some of the larger 5th wheels and RVs we saw navigated it! We were warned that this park is an active bear area and while we did not see any, a woman I spoke with said she had seen a baby bear scoot through the campground (without Mama). An interesting thing about Georgia state parks is that when you arrive and check-in, you become eligible for a senior or military/veteran “rebate” which is not available when reserving. 

  

**Site Quality:** The sites are (too) close together with little or no separation between them. In my opinion, the sites in Section 2 are a bit nicer. Driveways are gravel and vary in length. Some are very long while others are much shorter. Unless you have a small car and are tent camping, I would avoid Site 26! Even though there was plenty of room for our 18-foot van, it took us at least a half dozen attempts to back into the site due to the very steep and narrow road where the pavement drops off. Site 37 is no more than a parallel parking space alongside Site 38. 

  

**Bathhouse:** It was heated and clean. The flush lever was different for each toilet and instructions were posted by each. The showers looked to be very clean, but I did not use so cannot comment on their quality. 

  

**Activities/Amenities:** Fishing, boating, and hiking. The Nantahala Lookout provides gorgeous views. There is a conference center. Laundry facilities are by the bathhouse, but we were told the appliances were due to be upgraded and were not in the best shape. 

  

This is a beautiful park but due to the sites being close together and our challenges accessing Site 26, my rating is three stars.

Beautiful views but wonky campground layout

The group campground was better than my field lab group could've imagined! The site included 4 shelters with bunks, a pit toilet and outdoor shower, a grill, fire pit, and a little cabin with electricity. The campsite was so secluded and private, yet not too far from the cabins up the mountain. The state park is amazing too. Cannot recommend highly enough! 

Fantastic Group Campsite!

Campground staff was friendly and helpful. The campground was clean and well maintained. The views are amazing. A bigger RV may not be able to make the trip. Research the roads if you have a large camper.

This is a unique eco system high in the north Georgia mountains . Lots of hiking and views to take in . Clean facilities and nice staff . 

Stunning Knifes Edge Campground 

Even though we only stayed for one night and were not prepared in any way shape or form to be cold at night - we had a great time. The hosts at the front were lovely and kind about getting us checked in last minute. The trails off to the side are great! We got beautiful sunrise and sunset photos. The camp sites are nicely spaced out, come with a lockbox container to put food in (bring your own lock and key), little fire pit with metal grill over it, and a good size area for your tent. We got campsite C which had a cute picnic bench as well. Definitely will be back!
