    Renowned for being the country’s first undersea park, John Pennekamp camping encompasses an impressive 70 nautical square miles. While many visitors view the park’s colorful coral reefs and teeming marine life on a glass-bottom boat tour, one can get a closer look by scuba diving or snorkeling. Canoeing and kayaking through the park's waters are popular activities; fishing is permitted in designated areas.

    Visitors can also enjoy walking on short trails through tropical hammocks, picnicking or swimming at the beach.     The campground is considered a tropical outpost on the edge of the Everglades. All sites have electricity, water, a grill and picnic table. The 104 campsites accommodate all campers, from tents to large motor homes.

    Sites 1-19 are for tents and pop-ups only. Hammock camping is designated in campsites 2, 5, 34, 53 and 79.

    This park is frequented in the winter by motor-home campers seeking warmer climates.

    Pets are welcome in the campground. Consumption of alcohol is prohibited except in designated areas. The restrooms have hot showers and two have laundry facilities. A centralized dump station is available for RV campers. Maximum RV length = 50 feet.

    The primitive campsite for hikers is located 3 miles from the parking area within the Strand Swamp Trail, one of two trails, located north of Highway 41. The site accommodates up to six people. The hiking trail is wet during the summer months and some sections are muddy all year. Registration is required by calling the ranger station at 239-394-3397.

    The primitive canoe campsite at Grocery Place on the Blackwater River accommodates up to eight people. Accessible only by boat or canoe/kayak, the site is located 9 miles from the park boat basin.

    Mitchell Landing Campground is a primitive campground located in Big Cypress National Preserve. Access to the campground is along a secondary gravel road. Cell phone service is limited and it is highly encouraged that reservations be made in advance.__ Mitchell Landing Campground is open August 15-April 15 and offers 12 campsites. This campground allows for tent, RV, and travel trailer camping. Visitors may enjoy nearby activities such as off-road vehicle trail access, hiking, fishing, and our popular loop road scenic drive. The campground offers vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings. There is no water available.__

    Mitchell Landing Campground is a popular location for airboat users. It is part of the Stairstep backcountry unit, the only unit open to airboats in the park. Visitors with an off-road vehicle (ORV) permit can access airboat trails directly from the campground.
