Delightful Oasis outside Orlando!

Depending on where you are in Orlando, Lake Louisa State Park is less than a half hour away for most. Located south of Clermont, the state park is situated on a huge parcel of land.

The winding roadways within the park offer great bicycling opportunities, making me pine for mine which sat idly in my garage back home. During our stay, they were holding a triathlon the weekend we were to leave, so we saw many training on the peaceful and mostly untraveled roads.

The park holds many trails. We walked a few and were rewarded with peaceful treks. On one such hike, we were able to spot a bobcat in pursuit of dinner, which was a delight to see firsthand.

The RV/Tent campgrounds are open and close together...the shower/bath house was clean and convenient. We opted to stay in a primitive site and loved it. To utilize primitive campsites, you'll park at a trailhead and pack your gear into a pine forest. We arrived at night, so it seemed farther back to the site than it actually is...but I'd venture to say it was a quarter mile, at least. But the reward of complete solitude was well worth it. Be forewarned, there is no potable water or facilities back there...only a soft layer of pine needles, a fire ring and a picnic table. More than enough for me!

We were serenaded by the cackle of wild turkey, the squeals of wild pig, the yip and yap of coyotes, hoots from resident owls and the occasional shrill from the bobcat (which was unexpected and sent a wonderful chill up your spine). In the morning fog and dew, the countless spiderwebs made for great photography. The gurgle of a nearby stream made you nod off quickly. The stream was black from tannin and appeared eerie... dotted with cypress knees and hanging Spanish moss blowing in the wind.

The many smaller lakes and ponds are tranquil and picturesque...but always be mindful of what may lurk below the surface. Take heed and don't wade or swim there. Lake Louisa itself has a beach area and swimming is done there. That is also where the primitive campers can utilize the shower house/bathrooms...the downside...its on the other side of the park from primitive camping. In exchange for the cheaper site fee, you don't get the conveniences of the RV/Tent campground. No worries...you just need to be aware of the times the beach shower house opens and closes.

Overall, a fantastic choice to spend camping...and you wouldn't even know the craziness of Orlando was so close.
