Good spot outside of Great Sand Dunes

Rough road coming in but still doable for low clearance and 2WD. Sites and pretty cramped for those in groups but still doable for the one we stayed in. Bathrooms and trash receptacles were nice and clean.

  • Space for two cars
  • Firepit and space for two tents

Fabulous views, busy trail

This is a first come/first serve campground. On a Thursday, I saw what was probably the last spot, fill up by 4:30PM. The BLM number on the website is great for quick pre recorded info. As of 6/11, the dirt road that treks miles up the mountain is still nowhere near finished. The trail and…

Overall a great campsite

We really enjoyed our time here. There are 12 sites, some have a larger footprint than others. Smaller sized ones are: 3, 4, 5, and 6. They are all a fine size though. Has a fire pit with grill, picnic table, and sites 2, 5, and 9 have the log covering. The sites are pretty close together, but we…

Beautiful Views

I wasn't expecting to pay a fee, since it's managed by BLM. The fees were humble, though. $11 a night for a single camper. The campgrounds were great. I was able to get in early and pick a good site. Table and fire pit on site. Bathrooms in walking distance, and seemed to be well kept. They do seem…

Very WINDY! BYO water

I wouldn't make a point to come back but wouldn't avoid it. We camped here for proximity to the sand dunes, obviously, which I'm sure is the goal of those of you reading this review.

The road driving up is about 20-30 mins and pretty rough/bumpy. All sorts of cars made it, just know your…

Don’t trust Dyrt directions

I’m sure there is beautiful camping in the area because it’s gorgeous out here, but after having to camp high up on an extremely rocky trail, I learned 2 lessons:

  1. Don’t enter at night
  2. Don’t trust directions via Dyrt + Google Maps

Juniper Breaks was Great!

This campground was great! Easy to get to with gas stations and shops about 15 min away so you can pick stuff up if needed. The spots are well spaced so you don’t feel on top of your neighbors. Bathrooms are not far from any spot. Tons of trails to the water lots of places to explore.

Our one…

Beautiful Spot, Would Return

We stayed at Alvarado for one night on 5/15/2021. We had sites 34 and 35 right across the road from each other. Steve the host was really friendly and stopped by to say hello a couple of times. There are several hiking trails nearby. The vault toilets were right by us and we didn’t have any issues…

Our family camping in Great Sand dunes

We enjoyed the camping trip, and the kids love it. My wife bought the burrito in the restaurant, and the great chili is fantastic; you must try it if you like great New Mexico food. Only be careful in dune we got bites on legs, which was very bad after a few days later. I never know about it until…

Not Fancy but...

Easy access and not too far out of Pueblo or Cañon City. We didn't venture much further than the gate at the latrine, but we saw people coming out so I can assume there are spots further in. It's dispersed camping, so not fancy but a great place to park our teardrop for the night.

Loud and Busy

Stayed here 4/30/21. The location itself is beautiful, with sweeping views, waterfall, and excellent night sky. However, it was crowded and overrun with people. There was no host at this site which made things even more hectic as folks were camping all over the place. Additionally, cars kept…

Great views

Great views of the valley and a few sites have a view of the dunes. Showed up on Friday afternoon and only 3 other campers but most sites filled up by dusk. Drive slowly through the camp, it’s dusty. I lived in this area years ago and Wind is to be expected. The drive up was bumpy because the road…

April 4th day hike

Rough road up to the camp sites. Some construction looks like improving the road. Dirt and rock road, twists and turns. Only half the sites at camp were taken. Many with trees to hang hammocks and shade. Amazing views from almost all sites. We went up to scout and see the falls. Lots of day…
