Forest Service Road 328 Dispersed

This was essentially our basecamp for our Grand Canyon Visit. Really close to anything you could need and your entrance to GCNP is covered for a week after paying the one time. Could not for the life of me find public water to refill my potable anywhere in GCNP, ended up getting a fill-up from the Tusayan FD. The general store at GC doesn't disappoint though, I got a decent camp chair and a new water receptacle for a great price, and breakfast at El Tovar in the park is highly recommended. You're almost guaranteed to see wildlife, especially elk. The elk calls at night can be eerie, but peaceful. Noticed A LOT of trash that I wish I could have picked up if we had room. Even some poorly-thought-out latrines. Do better, people.

Perfect free spot just minutes from GCNP and Civilized conveniences

*   Great boondocking campground 5 miles from the entrance of Grand Canyon National Park! First come first serve.
*   Super convenient to the town of Tasayan for supplies and food.
*   A great alternative if you couldn't get reservations for campgrounds in the area. It's hard to believe this place is FREE!
*   North of the Tusayan Ranger District and under a mile from the South Entrance Ranger Station. Walking distance from lots of things
*   You can see the campgrounds from the main highway so it can get a little noisy and headlights can be a little distracting in the evenings
*   It's a dirt road getting in and can be super muddy during wetter seasons. A lot of people have gotten stuck in the mud. 4 wheel drive is highly recommended.
*   Because it was so muddy when we were here, it was a little difficult finding a flat/dry/level spot to pitch a tent. This place is ideal for RV/trailer camping
*   Warning: Lots of generators running throughout the evening. Bring earbuds
*   Fires are allowed and some sites have firepits. Lots of found wood lying around that can be used as well.
*   There are plenty of areas to camp (definitely can accommodate at least 20 different groups) and you'll even have space to spread your legs. 
*   There are lots of trees in the area so I'd imagine there'd be nice shade during hotter weather.
*   Not as secluded as other boondock sites we've been to, but you can't beat the close proximity to the Park.
*   No showers, toilets, running water.
*   Practice LNT and pack in pack out. This place had some trash lying around and you can definitely tell it's heavily used. Help pick up trash if you see any and leave the place better than you found it.
*   Great cell service with AT&amp;T

We absolutely LOVED camping here. We were able to enter Grand Canyon National Park super early before the crowds and enjoy the views uninterrrupted. This is such a great spot to camp for anyone on a budget who is just looking for a place to rest their head. We couldn't believe how close this was to the Park and that it was completely free. It's also quite beautiful if you can get past the mud and loud humming of generators. If you're in an RV, this place is the dream. We woke up the next morning to the entire campground covered in snow. It was absolutely stunning! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Right outside the gates of Grand Canyon National Park!

Could only get one night at the Mather CG in Grand Canyon, so we went boondocking just outside of the National Park in Kaibab NF.  It was only a few minute drive from the park entrance, and had nearby access to shops.  

  

This is a primitive campsite so no facilities, bathrooms, water, and pack in pack out.  There were a handful of campers here but enough space along the road to find a private spot.  There were a few other nearby forest roads that offered dispersed camping but this one had fewer people.

  

Would certainly camp here again if we can't get a spot in the park.

Great Free Dispersed Camping Minutes from Grand Canyon

This place is the perfect place if you are visiting the Grand Canyon or if you just want a nice quiet and beautiful place to camp. The directions are accurate &amp; I had no trouble finding it. I went in August 2020, the weather was perfect and comfortable for sleeping &amp; it wasn’t crowded even when we arrived after 7pm. Would 1000% stay here again. 

Best canping outside of Grand Canyon!

This was definitely the best campsite that we stayed on during our trip! Our spot was very isolated had a great sunset and was very quiet. Road was a little bumpy and not suggested for passenger cars! Perfect spot!

Perfect campground!

The person that comment below and gave it 1 star is wrong. You’re aloud to camp in this area just go past half a mile. Those signs are right in the entrance but if you keep driving there is plenty of space to camp. Many many spots and it’s free! Minutes from the Grand Canyon. 

Peaceful and free

Get there during the day. We got there after sun down and it was very difficult and confusing trying to find a spot. It was such an amazing free campsite. Super spacious! Sucked that we couldn’t have any campfires at night because of the wildfire danger. During the night you can hear a pack of wolves or coyotes howl which was very scary and cool. I would definitely go back there. 

Such a great campsite for the free 

This was the most dispersed camping I think we’ve ever done! We came to see the Grand Canyon and didn’t realize just how many places there would be to stay at! This location is not the only dispersed camping area FYI! You’ll see as your driving among the highway that there is many signs pointing you to national park camping! Exactly as the other reviews explained it, you get to experience the great outdoors with all the animals around! Super cold here, but it wasn’t that bad and we were tent camping! Many people around everywhere you went! Cell phone reception was good-right next to the village. We picked up pizza and beer and enjoyed our night here!

What a great camping experience!

The pin drops in the area with “no camping” signs but if you keep driving up the road past the stables, there’s plenty of spaces. Beautiful in the snow, and it’s a well graded road, you don’t need 4 wheel drive. 

Keep driving

Beautiful and tranquil, lots of wood with a fire pit in each spot. Easy access and close to the grand canyon.

We drove in for a while till we found a secluded spot.

It got to 4 degrees fahrenheit so all our water and food froze. Lovely Mexican restaurant nearby to escape to. 

Great spot, very cold 

Super close to the Grand Canyon and free — can’t get much better. The road was easy to find and the camping sites start just after the cattle guard.

Fire rings were set up at most of the camp sites. Only 3 other campers when I went (Sunday night) and we had a secluded little area where we couldn’t see anyone. Could hear coyotes in the distance. Stars were amazing. 

The obvious: no services or toilets. Dig your holes, clean up after yourselves, leave it nice for the next campers. 

Free primitive camping

This is great dispersed camping. The start of the road has lots of “no camping” signs, but once you pass the Apache Stables there are dozens of spots. This was a popular location when I was there, but if you keep driving far enough you’ll find a spot. I had to go 2 miles in I think. Lots of large and small spots, I saw many larger rigs like school bus conversions and trailers. The road is well maintained. Pretty densely forested with plenty of room between spots. It was very quiet. The stars are amazing here! And you are so close to the park! Decent cell reception depending on your provider and town is very close by.

Can’t believe it’s free!

This is an amazing place to camp at. There are a lot of spots. When we went most people were closer to the entrance. The spots when you first drive in say no camping but once you get past the stable you are allowed to camp. There are various sizes of spots to camp at that accommodate a few people to large groups. We drove about 8 miles back and took a tertiary rode then drove back a few miles on that road. There was a tree down in the middle of the path but we just drove around it. We got there mid day Friday and stayed till Sunday morning. It was quiet the entire time. We did see a guy on a motorcycle pass by but other than that not a soul. At dawn and dusk we heard turkeys gobblin' in the distance and coyotes or wolves howling in the early mornings. They were fire rings in most spots we saw and the grounds are pretty flat where you can set up camp. Some of the dirt was really soft and kicks up dust so that was kind of annoying but there were spots were the ground was covered in pine needles and pine cones. On our way home we stopped at the Grand Canyon because of how close it is. Might as well right. We will definitely be back in the future

Quiet and secluded 

This is the closest I have camped to the park without being in it. Only about a 5 minutes drive to entrance station. Secluded and plenty of spots. Hammock trees, places to hide and pee, and trees to hang the camp shower

Close to Grand Canyon 

The last left before you get in the park. You could literally walk into the park if you wanted to. Plenty of spots just get there somewhat early so you don’t have to go too far down the road. Road is serviceable for any car. There’s no camping for the first quarter mile but ride past Apache ranch and the spots are there after the cattle guard. No water or bathrooms but you’re close to Mather Point where both of those are plus, you know, the Grand Canyon.

So Close To The Park

I've never been to the Grand Canyon, but this spot is pretty nice! You have to keep driving further back past the stables, but there are numerous sites with decent room to camp. 
It is a bit rocky but taking usual precautions and going slow/ scoping it out on foot will help. We didn't go super far back but found a nice spot just off the dirt For Road 3280.

The night we arrived it was a full moon and the view was spectacular. Even the sunset was amazing. Beware of sudden weather changes though, because there was a 90% chance of rain 5-6pm but it never ended up raining (woot!) But just make sure you're prepared. Temps were highs around 70 and low was 34, slight wind occasionally. 

There were a lot of ashes/ coal dispersed around the site, but it's a dirt site, so everything is dirty anyways. Would come back.

Wow!

Great free dispersed camping immediately outside the Grand Canyon!  There are an abundance of sites here, we spent about 45 minutes just picking and choosing our favorite.  Please be mindful of the spots that work best for bigger rigs, we just had a tent so we left the pull through spots for the RVs.  The sites do have nice fire pits but no established fire rings.  There are no facilities here but the Grand Canyon entrance sign which is still outside the park has pit toilets and is very close.  We were spending our days in the park so we took our trash to Mather campgrounds over flow parking lot dumpster, otherwise there are gas stations about ten minutes south.  We actually found the sites here to be more free of trash then the Mather campground sites we stayed in the two nights before.

Will stay here again!

Plenty of spots, just go past the stables and you’ll see the site lined along the road. The sites are pretty big and private, I recommend tucking yourself as far back as possible to stay away from the dust kicked up by passing cars. Also, lots of yellow jackets so be careful if you’re allergic!

Nice and basic!

The road is well marked and the sites are large and flat. We got set up very easily and had beautiful views. 

The temperature at night and in the early morning was very cool. Warmed up quickly in the late morning.

Easy and beautiful

Very nice free dispersed sites right outside of Grand canyon N.P.. Plenty of options, very large &amp; secluded. Turn onto Moqui Dr off of 180, then left onto forest Rd 328. The 1st 1/4 mile is no camping, go past the stables &amp; youll find plenty 
of pull off sites. Made fire pits at most. Lots of wildlife, Elk everywhere.
The only negative I could see was some trash left behind by previous campers... Please pack out!

Excellent, A+ dispersed sites!

I work remotely and the hubs works for my company onsite. We have been staying on FS near Williams. But following the 14 days and moving 25+ miles away forced us to take a quick leap up to Tusayan. We have a great spot about a mile in. Tourism companies use this FS road so it is wonderfully maintained. Perfect Verizon service and TMobile works well too. Could not ask for a better spot. 
I will say, plenty of traffic but nothing to cause alarm. We’re far enough away from our neighbors that I don’t feel bad running our generator so I can work. 

100% Recommend - Remote Working Not an Issue

The campsite was worth coming to twice! We drove in on a Sunday night and had many sites to choose from. The road to access the spot was very nice and the campsites were pretty clean. 

GC Part two:

First of all this campground was easy to navigate and the roads are accessible to all vehicles(I drove my 2016 Ford Escape)! You cannot camp the first 1/4 of a mile but it’s clearly marked. Pass the stables you’ll begin to see sites pop up. I cannot begin to describe how pretty it is out here. You are far enough from the main road you can barely hear any road noise. The wildlife here is abundant!! I ran across a herd of elk while leaving the site early in the morning but you can hear them calling in the evening and in the morning. Plenty of birds too! The sites are very easy to find and range from right off of the road to tucked back into the woods. I highly recommend this dispersed camping! And it’s only half an hour from the south rim of the Grand Canyon

Super secret get away!! 

Really nice spot big enough for 4-6 trucks. We got to hear coyotes all night. Pretty nippy that night. Right at the gate of the Grand Canyon. 
Had a few people come flying by since the road is right at the camp site but it wasn’t too bad. 

Great spot

We rolled in at about 7PM in late January. No one was around and the sky was amazingly clear. We found a large site probably about 500 yards passed the stables, it was muddy from the snow melt but not the sticky mud so not bad at all. The temps drop fast so by 9PM the ground was already hardening and it was in the high 20's. When we got up it was 16 degrees, the ground was hard as a rock. We loved that we were only minutes to the main entrance. The only suckey part was...people need to learn to leave the camp better than they found it; there was a little garbage. I think with the amount of people camping these days there are some who haven't learned out door etiquette. Lets all keep these amazing spots better than we found them. Happy Camping!

Easy access dispersed camping near the Grand Canyon entrance

Easy to get to places to stay for 20 miles road is in good shape. I pull a 40 foot solitude and there was no issue finding a spot

Great place

Only about a half a mile from the south rim GC entrance this was a perfect spot. We went a few miles down the road and found us the perfect secluded spot. Would certainly recommend. Have t-mobile service and got very strong service here. 

Perfect location for GC

Great secluded spots with privacy that are just outside the Grand Canyon National Park. Took a 28’ trailer in with no problems at all. Everything was great. The only downside is that during certain portions of the day, this camp was in the direct flight path of tourist helicopters going back and forth. 

Great free spot next to Grand Canyon NP

Peaceful wooded area literally right outside the grand canyon park boundary. don’t be fooled by the no camping signs around the entrance, about half a mile down the road sites start popping up.

Dispersed/primitive so remember to bring water and a trowel+tp ;)

nice free spot

Dropped off our 18ft travel trailer and spent the day in Grand Canyon Natl park. Located right outside the park as mentioned, the sites are spacious and the road manageable for all types of vehicles or RVs. Even gave us shelter from the latest wind storm that seems to be battering the US this month. Since we camped during high winds all flights were grounded, bonus! Don’t be discouraged by the closed campsite signs at the start, keep going, lots more available. 

Great location!

Our first time boondocking and this was a beautiful, quiet, safe place right outside of the Grand Canyon. About 15 minute drive from Bright Angel Lodge. Drive past all the No camping signs on Moqui road, go past the stables and you will find many spots to set up camp. Some big spot for RVs and small spots for cars &amp; tents. Each site had a fire circle made with rocks, some even had wood gathered. We did 2 nights Saturday and Sunday. There were 6 horses grazing near our site which was awesome to see up close. Fellow campers are friendly and wave as you drive past. I can’t believe this place is free! 

Boondocking 

US forestry service road off of 180 right before Grand Canyon National Park entrance.  The main forestry road is gravel/dirt and there are many spots  available, but make sure you drive past the horse farm. You will see horses and all sorts of wildlife.  Sites are clean, but there are not amenities so pack in and pack out.

We had well enough space for the night in this dispersed campground. There was about 5 other RVs but the space is big. Just make sure you pass all the no camping signs and the stables and you will find the place

Great place super close to Grand Canyon

It’s a well maintained dirt road fine for cars with low clearance. As other reviews state go past no camping signs and horse stables and sights pop up as you go down the road. Horses wander around but seem mostly uninterested in people. It’s pack in and pack out, no amenities.

Primitive 

Great spot for boondocking. Got here an hour or so before sun set and was able to find a secluded spot about 2 miles in. We are driving a Solis and had no problem with the road in. 
Clean up after yourself. If you're not going to take care of the public land, you don't deserve to stay on it. Simple, don't be a degenerate. 

Solis camping

This site is a great find! Easy access from 64 just north of Tusayan. FR 328 is on the left if you are headed towards the Canyon. Road is packed gravel and any car could easily drive it. Less than a mile from the park sign. Super great spot. As many others have said there are several road side spots with 🚫⛺️ signs in them but these are just in the very beginning of the road. You’ll pass some stables on the left and then will begin to see sites. We were here in November and had no problem finding a big beautiful spot. Be prepared for some ccccold nights if you are here in November! 19degrees this am! Obvi no services here but a great, FREE, quiet, convenient place to camp near the Grand Canyon

Fab dispersed camping near Grand Canyon

NFS dispersed campsite just south of the entrance of the Grand Canyon National Park.  There may be 6 other parties back here with everyone quietly enjoying the evening.  Some wild ponies are grazing nearby.

Great spot away from the huddle and bustle.

So glad we found this place since Mather campground was full when we arrived into town around 6pm. Found an open site a little ways down the road with a flat area to pitch our tent and a fire ring someone had set up before us. Such a serene camping experience.

Dispersed camping 

This is an awesome camping spot just outside of the Grand Canyon! It is bery secluded and quite! The only downside is how fast people drive down the road. It really stirs up the dirt.

Great location with many spots. We came early afternoon and there were many spots left. 

Great location close to GCNP

Beautiful, peaceful camp site. Other than occasional car passing down gravel road nearby its very quiet. There are stones placed for fire pit. 

Grand canyon dispersed camping

The road in is narrow and on some sides there have been cut deep gutters to catch the rain runoff. I got nervous about turning around our 20 ft motorhome, but we found a spot and it worked out. Our spot had a nice fire ring, and 9space for a tent. We heard two big noisy trucks race by about 8:00 p.m. and then all was quiet after that.

Perfect Spot

We drove further the 328 road and found a wonderful large spot with fire ring. Forest roads under the Grand Canyon are probably always crowded, but here we felt both very private and safe. One of the best spots of our journey. Don't be affraid to drive further the road to find a nice space.

Wonderfull for dispered, less crowded

Easy to find, gravel road with some bumps and holes, but easy for our RV 25ft 2WD. Spend only one night, did hear only one car pasing during the night.

Quiet spot

There were so many options for campsites here it was incredible. It was so close to the Grand Canyon entrance and super easy to find. 

Quiet and expansive 

The campsite itself was amazing! We did end up having to move locations due to a grizzly being in our area. The stars were unreal and we were able to see the starlink satellites. There were a few other campers around which made us feel safer as we were scared of the grizzly lol. There is definitely A LOT of wildlife in the area as we heard mountain lions and coyotes. We lived the convenience of this camp site because Grand Canyon is literally right next to it. I highly recommend this area! 

Eventful night

Amazing sites with beautiful views and the ability to be secluded if you choose to do so (4x4 recommended for these areas).
