Homolovi State Park — Homolovi Ruins State Park

Stopped here on my grand Route 66 adventure this summer. I really liked this park for several reasons. 1\. It’s convenient to Route 66 (and Hwy 40); 2\. It’s close to Petrified Forest National Park, which is pretty cool to explore on its own; 3\. Free showers!!; 4\. The campground is set back from the main park so you have a bit of privacy from day trippers; 5\. Tent sites were level and well maintained (mine was raked!!); 6\. All sites seemed to have hook-ups whether you needed them or not (maybe there were tent only sites, but it was all one price so no big deal); 7\. The park has some great trails for hiking; 8\. There is ancient pottery shards everywhere (don’t take it! Leave it for everyone to enjoy); 9\. Free showers!!; 10\. Not too far from Winslow, AZ, where you CAN stand on the corner.  

Overall I enjoyed my stay here, though I got in at sunset and left shortly after the main park opened at 8am. This might be my only negative about the park. The main park and the best attractions don’t open until 8am (a ranger actually comes and opens the gates), which is much later than I tend to get moving (up with the sun and all). And with the heat of the day starting at 9:30, it’s hard to get to the sites and get in a good hike before it’s too hot.

A hot desert gem

The visitor center is awesome.  Amazing architecture for a visitor center in the middle of nowhere.  The ruins are cool, there are a few different sites and more is being uncovered all the time.  There was even tissues and a heater in the bathrooms at the campsite.   

Unsuspectingly amazing

This place could easily be a national monument.  The visitor center is a piece of art!  Insane artifacts and they are still uncovering!  Great bathrooms and showers are free as always, AZ!

Super underrated

**Campground Review:**

This campground was priceless. We stayed at site 11 and it was perfect in reference to the bathrooms for late night use. The campground is a loop with lots of wild Arizona desert brush for little boys to explore. This loops also makes some campsites inconvenient to the bathrooms and FREE showers. Check the site map before reserving. The restrooms and FREE showers were very clean and spacious. The campground was also very clean. I did notice, on our visit, there seemed to be many more RV's than tents. Also, not a lot of families with young children although my children loved the park. The sites are open so there is not a lot of privacy, however, they are spaced apart so you are not on top of each other. The rangers and volunteers were very friendly, knowledgeable and patient with little boy questions. Our first hike was to the Visitors center through wild Arizona desert and cows with a beautiful view of a snow capped mountain. I was very impressed with the Native American history at this park. Each site has a fire ring, grill, and tent pad (with eye hooks all around). The eye hooks were very handy because the winds got a little gusty one night. Also, did I mention the cows???

1.  This meal was an easy perfect Easter lunch on the day we packed up to leave.
2.  The instructions were spot on and easy to follow
3.  My husband and I enjoyed this meal more than the kids did but the flavor was great. The chicken was nice big pieces, there were lots of veggies and the stuffing was the best.
4.  Took up very little space in packing, light weight, very filling.

Homolovi State Park and Ruins....Ruins of the 'Ancient Ones', the Hopi. Land of Little Hills. A Galaxy of stars in the dark skies at night as you snuggle under your sleeping bag the cool desert breeze across your face, the howl of coyotes in the distance. Free use of showers and bathrooms after driving the I-40 , large spaces for the motorhome with FHU, a dump station, potable and drinking water available, dumpster for trash. Easy pay after 430pm on site. Then there are the ruins at Homolovi l and ll, Winslow a quick 10 minutes away, little painted desert over the hill, Petrified Forest and Holbrook East on I 40 about 20 miles away, Meteor Crator I 40 west about 15 miles away. Then there are the San Francisco Peaks in the distance. How can you go wrong with a stopover here.

Wide Open Spaces 

This place is so peaceful. You can see the mesas in the distance. It's not far from Winslow or Flagstaff. But it's nice and quiet there. It has a wonderful feeling. There are many artifacts so remember to leave no trace and not move or remove anything.

Quiet of the desert 

We really enjoyed this campground. We did not need a reservation in June when we went. They had plenty of available sites to choose from. The site we chose was site 16 which is a primitive site. If you walked up the hill a bit you could see Winslow, AZ, which was really pretty at night. The park is still gery dark though so you could see the stars. I’m sure if we had been there during a new moon, we could’ve seen the milky way it was that dark.

Our site was very nice. The tent pad had been raked, which was something you don’t see every day. It alwo had a picnic table and fire ring. There are not a lot of trees at this campground which may deter some, but if you are just there for an overnight stay like we were, there was no need for trees. They have new ones planted by each site so someday there will be shade.

They have a shower house, but we did not use it because it looked like it could use a good cleaning. The restrooms were ok, but could’ve used a cleaning as well. It seemed odd to me that the tent pads were raked but the bathroom stalls weren’t clean. Still, it was better than a smelly outhouse so I can’t complain too much.

Coming from the humidity in the midwest, we really enjoyed the lack of moisture. It was plenty hot during the day, but cooled off nicely in June. Cool dry air is perfect for sleeping and we got a great night’s sleep. Be sure to go to bed early because the sun rises early and it gets hot fast in the morning.

This campground is in the Homolovi State Park which was very interesting to take a look at while we were there. The visitor center is stunning...be sure to check out the bathrooms there! They are pretty awesome for a state park visitor center! The ruins may not be national park quality, but they are close. We had the place to ourselves which was kinda neat. It was so peaceful I could’ve just sat on one of the benches at the top of a hill for hours taking it all in. If you want a relaxing and peaceful campground and state park to visit, I highly recommend this one!

One other point to note is that Winslow is only about 7 miles away and they have a Walmart for supplies, as well as a few fast food places. You can also visit Standin’ on a Corner Park and some Route 66 stops. Overall, we enjoyed our time in this wonderfull desert location and would go back to camp again!

Peaceful desert campground

Not much out there in Winslow AZ, but the ruins are a must if you're in the area. If you want to camp for the night, I recommend staying in the campground. Even though you can see the hwy, it's far enough that you don't hear the noise and you get a great view of the Flagstaff snow peaks. For $25 we had water, electric, picnic table and firepit (they don't sell firewood) Although we had a firepit, we didn't use it because Winslow should be called Wind-not so-slow! Crazy how that wind whips across the desert. The camp host was very nice and helpful. There is a path you can walk over to the visitor center (it's a little over a mile hike). Bathrooms were very clean, didn't use the showers, so I don't know. Satellite dish, had no problem with reception, wide open spaces. Verizon phone worked great

Great camp in the Ruins

Very nice RV park within 2 miles of I-40 near Winslow, Az. Park has about 35, nicely spaced RV pads on asphalt. Very nice restrooms with excellent showers. Many pads with electricity and water. No sewer but they have a free dump site at the entrance. Each site has planted trees and fire pits. Exploring ancient Indian ruins is a great addition to your stay. 

Great spot for a break from Interstate 40

Just stunning!! Beautiful trails and gorgeous overall. A lot of interesting information at the ruin sites. We stayed at the campground and enjoyed watching the sunset. 

Great place to camp overnight.$18 for tents, running water, smallish trees, restrooms with flush toilets, extra fees for electrical hookups. The fees keep the hobos away.  I-40 and the train tracks are close enough to hear in the tent, but not loud enough to keep you awake.

 The bathrooms are wiped down everyday as well as the showers which are in decent condition. The water is hot and water pressure is great.  

Be careful driving in, they've filled in the cracks in the roads about a mile in, but after that there are decent sized cracks going the whole length of the road left to right. Smaller vehicles didn't seem to have a problem. But we had to drive very slowly in our RV.

WOW, WOW, WOW

This is a great little campground 2 miles outside of Winslow Arizona. It’s in the middle of a state park that has two areas of ruins. One area is located about a mile from the campground. The campground has all the amenities. There’s good distance between each of the RV sites but there’s no shade since this is grassland. This is a wonderful place to explore.

Great Place to Exlore

Homolovi is right off the interstate on the way from Albuquerque to Flagstaff. We decided to stop here and check out the Route 66 town of Winslow, AZ. It was a neat little town with a lot of history! We went to Standin on the Corner Park and La Posada Hotel. The park itself has ruins you can explore, but we weren’t necessarily blown away by them. However, the bathroom and shower facilities were nice and even though it’s not a super scenic location, we still had some nice sunsets! All in all, this is a convenient stop if you are traveling this way!

Convenient location

Stayed here for a night in July 2020 on my way to the Grand Canyon from El Paso, TX. It was very quiet and well kept. The road was freshly paved and even though there’s no trees around, each campsite seemed pretty private. 

We stayed in site 40. We had 2 tents but the pad was only big enough for one so we put the bigger one on the paved road over a tarp and it was still comfortable. A hammer was provided to stake down tents.

There was only only building for all the bathrooms and showers but they were nice and clean. Bathrooms had stalls but the 4 showers each had their own rooms for maximum privacy. 

Some sites had power and some didn’t. Our site (40) didn’t. I enjoyed walking a few hundred yards down the nature trail by the campsite and watching the sunset. It was beautiful!  Cell service was fine (Verizon). I’ll definitely stay here again when I’m passing through.

Great spot on a road trip

We had a pull through spot for our 30' Class A. In order to have the electric and water hookups(dump site only) on the"correct" side of our rig, we had to back into our pull through because we would have had to drive the wrong way down the road otherwise. And the picnic tables and grill are on that same side. So in the future, we'll park"correctly" so we can enjoy the table outside our front door and just run electric cable under the rig, along with the hose.

  

Otherwise, this is a really lovely spot. It's not right in Winslow, but the extra 5 minutes is worth it. It's a very peaceful spot...you don't hear the interstate noise and this place does NOT have a party atmosphere. Everyone was just super quiet and friendly. Due to traffic issues in New Mexico, we didn't get here until nearly 5(instead of original plan of 2 pm) and we had to leave early in the morning...so didn't really get to enjoy the place as we had hoped. But I saw enough to know we would NOT hesitate to return.

Lovely campground with some unusual layout issues

This state park offers tent sites, 
RV with electrical/water and pull-through sites. In winter water was turned off at campsites but bathroom and showers were open. Trash and sewage dump also available. Just a couple of miles off I-40 which is both convenient and not very scenic. Great sunset though looking fish at the interstate. Homolovi archeological site to visit if you have time. Great cell reception both Verizon and AT&amp;T

Nice option off I-40 

Stellar basecamp option off I-40 to explore Petrified Forest National Park. Online reservation was easy and cheap. Tent and RV sites reasonably spaced. Fire Ring and picnic tables at each site. Bathrooms were open with running water and flush toilets. Camped two nights while visiting Petrified Forest. 

Tip: 10 min drive to Winslow for dinner and drinks at Relic Road Brewing Company🍻 🪵 

Petrified Forest NP Basecamp

$15 for non electric spot. I thought it was worth it because of everything that comes with it. Paved roads, large parking spots, picnic tables and grills, and fire rings. Water also at each spot.

Toilets and showers were clean and free to use (comes with camping fee). Also plus we’re they were heated and the shower got nice and hot. 

Walked my dog along a 1.2 mile trail through flat brush land. Good for trail running. 

Clean and spacious

I really enjoyed this campground. After many days of dispersed camping it felt nice having a clean and developed campground. Paved driveway, picnic table, water faucet, grill, etc. Very nice staff.

Easy to get in and settled, very well maintained and clean. So beautiful with blooming trees! Sunset was wow!! tonight!!
Had dinner as the sun went down...gorgeous colors in the  sky!

Perfect place!

This state park is beautiful and has lots to offer...hiking/biking trails...ruins to visit...as well as wildlife viewing...camp sites are easy back-in or pull thru...bath house is clean as well as showers...would love to spend more time but this is a one nite stop for now...

Thank the Hopi tribe

Homolovi SP was easy to find off I-40, just follow the signs. We went straight to the campground (CG) as the entry shack was not occupied. We should have gone to the Visitors Center and register first, which we did immediately after setting up, but we had reservations and our site number. The visitors center parking lot is fairly small, but we could have parked there with our 39’ 5th Wheel. We easily parked in pull through site 28 with 50 AMP &amp; water. The pull throughs on the right side of the road in the 20 and 30 area all have the 50 &amp; 30 AMP electric and water on the passenger/RV door side. The site was plenty long and we had no problem positioning and running our electric and water under the rig. Sites throughout the CG are nicely spaced apart. The Arizona State Park website provides excellent details on sites and camping here. We saw quite a few overnighters each day during our 3 nights stay over a weekend in June, and the park was never full. Suggest you bring ant spray as the little buggers headed up the stairs soon after arrival. Early one morning we walked the mile down to the Homolovi 1 ruins and were pleasantly surprised by a small herd of donkeys that posed for pictures but didn’t get too close. We also drove over to the Homolovi II ruins. Lots of history in this SP. We drove the short distance to Winslow where we were “Standing on a Corner” and did a supply run to Walmart and Safeway. We enjoyed our three nights stay in our spacious site with desert views.

WOW! Out in the middle of no where! Sweeeet!

We really liked this park. We only stayed one night because we were just passing through and have stood on the corner in Winslow and toured the petrified forest NP, but would have actaully stayed a few days despite it because it was so nice and quiet.  There was no shade, but weather has been plenty cool, so fine for this time of year.  Not much left of the ruins, sadly, but there is a lot of great information, a nice visitor center, and a few roads that were great for bikeriding.

Spacious sites, Archaelogical interest

This is a nice, modern campground in a state park that features stone ruins. I visited the Homolovi 1 and 2 sites. They were mostly rubble, but there were some intact walls and a large storage pit.

The campground is large, and sites are nicely distanced from one another. However, there is very little shade or privacy. When I visited in June, there were also high winds. These died down after dark, but made setting up the tent a fun challenge. Each tent site had a paved driveway. This was nice, but made tent stakes placement a little awkward. I had to tie one line to the picnic table.

Bathrooms were clean and modern, with hot and cold water.

Great campground in a desolate place

We loved Homolovi! Full hookups, clean bathrooms, gorgeous sunset and very helpful and kind rangers! For coming in mid July the evenings and morning were beautiful. Take the time to visit both sets of ruins in the morning to avoid heat (we loved Homolovi 1) and learn about the Hopi people.  Winslow (closest town) is a short drive away and well worth it. Great food, Standing on the Corner site and even a great local brewery. 

Great Campground!

I was coming into arizona later in the evening (8:30pm) with no plans of where to stay. Tried to call the campground reservation # and register online but I was too late. I just needed a safe place to crash for the night, so i decided to check it out anyway (w the Winslow visitor Center as my backup plan). There were a few camping spots open so I snagged one and stayed for the night. The ranger gave me a ticket in the morning indicting I needed to go to the visitors center and pay, which I promptly did. There’s a possible fine (up to $750) if not paid. I paid $18 but there’s showers and bathrooms. Really nice facilities that Id happily pay for. So quiet and the stars were unbelievable! I was really wowed. 



No Reservation—Came anyway

Sites are large and level with some pull-throughs available. Beautiful sunsets! Toilet and showers are clean but in mood repairs

Great location close to I-40

First time RV-ers. Reserving spot on the same day was just a simple phone call. Space numbers easy to read even at night We had a back- in, but it was no problem. Hot showers. Beautiful scenery.

Interesting location. Close to I-40 near Winslow, AZ. Water secured in the winter due to freezes.

Nice Dark Skies Campground

Location between Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest NP. Ruins near the campsite. Water unavailable at campsite during winter. Great location. Wonderful staff. Level sites for all size rigs.

Great location

Very nice state campground off of I-40 near downtown Winslow and the Petrified Forest NP.  Nice space between sites, most have electric and water.  There is a dump station.  Nice museum/visitor center with archaeological sites to visit and explore within the park.  Great sunsets.  The restrooms and showers are clean.  Beautiful park and very well maintained.

Gem Off I-40

We spent 3 nights in site 5, a pull through. Water was still off due to freezing for another week, but water available in the campground at the dump station.  It was windy during our stay, but we enjoyed riding our e-bikes throughout the park. We saw 4 groups of wild burro and horses. The nights were dark and quiet. Sites are large and the roads are easily accessible. There are bathrooms and showers. Wood fires are allowed. 

Quiet and spacious spots

We will be back to this campground when we we can stay more than one night. There’s a lot to do in the park and the campground itself is very nice. One small, but nice detail are the tiedowns around the tent sites.

Campground was nice and neat and easy access off hwy. Well maintained older shower facility but works.

Ginger Empty Nesters

Park seems to have a days worth of things to explore and hike. Will check that out tomorrow. Views are beautiful. Sites are level and well spaced, but there is little privacy due to the terrain. Giving 3 stars for facilities. Only 1 bath/shower house for 50+ sites. That bathhouse consists of just 2 unisex shower stalls plus the bathrooms which have 3 stalls and 2 sinks each (mens and women’s). Sorely inadequate for the number of campsites. On a side note, don’t pay attention to the indication of ADA vs regular sites. They are all basically the same with no differentiation. My some is in a wheelchair and he could manage in any site. One of the shower stalls does have a shower seat. 

Just ok

Electric and water hookup. Large sites.  Close for the I40. Definitely a good option to explore the area or for an overnight stay on the I40. 

State park

The campsite was convenient to the interstate, yet very quiet.  Sites are paved with 20 &amp; 30 amp service, water, and dump station.  Clean bathrooms and showers.  Take a walk or ride your bikes through the area to discover the ancient Hopi community remains.  Rangers are knowledgeable and helpful.  Close to Winslow
