Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park is located in McCalla, Alabama, about 30 miles southwest of Birmingham. The park itself is unique due to the fact that it features the historic Tannehill Ironworks, which, at the height of its use, supplied iron for the Confederate ordnance.

The park offers three different campgrounds that include a total of 195 campsites. All campsites have access to water and electricity, and if you have a trailer or RV you're planning on bringing with you, don't worry! The campgrounds can accommodate trailers both large and small. There's also a primitive campground that features 100 individual tent campsites. The cost of a campsite with full water and electricity hookups is $30 per night, while the primitive campsites are $20 per night. Please note, however, that the fee covers a family of up to four people. If you need to add any additional people, the fee is $3 per extra person. Sites are first come first serve and are often completely filled during Halloween, as trick-or-treating has now become a local tradition at the park. Visitors describe the experience as truly unique, and enjoy the creative (and scary) decorations placed by campers. 

Visitors of Tannehill Ironworks Park can enjoy various activities, such as hiking, biking, fishing, train rides, and exploring the local attractions. Among these attractions are the Tannehill Furnaces, a historical landmark, the Pioneer farm, the Alabama Iron and Steel Museum, and the Crafts Cabins. In the Crafts Cabins, local artisans produce pottery, artwork and quilts, to name a few things. This typically takes place on the weekends during the months of March through November. 

Overall, visitors describe their visit to the park as peaceful and relaxing. The three campgrounds have access to an old country store that supplies campers with essentials such as emergency supplies, firewood and food items. There's also a natural limestone spring located near the campsites. Train rides and playgrounds offer a lot for old and young visitors alike. It's easy to see why Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park is a favorite of both locals and travel enthusiasts, and why some can't “just” stay for the weekend.

Camped at Tannehill for our 12th anniversary.  It was Flea Market weekend, also.  The museum there is very interesting and educational.

This is really a fun campground to take your family to but it can get pretty crowded during popular times. The park is in a great part of Alabama and is located close to a lot of the best hiking in the state. Additionally, the park is set up on an old ironworks plant where many people lived and worked. You can explore the park and learn all about the history of the ironwork industry. They even have a museum which explains the process. While we were there they were having movie night for anyone staying in the park on a giant screen. They also have an ice cream shop since it gets so hot out. We didn't get a chance to explore as many of the trails as we would have liked but we will definitely be back. My one major suggestion would be to prepare for very hot weather in the summer months.

Lots to See and Do

We arrived in to this campground very late. We were driving cross country and were directed to this campground by a local when we were searching for a nonexistent KOA. We arrived after hours and it wasn't clear how we do an after hours checkin. We drove around, selected a site and within minutes a ranger pulled up. He politely took our information and gave us a camp pass along with the bathroom code. We weren't parked too far from the cabins that used to be at the KOA that has since closed down. The site was plenty large enough to accommodate our two small tents. The site came complete with a fire ring and picnic table and a lovely stream at the back. It did rain on us, really hard but the sounds of the stream and rain fall, it was a lovely place to be. It had some really majestic looking walkways and the trees were spectacular. The bathhouse was clean and more then sufficient. Would be a great place to stop for a longer period of time.

I had another wonderful stay at Tannehill State Park but this time with family. This place is close enough to the interstate that it is very convenient yet so very secluded and peacful. The cabins are basic but efficent and hold historical values. Several activities such as the Museum, Frontier Farm and Minature ridable train will keep you engaged but the best is the trail system. The Mountain Bike trails are a blast and well maintained. Definately worth the trip for that alone as my previous trips have been for. I highly recomend this place regardless of your style of camping.

Beautiful historic buildings and a very cold spring fed creek. Great for kids bikes and swimming in the creek. Bathhouses need attention but overall very nice camping place.

This place is awesome! Lots to do and yummy ice cream. 

We're craft vendors at Tannehill Trade Days March- November and we've started camping out there every month. My grandkids absolutely love it. The ride their bikes, play in the creek, and eat great ice cream from the creamery!

Love! Love! Love!

Sites are kinda tight but everyone was very friendly and nice to talk to. The vendors in the art cabins was very nice and had amazing work. Any thing you need is at the store also drinks food and simple rv necessities and firewood. And a lot of history and hiking.

Easily one of my favorite campgrounds to visit. Plenty of trails to walk or ride and just a great place to get away from town.

Great little campground for a two day too though looked like people for staying there for much longer.
